Minimalistic Packing for Asia: here’s the mistakes I made
wow what a trip this has
[Music]

been truly incredible and I’ve seen so
many stuff but I was living out of this
one for 4 months I did a little packing
video beforehand where I showed
everything that I packed and now I’m
going to update that video to show what
has changed what do I wish that I didn’t
bring what do I wish that I would have
brought from the beginning and how I
managed to travel around Asia for 4
months doing five countries and only
living out of this one so to start off
the weight of this bag was around 10
kilos when I left I would say I have
paid overweight once with this one now
it’s 12 kilos but that was because I
only book carryon luggage with Air Asia
and they caught me so yes only once I
had to pay extra for overweight but
otherwise this bag has been fine and
I’ve been fine with the weight looking
at the exterior of the bag it’s kept up
so well I only have one little scratch
because I pressed it in in the overhead
compartment in the airplane so that is
pretty much my fault but otherwise than
that it’s looking just like it did
before which I’m very surprised over so
let’s open this baby boy up and see
what’s inside it now
for the outside compartment here I’ve
had my jacket it’s a lightweighted brain
jacket and this one has been crucial
when I’ve been traveling it has been
pissing down in some locations it has
been really windy and it’s been cold so
this one has been a true Lifesaver when
it comes to protecting myself and then I
can always layer underneath like a
hoodie and shirts and stuff so
definitely bring a proper and a good
lightweighted rain jacket or wind jacket
combined would be the ideal so you have
it for your trip then we have this
little or sort of medium um waterproof
bag and this one has also been really
really useful firstly to protect all my
electronics and all my belongings when
I’ve been to the beach or on a boat trip
or somewhere where it’s been raining but
I also figured out I could use it as a
cooling bag so in Thailand when it was
really hot we used this one to put beers
and water and soft drinks and stuff and
just fill it up with ice so this one was
definitely something that I’m really
happy that I brought with now on to my
first aid kit this one I would say if
you go on a hiking trip and you go
somewhere where you are really remote
and the danger is quite high it’s
excellent to have with you in in my
occasion when I was traveling I was
always in like cities or beach towns or
locations where there was always a
pharmacy so I never ended up using this
one I had to throw out some tools that
wasn’t allowed in the carryon for the
flight so thinking back about it I would
probably have left this one home since
everything was so accessible just
brought some basic things with me but
not a whole first aid kit but it’s up to
you depending on the trip that you go
for but this one for
me didn’t make it on to the next
apartment which is this small apartment
I have my luggage scale this one has
been so helpful and it’s been helpful
for me for years I’ve been traveling now
for almost 10 years and this one always
comes into hand it’s so handy to know
before you head to the airport how much
your luggage is and sometimes I find the
weight scales doesn’t really make it
because when you put your luggage onto
it it sometimes dropped to one side and
a little bit of the weight is carried by
the floor and not the scale but here you
can really make sure that you get the
full weight of your bags on the scale so
if you don’t have one make sure to get
one for your next trip now the main
compartment let’s see what’s in here so
my Birkin stocks they are covered in
a hair cover to not make everything else
dirty in my bag but my birken stocks has
been my best friends honestly I don’t
think they have ever looked this bad
they’re probably going to have to go in
the bed but they have been the shoes
that I’ve been living in they have been
so comfortable they have worked to all
my outfits to all the occas I’ve been
able to kind of hike in them if I’m
going to Waterfall not hike properly but
go in a bit of tracking which I wouldn’t
have wanted to go with my flip flop
so I have actually had to glue the the
SS of the shoes back onto it and they
have definitely seen better days but I
love these ones and these are the ones
that I’ve been living out the most
during my trip tote bag or fabric bag
whatever you call it I went on a yoga uh
trip in the beginning I did my yoga
training and we got this lovely little
uh fabric bag which I’ve carried with me
and it’s so Happ cuz you fold it up it
take no space and it doesn’t weigh that
much and you can have it as a beach bag
you can leave your laundry to the
launderette you could go shopping with
it so this one for sure if you have one
at home or get one before you go to your
next trip so you have it handy with you
all the time I also use this one when I
go onto the plane to put all my snacks
and my book and my phone and wallet and
all of those things so I can have it
handy underneath the seat so I don’t
need to have any backpacks or big items
since some tall it’s already small and
crowded space so I want to have
something small that I could just tuck
under but still keep all the essentials
with me and close by caply cap this one
I haven’t used as much as I thought I
could probably have gone away with not
bringing it but then there’s been quite
sunny days especially when you or sun
baithing I kind of like to put it over
my face but looking back at it I
probably would have got a more
beachy like summer vacation kind of hat
