Traveling to the CHURCH of DEATH in the Czech Republic
[Music]
you
[Music]
hi there good
morning it is currently 41° fahit that
is 5° C and raining some spring we’re
having here in Prague today is actually
a quite momentous day for both hippies
and
Nazis it is April 20th
420 for the hippies Hitler’s birthday
for the Nazis as somebody who isn’t a
fan of Hitler and doesn’t smoke weed
it’s just another
day
so the plan for today is to get to the
uh Church of Bones which is about an
hour’s uh Journey outside of Prague here
the weather is supposed to be better
tomorrow
so we’ll see about that not great for
exploring but I’m going to make the most
of it as best as I can first I got to
get to the uh main train station and
then uh get a train or whatever bus I’ll
find out once I get there out to the
town where that church is out there you
can see the uh Charles bridge the most
iconic Bridge of
Prague the Prague Castle up on the hill
there crossing over the vava
river all right let’s do it one day in
the Czech
Republic so there is one of the uh old
style
trams and another
one different
style so
I would like to catch one of these
things that is the direction I need to
go in but I’m not sure how to do it I
mean I could just get on the tra but as
far as being valid having a ticket I
haven’t figured that out yet I remember
in uh Brad laava the capital of Slovakia
when I was there then I got on the tra
filmed it and uh got a ticket somehow
and then people commented under the
video that I had selected like
child’s uh ticket or something and that
I was actually invalid and could have
gotten kind of in trouble for
that so uh there doesn’t seem to be
ticket
machines
around okay what to do what to do just
get
on I can see the thing where I need to
validate miss that one by half a second
they run very
regularly but
uh
obviously there is something I’m
[Music]
missing okay I asked somebody and
apparently I can use my tap credit card
[Music]
okay that didn’t work for two
reasons the
uh little yellow box in the tram didn’t
look like something that was going to
work with a credit card because it just
had a slot that said enter ticket or
insert
ticket and then also it started going in
the wrong direction so uh
back to the
walking so I guess uh maybe I could get
tickets here at the Metro station but it
is only a 20 minute walk from here it
looks like a nice walk so I think I’m
just going to walk
it lots of groups out and about I’ve
noticed are they walking city tours or
something it is a Saturday
oh okay
oh valand dafa the Chinese
uh
exercise
routine similar to felon gong I
guess oh
now I recognize where I am I was
here in my last video there is the uh
big tower that I showed
and I had wanted to see this uh building
but it had been a long day of walking
already and I was tired and didn’t want
to get distracted going that way so we
can see it today I think it is a
museum
oh quite an interesting sight despite
the
rain Prague is truly an architectural
Wonderland stara radnich so there you go
narodne
Museum and the streets are
filled with umbrellas
so I just thought of a little something
to talk about here while I walk
along I think I’m actually going a
little out of the
way on my journey to the train station
but wanted to see this uh building up
close
so two
topics that came up
previous videos man oh man am I going
against the traffic or
what so the name of the country the
Czech Republic
or
CIA which I was uh a little confused
about and I’m slightly less confused
about due to the comments
so obviously the word Republic is
English so Czech Republic
is the English uh
term and then basically they wanted a
shorter name for the country so they
came up with
czechia but I guess it just doesn’t
sound
great and local people aren’t really a
fan of
it so you can use either one on Google
Maps it labels it as czechia so that is
an official
name but it sounds like people really
don’t like that name so I’m mostly
sticking with the Czech Republic and
then on the issue of is weed
legal
here
then it’s still kind of
confusing basically
no it is
not officially
legal but it is decriminalized
and I guess not really
prosecuted so you see all these weed
shops all over
Prague I guess a lot of the products
are super low THC but then somebody
commented that they got some ganja there
and it was is the real
deal so it’s kind of a gray area it
sounds
like but if that’s what you’re looking
for it might be worth a try
and maybe you can celebrate
420 as it was meant to be
celebrated but it’s not exactly
Amsterdam all right time to uh
check my phone
although I think that is the general
direction that very well could be the uh
main train station that I’m trying to
get
to yes this is
it we got
trains there you can see it says
praha that is frag that’s how you
pronounce
it in check
okay I have no idea of uh schedules
let’s figure it
out I think the town that I’m trying to
go to is
kahora okay that one obviously isn’t
going too far but uh here we have a
real and very long
train all right time to find the ticket
office here it says tickets
is a uh complication however which is
that looking on my
phone it is showing it as being a 2hour
train
ride I had searched
before on Google Maps and it was an
hour’s Drive I didn’t realize it was
going to be a 2hour train run because I
have to come
back I am not really in the mood for 4
hours of
sitting on a train today
so I need to uh get some more
information
and see what my options are maybe
there’s a
bus that will be
quicker signs pointing in various
