Retire Cheap In Thailand! My Cost Of Living. Thailand Travel. Expat Living Overseas

good morning we are on prach hill and I
come up here every morning for my
workout Here In Paya it’s part of my
morning
exercise they have a Crews that are here
in the
morning and they’re doing gardening work
so if one of them come by with a leaf
blower I’ll I’ll turn off the camera and
we’ll go find a little quieter spot but
it’s not bad right now I really enjoy
coming up here in the mornings to finish
off my daily
exercise and I wanted to talk to you a
little bit about what it’s costing me to
stay in pya a big part of this year is
going to be looking at Cost of Living
overseas we’re going to be talking about
specifics but also throughout the year
we’re going to be talking about
generalities about what changes I’ve
seen
what you know what issues will come up
when you decide to live overseas and
choose a place that’s even as beautiful
as Paya you’re still going to have
things to think
about there’s no better place to have
this discussion than up here propm Hill
it’s a nice place to go for a morning
walk I’m going to talk to you about what
it’s costing me to live here as far as
my room cost I’m going to give you some
examples of high-end and a very casual
sort of room that I’m renting now and
what I feel about them we’re also going
to talk about food and and we’re going
to talk about what it cost me as far as
what I wear and transportation costs
things like that here in Patia I live a
very affordable life cheaper than when I
was in Bangkok and that’s part of what
we’re going to talk about Bangkok is
wonderful but it costs a lot more so
let’s talk about living In Paya what
it’s costing me so you have a better
idea okay all right let’s
go
[Music]
every morning this walk is a great
exercise there pull-up bars here and a
beautiful view let’s talk about housing
let’s talk about what it’s costing me to
stay here in pya I’m staying at one of
the hotels that I really enjoy I’ve
stayed at lots of different hotels here
in patea over the years I’ve been coming
here now oh my gosh almost two decades
but the place that I choose to stay in
right now it’s not some luxury hotel but
it is a good price for all utilities
Wi-Fi a nice swimming pool so I’m going
to show that to you and I’ll give you a
chance to see where I was staying in
Bangkok again in case you missed that
video so you can compare two places
different price ranges and give you an
idea what the cost is per month now
don’t forget this is going to be more
expensive expensive than if you stay on
a Visa that’s longterm you can negotiate
even better prices you can negotiate
down to $16 a day or whatever the case
might be especially if you’re here for 6
months or a yearlong Visa but I stay on
30day visas I come into Thailand and I
head out to another country hopefully
someday it’ll be awesome if they extend
that out to making it when you arrive
you can stay 6 months that would be
fantastic it’d be great for their
economy as well but until that time it
is what it is let’s take a look at where
I’m staying and what it’s costing me
here In Paya suu’s court has been my
go-to for quite some time many years now
it is located on SOA and it’s a
centrally located hotel that I find
Convenient I have a 7-Eleven right
across the street pretty much anything
you need restaurants food carts all
around it there’s two different swimming
pools I’ll show it to you this is the
first one that is on the side of the
structure that I staying and then right
across the structure you have this much
larger pool it’s actually just a great
location and I’m paying about
$23 a day for this room that’s very
affordable when you think about it
that’s incredible that’s much cheaper
than trying to live in the United States
which would cost me about
$2600 a month forget that no this is the
room that I stayed in in Bangkok it was
at the Nana City hotel and it cost me
about
$36 a night still cheaper than the
United States what about the cost of
food I have basically two different
sources that I use for food when I’m
here in Thailand one is I will stock up
my refrigerator with a bunch of stuff
and I’m going to show that to you now of
what stuff I like to buy for my
refrigerator and that saves me a lot of
money okay let’s talk about what I buy
for the room this is a good example
right here strawberries these are 100
bot so that’s $3 for this thing of
strawberries 25 bot or actually less
than a dollar for four bananas these
granolas are about 20 bot each okay and
that’s why I buy the milk so I can eat
the granolas uh these yogurts are 15 bot
each these little coffees are 20 bot
each this uh 1 lit is about 40 bot so
just a little over a dollar it’s really
actually a pretty good price uh these uh
shakes right here that I buy these
sugar-free protein shakes uh these go
are 49 bought each so probably about
$150 uh these are some of the fresh
items that I buy from the 71 and I pick
them up as snacks all the time this is
like a little snack roll it’s very good
and they’re made every
day these are 50 bot and these are 60 I
believe 60 bot so about maybe $150 and
$2 this is a Caesar salad with
everything it has everything in there so
that gives you an idea what I buy and I
stocked the room with these items so
that I have food to eat in the room and
it saves me a lot of
money the second source of food that I
have is I eat the small carts that are
out here the little family-owned shops
that are making me fresh food I’m going
to go to one and show it to you give you
an idea what the price range is now
there are restaurants here of all kind
in patea you’ve got high-end restaurants
you’ve got you know little family-owned
restaurants that’ll charge you 150 bot
for a meal which is not a bad price but
I do have a tendency to go to these
little carts I find the ones that I like
and I’ll go to them and let’s go ahead
and show you at least one maybe two of
of those so you got an idea of what it’s
costing me to eat here in
pya I tried to find a happy medium
between a cart and a restaurant this is
a great little restaurant I love to go
to Dragon House has prices that are
about the same as food carts and it’s
just a fun little place it was built in
the 60s and it’s just a really cool
little restaurant centrally located Here
In Paya and I ordered the pad thai
noodles with two eggs on top for
breakfast cupon
Cup oh
[Music]
my
[Music]
oh oh that looks so
good C going cop oh my
[Music]
[Music]
word
[Music]
wait a minute now I see a sign here that
says they’ve got what a weekly rate of
4,000 bot monthly rate of 12,000 000 bot
okay let’s go ahead and check out one of
these rooms
12,000 bot a month that’s pretty good 35
to1 right now is the exchange rate and
this room looks pretty nice yeah I know
the electronics are a little bit dated
but you never know they might be getting
that fixed up the kitchenet is nice and
I like the fact that it does have an
outdoor area that you can step outside
and I think the room doesn’t look that
bad at all for the price and it did have
a nice uh bathroom here Y and a nice
view right outside as well so this is
the Dragon House it’s an
[Music]
option health care costs is something
that will