when I was already in Asia rather than
bringing this one so this one no my
toilet bag I have had everything that I
needed in here I have had these small
ones with shampoo and conditioner and
I’ve always met people that have been
able to share like a new bottle of
shampoo and conditioner split the cost
and then just fill them up or I have got
a shampoo and conditioner and body wash
at the start of my trip and since I’ve
been for like around a month in each
place I’ve never had to struggle with it
cuz I always top these ones up just
before I go to my next destination and
no issues with security or anything so
I’ve had face wash body wash my raser I
found this nice
little um hair sculp oil which I’ve then
brought with me so yeah everything in
here definitely come with me next time
umbrella no no no no no no don’t bring
it there’s very rare occasions where you
overseas you decide to bring an umbrella
it’s not windy so you can actually use
the umbrella normally it’s stormy at the
same time as it’s raining so the
Umbrella Just goes poof the wrong way
you know what I mean so this one has
actually just added on to my weight and
I have not once used it if there has
been rain either I’ve just enjoyed the
rain get wet and carry on with my life
or I’ll put on my rain jacket but I’ve
never decided to actually take up my
umbrella so this one won’t come for my
next trip flippy flops yes yes yes yes
you need it like it’s essential when
you’re on holiday when you’re away when
you’re in a warm country you want your
flipflops so I don’t think I need to
convince you to bring them with they
have been very nice in many occasions so
they are a yes then we have song and if
you have seen my other video you can see
that this song is not the song that I
brought with me I bought this one in
Bley and it’s a fully black one and I
have loved it since I got it honestly
it’s been so so so nice cuz not only
does it work as a seron which I can lie
on to sunbit or to I don’t know what you
do with thisone but it’s worked so well
for coming up for example when I’ve been
into temples and when I’ve been too cold
I’ve been able to put it over my
shoulders or around my hips or anything
and it’s made me look fashionable
normally you have a song and it’s very
there’s loads of patterns and it doesn’t
really fit in with the rest of your
clothes but having a completed black one
I’ve actually been able to take my where
do we have it swimsuit put this one on
around my hips and make a beautiful
black dress which no one knows is this
wrong together with the swimsuit so this
one love it yes in here we have all my
bikinis my underwears my socks my you
name it here’s also some bikinis well I
would say for the amount of times I’ve
been wearing shoes i b way too many
socks I should probably have gone for
more underwears just because if you move
around a lot you might not have time to
do laundry all the time so I found
myself being like on my last pair of
underwear too many times rather than my
last pair of socks so what I would have
done is maybe taken 15 to 20 underwears
mine is quite small so it doesn’t add
out too much of the weight but up to you
but I would have brought more than I
thought I needed of underwears and less
than I thought I needed of socks so
maybe three socks and yeah 15 to 20
underwears just so I could keep myself
gr for longer without feeling desperate
need of a laundry then we have the big
clothing compartment so my clothes have
changed a lot since I started this
journey what I thought I wanted to have
with me on this trip was not what I
wanted to have with me on this trip so
if you look at it I would have wanted
more nice like just take on shorts what
I did live in though was this little
skirt that I bought in barley and it was
so convenient to just throw on it was
nice and lightweighted it kind of got
wrinkly but with the humidity it goes
out pretty quickly so if I would have on
back again and looking at what kind of
trip I did some people go on backpacking
trip to do hiking adventurers um only
living in very like basic hostels and
stuff that is not my type of travel
style I like to travel comfortably but
still be within a budget so I spent more
time in airbnbs and maybe nicer hostels
and I went out for proper meals not just
street food or not just like the hole in
the wall kind of things so for me this
was more the vibe that people had around
there and this is more my vibe when it
comes to how I would dress if I were
anywhere else in the world and not on a
backpacking Journey so these are the
kind of clothes that I would probably
prefer to bring with me next time same
when it comes to Tops like these small
cute tops that doesn’t way much and is
quite breedable so you don’t get too hot
is absolutely amazing I have so many of
them you could just Mitch Match here’s
even the set for the skirt you could
just like put them together make a nice
nice outfit and you have multiple
options and you look cute while still
staying sane because you don’t sweat too
much and it’s just yeah I like it when
it comes to pants I had to buy a couple
of pants because when I went from barley
to Philippines and then to Vietnam it
started to get really cold and I hadn’t
packed for cold weather so what I would
have done from the start is probably to
have a bit of an idea where I’m going
and what the the weather is going to be
so I can then pack for the occas so I
would have like thicker pants one or two
and then I would have a bit lighter
pants for the warmer countries where I
just want something that cover my legs
but isn’t like warm or too heavy and
then more like shorts and skirt for the