directions now tickets are to the
left oh here we go Metro
tram
bus Airport
[Music]
Express so that was actually a ticket
counter for the Prague transportation
system here is the counters for the uh
long-distance trains while I was there I
got a ticket for the tram for 24
hours it was
120 check
coruna and we’ll also work for the buses
and I think the Metro all right let’s
find out about how to get to
kahora cool old car
here it is a motorized track inspection
car you can see it on the tracks
there manufactured in
1952 so there is good news and bad news
but mostly good
news the bad news is that the next train
isn’t until 12:06 it is currently
10:55 so I have an hour and 10 minutes
to wait for that train but the good news
is that it only takes about 50
minutes and there is another direct
train coming
back and so it will only
be an hour each
way getting there I got a tickets round
trip was
$279 check coruna that is 11 or
$11.75 us so good price five bucks each
way I have lunch in my backpack here So
the plan is
to find somewhere that I can get a
decent
beer have a beer to uh pass the
time and uh eat my lunch all right let’s
try to find like
a bar sort of a
situation but it’s the the color oh yes
this one Che thank you sir do you have
do you have hunger
hunga hunga oh no oh no no eating just
uh beer before the train thank
you
Che that’s what I’m talking about
actually I do have hunger that’s what he
was asking do you have hunger I do and
it’s in my backpack the
grub and that is a really tasty one nice
color as
well I guess I’ll have to wait on the uh
snacks uh until I’m out of here probably
can’t eat you know here but uh wait
until go EIT for the train and eat
lunch so that’s the beer I got the Rufus
point4 L for 65 Czech
coruna there you can see a
burger some of the ingredients you
can figure out what it is BBQ so
barbecue sauce I guess ched darum that’s
probably cheddar cheese and then
salaum okay not sure about that maybe
like salad like lettuce and tomato or
something and then mayona so mayonnaise
and kup ketchup for
$289
so 100 check coruna is about $4 so that
is
about 11 bucks and then the
beer is
65
65 cck coruna is $22.74
257 and I happen to have here just the
right amount of change left it’s a
little hard to read they make the uh
numbers really
small on the coins but uh it’s down
there right there on the bottom
50 this one is
20 this one is 10
and there’s one
so 50
70
80 1 it’s
65 so I’ll just give them all this and
then there’s a little tip
[Music]
[Music]
all right so it is now
11:42 the train leaves at
12:06 wanted to leave myself little
extra
time to uh find
the
platform
noora there we go looks like it’s the
train to berno what is the platform
number I guess Nest must mean
platform and it’s not up there
yet and a couple minutes later we got it
for
J so
where the heck is
4J I have no idea but this is the
general direction of the
platforms let’s do it first train
journey in Europe on this
trip boom
I think this is
it nice looking
train
could uh I’m not sure uh it’s train
to I’m
sure no this this way it’s to I see okay
thank you thank you right a little bit
little bit uh
South I see okay it goes at 12:06 so 126
no this one is
1203 so it will be another one okay yeah
thank you
man okay that is different
[Music]
oh I’m at that’s platform three I guess
this is
four huh okay I need to confirm that I’m
actually at the right place because
that’s what I was looking at huh I
thought that train was also going to
berno oh
great now I’m not so certain that I’m at
the right place
all right here we go it’s the same
platform
but a different part of it there is that
train leaving at
12:03 1206
[Music]
here there it says
[Applause]
[Music]
all right all right all right is going
that way H some going the opposite
direction of the uh move
the vehicle
[Music]
o
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
you
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
and here we are Kora where the weather
isn’t much
different it is raining
harder so I didn’t end up eating my
lunch because it’s going to be a little
messy so I’m going to uh eat here and
then get over to the
church there you can see it is 12:58 so
that was less than an hour’s train ride
pretty quick and then there’s another
train going back at
3:00 the next one after that is
5:00 so I think that I want to catch the
3:00
one 2 hours should be enough time to see
a church
[Music]
that might be it looks
familiar from photos that I saw online
let’s get inside the train
station where it should be a little bit
warmer to uh take a seat
[Music]
so there are buses
probably going in the right direction
but
uh for one thing I don’t really feel
like trying to figure out how to pay for
it and also it isn’t that far of a walk
so I didn’t have my uh lunch because it
was just kind of a little too cramped
and busy in there inside the uh train
station
so got to find a spot to eat
somewhere along the
way hopefully out of the
rain it is just one of
those perfectly
miserable kind of days weatherwise just
that cold chill the
wetness but the forecast is showing much
better tomorrow so hopefully sunnier
days ahead
so while I walk along here I thought
that I would give you a little bit of
information about where I’m going here
it is nicknamed The Church of Bones and
that is very literal the real name is
the sedet
uary a Roman Catholic Chapel located
beneath the cemetery Church of All
Saints part of the former sedle Abbey in
sedet a suburb of kutna H in the Czech
