Florence can be safely described as a city of art, because it is here that the Italian Renaissance was born. Monuments and beautiful architecture make a great impression even on travelers who have already seen a lot, and some even think that Florence is even more interesting than Rome! Although the capital of Tuscany can be crowded, its irresistible charm, narrow, charming streets and views make you want to come back to it.

Florence is located in the central part of Italy, at the foot of the Apennines. The Arno River and three smaller rivers – Mugnone, Ema and Greve – flow through it. The city is inhabited by about 400,000 citizens, and each year it attracts a huge number of tourists. No wonder, the capital of Tuscany is famous for its monuments, it is here that artists such as Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli created. In 1982, Florence was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The city can be explored on foot, the distances are not large, and literally every step you will come across something worth attention. Among the most famous monuments, the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Il Duomo), which is adorned with a monumental dome by Filippo Brunelleschi, should definitely be mentioned.

One of the oldest buildings in the city is the Baptistery of John the Baptist (Battistero di San Giovanni Battista), built in the years 1059-1128. The basilica in the Florentine Romanesque style is located in Piazza San Giovanni.

While strolling around the beautiful Florence, it is impossible to miss the statue of David, which is one of the most famous works of Michelangelo. The original is in the Accademica Museum and the replica can be found in della Signiora Square. On the same square there is also another great work, the Neptune Fountain, a sculpture from the 16th century, made of marble and bronze.

Art lovers should definitely visit the Uffizi gallery, where they will be able to admire live works of such masters as Botticelli, Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Titian. Another attraction is the Pitti Palace, the largest in Florence. From the outside, it is simply a huge stone structure, but inside, the traveler has a chance to admire the stunning arrangement. There is a silver museum with an impressive Medici treasury and a costume gallery where you can learn about Florentine fashion over the centuries. The royal chambers decorated with splendor are also impressive.

The most popular viewpoint is, of course, Michelangelo’s Square, located on the San Miniato hill. It is here, in one place, that you can see all the monuments and see the entire city.

The whole day of intensive sightseeing will surely increase your appetite. In Florence, there is no shortage of pubs with a more or less sophisticated menu. In the capital of Tuscany, among others, stewed beans, red meat, pasta and wine are served. A lot of bars also offer sandwiches that you can eat not only for breakfast. Of course, the basis for your morning meal will be Italian coffee. True gourmets should go to one of the local markets in the morning, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit and interesting delicacies.