definitely hurt your retirement if
you’re not ready you need to be prepared
for health care costs there’s basically
three things that I worry about when it
comes to health care I worry about
having some kind of Health Care coverage
in case I get put into a hospital okay
and I worry about Emergency Care such as
ambulances and things along those lines
the third one is Dental okay let’s talk
a little bit about these three Here In
Paya you have lowcost dental and I’m
actually going to get some dental work
while I’m here so I’ll be doing a video
on that but I’m telling you I can get
cleanings done for $30 Amer I can get uh
I had a chip tooth fix for $45 Amer and
on this trip we’re going to find out
what the crown costs are so all of that
is getting looked
into okay I just got back from the
dentist and I wanted you to know what
happened and what the prices were so
let’s talk about that real quick and
I’ll insert this into the video right at
the point where we’re talking about
dental care so I had some pain in the
jaw down here and I went to go see what
exactly was happening at the Smile
Dental Center and I’ll put on here not
only what the place looks like but I’ll
also leave you where it is located here
so you can freeze it and you can find it
yourself I’ve been going here for years
by the way they’ve done great cleanings
for me all kinds of things like that so
they did an x-ray and they did not find
any fractures so there’s a few different
things that that pain could be they’re
not sure yet so they’re going to wait
and see where exactly it starts to show
up again so I can they can more identify
what’s happening with this pain because
they’re not seeing any fracture in the
tooth they don’t want to do a crown if
there’s no break and they don’t want to
do a root canal if they’re not seeing a
fracture down by where the root is you
see what I’m saying they don’t want to
do that kind of major work if they’re
not seeing any evidence of a fra
what were the prices a crown would have
cost me
$250 American that’s super cheap that’s
about oneth of the cost in the United
States if they needed to do a root canal
that would have been $400 American again
very cheap so that’s the prices that it
was going to cost me if I needed those
procedures done the X-ray was
$6 and what else okay they ended up do a
cleaning on me my teeth is all shiny
that cost me $30 and so that gives you
an idea of prices for and kind of like a
dental update okay let’s get back to the
video another thing to think
about is emergency services such as
ambulance one of the things that I tell
people is make sure that you have some
cash on you and make sure that you’ve
got a credit card on you because if you
get injured and they come and pick you
up and you don’t have these things they
may just leave you okay this is not a
system where they have some sort of care
for those of you that are traveling from
other countries you’ve got to have
something to pay for your health care so
make sure that you have that in place um
I always joke that a Visa card is really
the best uh Health Care coverage that
you can have here in Thailand having a
Visa card and you’re covered okay when
it comes to hospital care this is where
having a health care coverage really
comes in
handy if you have uh healthc care
coverage I’ll give you an idea what mine
costs it costs $100 a month I don’t
really want to talk about the name of
the company because there’s a lot of
great companies I’m going to put right
here for you some different companies
that you can look into but I don’t want
to talk about any specifics or anything
like that because nobody’s paying me and
I don’t want anyone to think that I’m
like promoting a particular particular
company I’ll just give you some examples
$100 a month Healthcare I will tell you
gives me pretty darn good health care
while I’m traveling through southeast
Asia if I need to go into a hospital if
I need to get all sorts of care done um
including tests around having pains and
what might be causing those pains
long-term stays in the hospital you
really need to have it and $100 a month
is cheap you know back in the States it
cost me between 600
$1,000 a month to have healthc care
coverage as an
individual Transportation costs does it
cost me anything for transportation sure
it does I’ll give you some examples when
I take the bus system between cities
that’s going to cost me about 130 bot if
I’m only going a short distance I’ll get
the little bot buses that are here they
cost you $10 p bot they’ll get you at
least one direction going through Paya
when you turn and start heading another
Direction they expect you to pay another
10 bot you have scooter cabs that are
here those scooter cabs they’ll get you
across Paya fast I think it’s a lot of
fun and it’s usually about a 100 bot
pretty much wherever you want to go In
[Music]
Paya I appreciate the time that you
spent with me today we got a chance to
talk about Paya what it’s costing me to
live here and what the costs of my
housing food everything we’re going to
continue on to other cities as well and
we’re going to talk a lot about some
other countries here in Southeast Asia
and what they are costing me to live as
well that’s what this whole year is
about is cost of living fulltime in
Southeast Asia and comparing that to
what it would cost if I had stayed home
in my home state
which is rather
expensive I appreciate your time and we
got a lot more to see and a lot more to
talk about like And subscribe the video
come along with me let me know what you
think of this new series this year
talking about living
overseas all right oo look at the view
we’re way up here I’ll let you go we’ll
talk again soon
aloha right here ankles right there
perfect oh man those look so
good all
right grab one of these right
here oh man so
[Music]
good yum those look good 10 bot okay
there
thank you thank you so much I appreciate
can I give one piece to these beautiful
dogs
Hawaii I’m from Hawaii Hawaii can I give
a piece to this dog or
no will he eat a piece let me
see you want a piece there buddy okay
all right let me give one to your friend
here your backup dog here hold on you
want a piece buddy huh you want a
piece yeah is that good yeah
you like that that’s a tasty one right
there
yeah you want another
one there you go you got
it and one more for you there you go
buddy okay good huh so tasty right tasty
you know I always joke about
how uh Thailand is like the best place
for people that are
vegetarians because vegetables and
fruits are so cheap here and they’re
expensive back in the state
but here in Thailand you can eat
vegetables and fruits pretty cheap and
rice and maybe even fish if that’s on
your personal menu you know but protein
is also super cheap here I can get
chicken I can get pork uh 10 bot okay
for one of these little things you know
30 bot is a dollar so it gives you an
idea of how cheap you can get protein as
well I always talk about vegetarians you
know on these videos but if you like
meat Talon’s the place for you as
well okay I need to insert this into the
video I just got back from the dentist
and I wanted you
know I wanted you know wanted you
know what the okay get
ready try it
again