really hot countries so I had to buy
quite a bit of clothing which yeah
wasn’t planned but I guess you living
you alar and with that said it wasn’t
just because I packed wrongly for the
weather that I had to buy a lot of
clothes one major thing with buying new
clothes I don’t know if you can see this
but this should be white it is not white
laundry in Asia is something else like I
thought it would be quite easy and nice
and good to get your laundry done in any
shop that has not been the case all my
clothes that I put into laundry
especially the new ones that I bought in
the countries have all shrunken they
come back they have more stains than
when they got in they
smell horrendous and this is after the
wash I can understand if this was before
the wash but this is after the wash so
I’ve probably thrown away maybe I don’t
know 5 to 10 pieces of clothes pieces of
clothes because I haven’t been able to
use them again they have been that bad
so that’s something to watch out for and
that comes with my second tip around
this topic is to maybe bring less white
or bright colors so I have seen that I
packed a lot of white cloth clothes and
yeah yes they are more prone to get
stains and that has definitely been the
case if you’re comfortable with not
wearing that much white white is kind of
my color when I’m away I would suggest
you to not bring as many white clothes
cream would be better um any other color
black all those things but just the
white it won’t stay white one wash and
it would be either cream color or it
would have stains or it would have
shrunken or anything like that so why
clothes I love them but I would probably
say don’t bring it with for your trip be
mindful of what you pack and do only
pack or try only pack what you actually
know that you like to wear in these kind
of countries where you are going and
then we have this which is a backpack
cover and they have been so handy I
forgot one of mine in Asia but at least
I have one that I can show you and they
are so good to just pop on your bag and
it’s been so many situations where it’s
just started to hail down or piss down
with rain and you have your electronics
you have all your clothes you are going
from one destination to the next or
you’re on a scooter trying to move
around and you don’t want your stuff to
be either broken or completely wet when
you get there or anything like that so
these ones have been gold so if you are
on the fence of getting a backpack cover
or not get it you need it and they don’t
weigh that much they don’t cost that
much and they’re going to save you
headaches when you’re away on your trip
and my last one is a little take with
you laundry detergent and yes this has
been very helpful I would probably not
have brought as many as I did but
looking back I only have one left so I
guess I needed them but they have been
super convenient when I’ve had clothes
for example the white clothes that I
don’t want to shrink or get more stain
I’ve been able to take this in the sink
or in a bucket or somewhere where I’ve
been able to pull this in put some water
in and do my washing by hand and then
just hang it up to dry and since it’s
really hot over in Asia in the winter
season it dries in no time these ones
has been very handy and if you have the
opportunity or availability to bring
this one with you I would highly
recommend it so that is a walk through
of my backpack what I brought with me
what I wish I didn’t bring with me and
kind of my ideas coming back now from
this trip and having lived out of this
one for four four and a half months it’s
been a challenge but I’m so glad I did
it because it showed me how few things I
actually need to be able to live
comfortably when I’m away but also I
kind of feel like I’m going to implement
that when I’m here as well like the
minimalistic packing is the way to go
cuz it’s been so so convenient I’ve had
to carry less stuff I’ve had to when I
move from place to place it’s so much
more convenient to just have a backpack
you throw it on the back and then you
just go rather than having to carry
suitcase and drag them and the wheel
braks and all of that so I’m very
surprised over this experience and I’m
so happy I did it because it’s opened up
my eyes to a more minimalistic living in
general I think so that’s definitely my
tips my things to avoid and hopefully
you’re going to have a amazing trip for
you that’s coming up let me know down
below where you are heading and what you
thought of this video and also maybe if
you want to see some other packing
videos or some other videos related to
traveling that I can share with you cuz
my next adventure is coming in short
let’s see what that would be
Today, join me as we unpack my backpack after traveling Southeast Asia for the last 4 months. Learn from my mistakes, some of which cost me money and added unnecessary weight to my load.
Traveling with only one backpack can be quite a challenge, especially for a first-timer like me. However, I believe it went pretty well overall.
There are certain items I regret bringing and others I wish I had acquired before departure to save myself headaches and avoid having to purchase them while away.
So let’s unpack my backpack together after this 4-month backpacking journey and glean some insights for your own travels.

Very helpful video, thank you.
I enjoy the rain too and sometimes it's so much nicer to just let yourself soak in it rather than trying to avoid it at all costs ๐ Nice video!!
May I recommend dr. Beckmann magic leaves๐งบ they even keep a fantastic smell in your bag during travels๐ ๐๐
Iโm all black and army green ๐ค๐๐ช
