Exploration Historique : A l’assaut du château de Châlucet #1
Hey hello friends I hope you are well we meet
today at the castle of Châlucet which is
just here behind me we have the first tower
the rest is further on the castle motte so
we are discovering this castle with thanks
to terra aventura we take you with us the
castle of Châlucet was built around 1130
by two knights of the Jonac family suzerain
of the viscount of Limoges it is probably
originally a simple protected keep and a lordly
home of which there remains today no visible
vestige on either side of the Jeannette tower
the bas castrum was a real agglomeration delimited
by an enclosure around twenty knights had
a home which they occupied with their family
their staff their horses the Jonacs remained
co-lords of the castrum until it was taken
over around 1270 by Géraud de Maulmont from
a family of Limousin knights Géraud de Maulmont
became minister of the viscounty of Limoges
in 1262 then established himself as advisor
to the kings of France Philippe le Bold and
Philippe Le belle around 1273 in the years
1270 and 1280 in place of the first high castle
he built a new building the new castle luxurious
residence equipped with high-performance defensive
equipment Châlucet expresses all its all
the power of its Lord it is one of the most
remarkable castles of the kingdom without
comparison in Limousin at the end of the 13th
century.
from the 14th to the 11th century the fortress
passed into the hands of mercenaries, brigands
and other unscrupulous highwaymen who ransomed
travelers and peasants in the area.
the most famous of them was Pierre le Bernet,
tired after many decades, the consuls of Limoges
chased out a last threatening troop in 1594
and ordered the dismantling of the already
dilapidated fortifications.
the lower castrum or castral village brought
together around twenty families of knights
with their staff.
200 to 300 people lived here.
the village was protected by a wall.
inside we found the tower houses of the knights
12 or 13 m high.
they consisted of a utilitarian ground floor
where archaeologists found fragments of domestic
objects, pots, animal bones, iron objects
and so on.
the living space located upstairs was lit
by rare windows or even daylight slits.
We also discovered one-piece granite sinks
or an entire water drainage system.
finally under certain houses we find deep
and vaulted storage cellars outside the enclosure
of the suburbs grouped together smaller residences
or even houses made of wood and cob shelter
people of lesser conditions the slopes sliding
towards Briance and Ligoure welcomed gardens
orchards and perhaps vineyards.
we are here in front of the rest of a house
knight’s tower this wall of the house thus
constituted part of the village wall we can
easily imagine the height of the house 12
to 13 m it was made up of a ground floor and
at least two floors we see large openings
and not day windows these are windows to cushion
at the base of it a stone bench made it possible
to benefit from the daylight we can consider
this building as the keep the main tower of
the bas castrum it is a massive square tower
of 8.10 m high side of almost 20 m with a
thick wall at the base of almost 2 m and equipped
with a buttress on each side, the entrance
is on the first floor at more than 4 m in
height through a door that can be reached
thanks to to an exterior wooden balcony the
three floors were served by steep wooden staircases
they were only lit by daylight slits which
are in no way arches and had no chimney not
even latrines suffice to say that this dungeon
was hardly habitable and was essentially used
for the assertion of seigniorial power the
floors on floors topped a false base the latter
even the rock is completely blind was only
a storage place which could on occasion be
used of dungeon the excavation of this space
showed that there was neither underground
nor silo in this lower part we do not know
the origin of the name Jeannette attested
only since the 19th century and that only
a few legends attempt to explain.