  1. Find the music and the videos therapeutic, in addition to being informative. Like your style, with the focus on minimalism, with no political or controversial content

  2. Forgive me I stumbled on your channel if my maths is correct your paying 25k to stay at Sutus court ? is this a sort term accommodation or have you been there for a while ? If long term why are you not going the condo route

  3. Just discovered, and subscribed. You could've been a professional reporter in the states from what I can tell? Appreciate the breakdown…….The last part with the wtf doesn't bother me, but may have people judging? Looking forward to more. Thsnks!

  4. There's a bad trend amongst YT vloggers that are either so crass or have a distinct lack of vocabulary. Stop calling these economies 'cheap'. You're basically facilitating an imminent price increase. Explain that they're less costly or good value, but please stop calling them cheap. Also you stated that Dragon house was built in the 60's? I think that is highly unlikely, as Pattaya was a sleepy fishing village back then. Soi Buakhao didn't go past The Marquee bar until 1991 ish. I know this from talking to people who've been visiting Pattaya since 1976. I've a friend who went there in 1985 and said none of the Soi's along Beach Rd existed as they do now. They were merely cut ways and Walking Street was just about the only area of entertainment. These people are talking from first hand experience.

  5. Great video. I walked the same path when I stayed at the Lewitt hotel (paid too much at this place) I recommend the D Hotel on Soi Buchao excellent information on the cost-of-living in Pattaya! Healthcare is something I didn’t think about. Thank you!

  6. Can anyone suggest a good health insurance that covers SE Asia and also US? Plan to be in SE Asia long term, but needs to comeback to the US about one month per year.

  7. Have you tried cost of living in places like Seoul Koreas or it's countryside cities? I understand that some expats can even pull off a sub $1000K / month life in smaller Japanese cities too. Then there is Mongolia and even parts Taiwan. You can have more content this way.

  8. Thanks for the info. I'dlike to tell you, kindly, that your diet contains way too much sugar. Coke, yogurt & noodles spike your glucose levels greatly. Good luck out there.

  9. I didnt watch you videos while traveling to Bangkok; Now I am back to California, i really love to watch your shows. Two thumbs up for your videos especially those about Thailand.

  10. Speaking of living in different countries, I see a lot of russia in the news. I heard once that Moscow is better ran cleaner safer city than USA cities lol.

  11. I had a crown done with rood canal and it was several thousand!!!! Stupid question, how often do you get check up and cleaning? Its hard for me, they don't do them on the military base I'm on. A lot of the time American dentist are months out.
