Berchtesgaden: Salt Mines and Dark History | Bavarian Nature Series 🏞️
Hi everyone!
Today’s video is about Berchtesgaden,
a small picturesque town nestled in the heart
of Bavaria, Germany.Â
Its population is less than 8000 people, but theÂ
train station serves not only regional trains, Â
but also high-speed long distanceÂ
trains. That’s all because this small Â
town is very popular amongÂ
tourists for many reasons.
Berchtesgaden is famous for itsÂ
salt industry. Salt from here is Â
delivered to Bad Reichenhall whereÂ
the main salt factory is located.
In Berchtesgaden you may visit aÂ
Salt Mine museum. The tour starts Â
with a cool ride on the train you see onÂ
this video. Unfortunately filming during Â
the tour is forbidden, so I haveÂ
nothing to show you in this video.
The infrastructure of the salt mine can be seen Â
in the nearby surroundings. ThisÂ
small tunnel is open for anyone, Â
you don’t need a ticket to pass it.
There were even more tunnels around, but they were closed.
Besides the Salt Mine, Berchtesgaden is also famous for the restaurant atop of the Kehlstein Mountain.
The building is called Kehlsteinhaus – or in English The Eagle’s Nest.
This building was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party Â
for government and social meetings. This isÂ
one of the few buildings of the Obersalzberg Â
Nazi-Government quartal left intact. However,Â
this building is open only during the warm season, Â
approximately from May till September, and becauseÂ
I was here in March, I had no chance to visit it.
Besides The Eagle’s Nest, there’s also a museumÂ
called “Documentation center Obersalzberg”.
It tells you more about the dark story of thisÂ
Nazi-Government quartal and about many crimes Â
that were committed here. I very much recommendÂ
visiting this museum. Filming in this museum Â
is not allowed, maybe some of the exhibits shown in the museum are private?
As part of the museum you also visit the bunker ofÂ
the Berghof, Hitler’s residence.
Reserve at least two hours for visiting thisÂ
museum, there’s a lot to read and to see.
Not that many people know about it, butÂ
not far from the museum there are ruins Â
of the Hitler’s residence itself. NothingÂ
except ruins is left. It’s somehow scary Â
to understand that this was a placeÂ
where most of the decisions related Â
to the Second World War were taken, they tookÂ
the lives of millions. Absolutely evil place.
That’s not the only evil place in this area thatÂ
is closely connected to the dark story of Germany. Â
One more is located not far from Berchtesgaden.
Berchtesgaden Chancellery Branch office.
Please don’t visit it, this is a private property nowÂ
and the owner of the property doesn’t like any Â
guests and his behavior is aggressive. IÂ
don’t know what is the problem for him, Â
it’s the historical building, so obviouslyÂ
there are people that are interested to Â
see it even though it’s not a museum. There’s aÂ
big sign near the building that tells about the Â
history of this place. There’s even a WikipediaÂ
article about it. If guests are not wanted, Â
why did they put this big sign, obviously forÂ
visitors… and why there’s no sign “Do not enter” Â
or something like that. Well, anyway, even ifÂ
we don’t understand the owner of the property, Â
let’s respect his right for privacy. Please don’t disturb him and don’t come here.
For those seeking outdoor adventures,Â
Berchtesgaden offers an array of Â
walking trails, including the scenic pathÂ
along the hillside overlooking the city.

In one of the next videos I will tell Â
you about the Berchtesgaden national park,Â
