═════ GOOGLE MAPS ITINERARIES:
► Recommended standard route in your own car, starting and ending in Dawson Creek:
► 1-week rental car loop starting in either Anchorage or Fairbanks.
► 2-week rental car itinerary from Anchorage or Fairbanks:
► Walmarts enroute:
► Notes on maps above: Cities in itinerary are out of order. The gap between Chicken and Dawson City is the Top of the World Highway, which Google won’t show you in the winter. This is a good gravel road open only in summer.
═════ NOTES & CORRECTIONS:
► I was WRONG about rental cars being affordable in Anchorage. They are affordable every month of the year EXCEPT June, July and August, when the rate goes way up. Rates were reasonable in May 2019.
► Also consider renting in Edmonton or Vancouver. The lower rental car rates may justify the longer travel time. Between the two cities, I would favor Vancouver, because British Colombia is highly scenic in itself. (Edmonton to Dawson Creek is unmemorable.)
► The alternative western route to/from Vancouver is the Cassier Highway. I don’t recommend it mainly because it is boring, with none of the history of the Alaska Highway. You may save some time, but not a lot compared to the Alaska Highway, even to and from Vancouver. Part of the road is gravel, but I don’t remember how much.
MUST-SEE ATTRACTIONS:
► Liard River Hot Spring
► Hike to bluffs overlooking Whitehorse
► Klondike Goldfields and dredge near Dawson City
► Dollarama in Fort St. John
► Watson Lake Sign Forest
► Abandonned roadhouses.
► Rancheria Falls, Yukon
► Five Finger Rapids Recreation Site, Yukon