located in the upper zone of the spur the
high castrum is a second fortified complex
delimited by the large southern ditch which
isolates the entire site from the rest of
the plateau its general plan is very irregular
but it is generally wider than the low castrum
We must originally imagine an organization
quite similar to that seen in the lower castrum
with houses in alleys, gardens established
on terraces along the slopes of the vineyards,
but at the end of the 13th century this second
castral enclosure was significantly reorganized
by the establishment in its heart of a new
castle we do not know the origin of this second
castle complex whose heart is made up of a
keep in Épron the texts tell us that here
also lived families of knights with their
relatives their servants craftsmen and so
on this door is located on the roadway which
runs along the rocky ridge from the old disappeared
bridge of the Ligoure located near the confluence
with the Briance it constitutes the main entrance
to the upper castrum and symbolizes the border
between the upper and lower castrum 2.50 thick
it takes the form of a broken barrel vaulted
passage it had neither machicolation nor portcullis
but simply a double leaf, that is to say of
two wooden doors closed by a large beam the
name of captain’s door is only attested since
the 19th century the chapel dominated the
old captain’s door ensuring spiritual protection
according to a process quite common in the
Middle Ages it results in fact the modification
of an older construction probably a knight’s
tower of simply rectangular plans it is oriented
to the east access was in the center of the
south wall by a staircase opening onto the
floor of the nave earthen floor beaten perhaps
covered with a wooden floor the heart was
materialized by several stone tiers and included
in its center a quadrangular masonry forming
the base of the hotel a wall niche in the
south wall and a monolithic baptismal tank
in granite have also discovered open during
excavations this facade was consolidated by
the Departmental Council in 2006 the main
entrance to the fortress was protected by
a barbican advanced in Épron topped by a
crenellated walkway one must imagine that
this facade was flanked by round towers at
each corner destroyed in 1594 during the dismantling
of the castle in the center, access to the
castle was via a door pierced in a high granite
porch tower on either side of the door for
defensive reasons, daylight slots lit the
ground floor of the large main building unlike
the first floor with large pointed arch windows
at the top of the facade the battlements which
measure more than 1.80 in height are only
captured without a walkway behind they only
served to assert the fortified character of
the Palace from this northwest corner we can
appreciate the western facade of the new castle
as well as the steepest slope leading to the
Ligoure the northwest side of the castle includes
a circular corner tower then the wall of a
main building the tower visible on the left,
knocked down in 1594 and recently consolidated,
included a blind room on the ground floor
which was accessed through a manhole at the
top of the tower; the upper levels were residential
spaces with a square plan; a staircase screw
served all the floors latrines existed on
each level this tower was at the end of the
13th century as high as the facade inside
the castle the buildings surrounding the keep
almost completely disappeared during the collapse
of that -here in 1918 we are now in this space
that we call the lists this is the space which
is located between the castle and the surrounding
wall this is where the games took place at
the time as well that military training must
obviously be imagined as flat ground, today
sloping due to landslides; we can see part
of the surrounding wall which has also been
consolidated and which is today 8 m high we
can imagine that it was two more at the time
this wall was probably equipped on your right
with a buttressed tower coming from the original
castrum and integrated into the western wall
during the regularization of the enclosure
at the end of the 13th century and there we
have an archer who will explain to us his
experience as an archer and well you take
the bow you draw it and you shoot on sight
like that woman child we avoid eh it’s not
very recommended the English on the other
hand we can go there.
when Géraud de Maulmont had his new castle
built at the end of the 13th century he took
care to shelter the various buildings behind
a high and massive curtain wall 25 m high
50 m long 3 m thick it really served as shields
facing the southern plateau on which a potential
enemy could place throwing machines it was
formerly flanked by three towers one at each
corner and a third in the form of a fine beaked
tower at the level of the metal cage the cruciform
archers with stirrups that the we see at 2/3
of its height were served by a wall corridor
a sheath with archers this allowed the defenders
to be protected and to move quickly at the
top we still notice some archer stirrups which
were in the battlements of the wall walk excavations
revealed the existence of a second ditch at
the very foot of this facade the Château
Neuf de Géraud de Maulmont built in just
10 years from 1270 to 1280 was a real fortified
palace equipped with all the comforts of its
time before you imposes itself the mass and
launched from the keep of the upper castrum
its older base was reused in the plan of the
end of the 13th century and raised the door
opening onto the void approximately halfway
up in fact served a side balcony of which
we can still see the beam holes this main
tower today more than 30 m high still had
before 1918 a gay place culminating almost
40 m from the ground of the courtyard we access
the vast courtyard where you you find yourself
from the main doorway through a vaulted passage
which allowed you to pass under the chapel
inserted between the keep and the large dwelling
on the right.
well friends it’s already the end of this
video we had a good laugh making it it was
very funny in any case I leave you with the
view here of the magnificent castle behind
this protective grid so that we don’t fall
into the ravine in any case I hope you liked
this video and that you enjoyed this castle
of Châlucet for me it’s a castle that I find
frankly fascinating it’s super beautiful frankly
it’s incredible but here’s me I’ll see you
next time for a new video bye.
to conclude with a last sentence I would like
to thank Terra Aventura for having created
this course at the Château de Châlucet which
is frankly a great discovery in Haute Vienne,

I want bread please bread bread bread please
bread bread
I’m being attacked I don’t have any bread
sir I don’t have any steps leave me alone
leave me alone
could we get out of there please because we’re
in prison it’s a bit complicated there because
he’s my comrades going crazy my comrades I
took the gate in the forehead please free
us we are innocent we are innocent we just
wanted to visit us at the base we don’t know
we weren’t aware that we shouldn’t come there
he hadn’t said the king that he wasn’t allowed
to enter his land without authorization, the
gate behind there, that one over there, well
it closed as soon as we got back, it’s a bit
boring so we’re stuck there for at night and
above there is a grate well we can’t go out
over it either but I’m afraid of the dark
I’m afraid of the dark I don’t want to stay
there’s no torch I have the nose crushed on
the grille it hurts the nose on the other
hand it’s going to get long because there’s
no one else he with Piafs and the Piafs I’m
afraid of the dark I’m afraid I’m afraid it’s
going to get really long very long I’m afraid.
