Exploring Jordan’s Crazy Ancient City: Petra
there is a strong sting F in
here this is what we’re aiming
for
um this is like way bigger than I
thought it would
be so Amy what’s happening today we’re
going a pitra we’re going to grab some
breakfast uh we’re going to grab some
lunch and we’re going to go it’s like 5
minute walk from here and go for an
explore so we just went to a place to
get our like pack lunch to bring into
PCT with us um and they didn’t have any
but they had some hummus which was a lot
cheaper so I think it’s hummus and bread
that come together and it was one jod
which is a good price so that’s what
we’re going to do for lunch
[Music]
today I think the line’s going to take a
really long time we heard it could be an
hour or two and it looks like it’s
probably going to be that way
s there’s none there so our rough plan
is to like H along the main trail all
the way up
here to the end and then depending on
how much energy we have either come back
this way and go back or go through these
tombs maybe we’ll talk to some people
and see what they recommend as a good
detour back um but I think these two
routes up here are slightly harder and
they’ll probably take a bit longer so
we’ll see how much daylight we have left
because we slept in a little
[Music]
bit we’re
[Music]
in
[Music]
this is really cool it’s like kind of
the path is gone into sort of like a
Gorge except without water so we’re just
walking through these like massively
tall Cliffs on either side and they like
have really cool rock textures and I
don’t know it’s pretty
surreal
we know that this thing’s significant
cuz there’s a tour guide talking to
people about it he’s been there for ages
it’s just that he doesn’t speak English
so he don’t know what it is we can’t e
[Music]
drop
okay it looks like we’re here this is
like the main event here the monastery
I’m pretty sure I actually genuinely
could be getting that wrong anyway
there’s like one thing here that
everyone’s like super hyped on it’s like
the famous thing that everyone takes
photos of and actually we haven’t been
walking that long we’re already here
half an hour yeah half an hour if
that
[Music]
okay I think this will do for lunch got
quite a good view in front of us that’s
awesome cute so we have some little flat
Breads and a decent Siz
[Music]
thing that’s so creamy all Hummers in
Jordan is exceptional we’ve had some
pretty Scenic picnics in our lives but
this one is insane this is exceptional
this is like next level yeah for
[Music]
sure by the way this isn’t the mon it’s
the treasury I just fected myself and I
was inured and you can’t actually go in
um but I don’t think it goes more than
like a meter or two it’s just kind of a
facade which looks really cool um
there’s not much inside it I think maybe
there were like once tombs and stuff
inside these things but yeah now they’re
empty I’m going to continue on our walk
and see what else there is it’s already
really
[Music]
cool
what do you think this
was I Reon like someone’s home so Petra
is a like 2,000 year old capital of a
big Empire that traded with like Romans
and stuff is like The Limited
understanding of this place that I have
um and it was like a lost city for quite
a long time until it was like discovered
again I guess um by some guy in like
1812 I think it was and it would have
been like kind of like an Indiana Jones
Expedition it would have been really
cool just like coming in here trying to
find everything it’s really awesome like
something out of a movie yeah for sure
that’s cool
Hello they’re so friendly so
friendly hello are they part of some
tourist scam or
something there’s like a little Trail up
here to go go walk up some steps and see
the monastery from La a Viewpoint
theas I keep forgetting anyway um we’re
not going to go cuz I can’t be bothered
what no we’re going no what yeah no I
just want to see new stuff I don’t need
to see the same thing from a different
angle it’s like an Instagram spot what
an impressive bridge for 2,000 years
[Music]
ago this is what we’re aiming for
[Music]
I almost prefer not having like a tour
guide you get to kind of just imagine
what things were it’s kind of fun cuz
there’s practically no signage here at
all so if you do want to know do some
research
[Music]
first there is a strong dang p in
here oh that’s bad
man all right we’re
leaving I just get
sh
what
okay I mean there’s
like CH what do you call it charcoal
stuff on the roof like Ash’s been
cooking or
something like sh
here maybe this was the kitchen a little
cup holder here might feel like movie
theater s
something unlikely I thought it would be
a lot more of like a set route where you
just kind of follow One path um but you
can kind of just go off path a little
bit and just like wander up things which
I really like you can just kind of
explore without the crowds it’s
[Music]
cool
this is like way bigger than I thought
it would be it’s like could have H
probably hundreds of people um will
research and let you know how many
people it did P but yeah it’s
huge and also they reckon only 15% of it
actually been un covered and the
remaining 85% is still like underground
let check this
[Applause]
out this handprint is
new definitely could be
new you’ve probably seen a lot of clips
of cool looking rocks already but they
are so cool so I’m going to point out
some
more yeah Point them out go I look she
just pointed oh there oh my
[Music]
God so this is where the goats hang out
[Music]
he looks just like the one in
Shri
donkey got some military looking tanks
up
here I can’t tell if they’re like from a
movie set or if they’re real we’ll find
out soon enough I mean I can see
Security in like military dudes
so there’s our
answer look at this
guy like Michael Jackson in his way down
the
hill so we started here we went all the
way along here and then we took some
like detour thing up to this tomb and
now we’re here and we’re going to keep
going along this way and then the
monaster is up there if we make it that
way um but there looks like there’s
heaps of stuff there so we’re in a
temple complex at the moment which is
currently like mid excavation and
apparently the whole building is like
the biggest building here and the whole
building is like
112,000 M squared which is pretty big
and yeah we’re just going to have wander
around there’s heaps of pillars
everywhere it looks quite
[Music]
cool
we’ve just read another sign that says
there’s a massive earthquake in 363 ad
which like destroyed most of the area
but it was still like a couple hundred
years later um when it was majorly
[Music]
abandoned so how does this match up your
expectations Zs
I think it exceeds them by a lot I
thought it was like I thought it was
going to be a really long walk in and
then just like see the treasury and I
didn’t realize there was going to be
like that much other stuff um and I
didn’t realize like the natural
formations would be this impressive as
well like I almost find like the natural
features to be more impressive than like
the treasury itself um yeah it’s really
cool when we were coming this way they
were like take a mu take a mule so many
people away yeah it takes an hour to
walk up only 20 minutes by a donkey so
I’m puffed already but we’re going to
see if we can do it quicker than an hour
I reckon it’ll be like half an
[Music]
hour the funny thing is taking a donkey
is walking Pace cuz the people who own
the donkey walk with the donkey so it’s
probably not much faster
[Music]
yeah how’s the
calves I’m not feeling fit
today
oh so many
stairs
how you
go okay it’s just
here yeah maybe 45 minutes
yeah we too
cocky there it
is made it there it
[Applause]
[Music]
is
[Applause]
what are your recog
names it’s
cool it’s very Grand
very yeah I think this one’s more
impressive it’s impressive the one you
can’t go inside but you can kind of see
a little bit this one also has like a
fraction of the people I guess least
people make it up here cuz it’s a bit
further but like you just have the the
whole thing just out it’s really
[Music]
cool good seat up here I don’t know if
you’ll be able to see but someone’s
sitting up
there
um
we’ve made it as far as we want to go
today I’m quite naed we’ve already
walked like 8 and 1 half kilm and have
to walk all the way back so we’ll wrap
it up here um I hope you enjoyed this
video we had a really fun time we
appreciate if you like And subscribe if
you want to watch more future

As one of the 7 wonders of the world, Petra is full of ridiculously unique history and was an absolute dream to explore. We spend a day walking around the site, and show you what it’s currently like in 2024 (hint: very empty for a wonder of the world!).