Republic the history is very very
interesting in
1278 Henry the Abbot of the
sister Monastery in sedet was sent to
the Holy Land
so Jerusalem the
Crusades by King autocar thei of B
Bohemia he returned with a small amount
of Earth he had removed from golgatha
and sprinkled it over the Abbey cemetery
so you know like a sacred ground from
the holy lands and so it was like a
piece of the Holy Land he was bringing
here and the word of this Pious act soon
spread and the cemetery in sedet became
a desirable burial site throughout
Central Europe in the mid 14th century
during the black death and after The
Hite wars in the early 15th century many
thousands were buried in the Abbey
cemetery so it had to be greatly
enlarged around 1400 a gothic church was
built in the center of the cemetery with
a Ved upper level and a lower Chapel to
be used as an uary for the mass Graves
Unearthed during construction or simply
sted for demolition to make room for new
burials after
1511 whoa
I almost walked past that without
noticing
[Applause]
it after 1511 the task of exhuming
skeletons and stacking their bones in
the chapel was given to a half Blind
Monk of the order according to Legend
between 1703 and
1710 a new entrance was constructed to
support the front front wall which was
leaning outward and the upper Chapel was
rebuilt this work in the Czech Baroque
style was designed by Yan
Santini AEL in
1870
Franc rent a wood carver was employed by
the schwarzenberg family to put the bone
heaps into order yielding a maob result
the signature
of rent also executed in bone appears on
the wall near the entrance to the
chapel got a
message basically they were exhuming
corpses or rather
skeletons because they
were digging up the Earth and then they
ended up with this pile of bones and
somebody eventually said make those
bones look better something like that
and so they arranged them into formation
so that is inside the church that is the
Church of
Bones the Church of
death and this is
cod Philip
Morris it’s not every day that I see my
last name and look at
that that must be the
church it is massive
it really is
[Applause]
huge man oh man
that thing is
[Applause]
intense so
[Music]
[Applause]
Gothic all right let’s see what it looks
like in
side the cian monastery sedet the Church
of the Assumption of the Virgin is a
building of the cathedral type going
back to the early Gothic from the years
1290 to 1330 in 1700 to
1707 it was gradually altered in the
gothic broke Style by Architects AEL
Ignat Bayer and Yan blage Santini the
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin
and the monastery building make up the
extensive complex of the cian monastery
and sedet founded in
1142 from 1995 is this Monument has been
on the list of UNESCO world heritage
sites so this is not
the area with the bones it looks like
guess it’s maybe downstairs or maybe a
different location not sure but this is
just
a typical Church by the looks of
it so it’s in a different location I
will walk over there next
[Music]
some
very dark and uh ominous paintings here
a man upside
down maybe that is
Jesus being taken down off the cross or
[Music]
something not sure but uh he’s upside
down
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
I think this is where I get tickets for
the
uary we have
skeletons those might be fake ones
there definitely a fake one it’s made
from
Legos Museum of bricks
man that is a chill wet
[Music]
wind okay where is this church of
death I’m ready to see the death
so uary I think that is it
[Music]
here we
go oh no
[Music]
it’s see what I can
do what a bummer no filming inside it
was really really interesting so I was
thinking of of trying to sneak some
shots but uh there were just too many
people in there and uh there were also
security cameras so it just wasn’t worth
uh taking a chance of getting busted
there but I will try to find some photos
online
so there are just bones and skulls all
over the place and they’re arranged very
artistically with uh
like you know Columns of skulls
with leg bone sticking out and in uh
like crosses and diagonals and Spirals
and then
uh big mounds of skulls all different
types of
configurations and uh shapes and
stuff thousands of Bones
and so it’s all in the uh basement right
here so I’m not sure why filming not
allowed I guess out of respect for the
dead probably but I’m filming the dead
here underneath the
[Applause]
ground a little bizarre for
being one of the main tourist
attractions in the Czech Republic and
not cheap either either it was
220 check coruna which is about $1 but
uh it is what it is as they say so I
still haven’t eaten lunch
yet and I’m thinking that uh despite the
food that I have in my backpack this is
a good opportunity to go somewhere nice
and warm and get a hot meal so let’s go
for
that there are some restaurants right
outside here
let’s try this one you Balan new
I guess those ones are real it looks
like so at least you get a little taste
of
them now imagine a pile of thousands of
skulls
so it was a little tight in
there to film so I didn’t uh show my
lunch but I got a beef goulash I had
wanted to order this pork uh stroganoff
that sounded really good but uh that was
no longer available but last night I had
this amazing meal at a restaurant in
Prague there so I will end the video
showing that I will explain what it was
now because it was kind of complicated
so it was a menu with uh multiple
languages and also had pictures and one
was uh like these little roll
things and
uh it was stuffed with
meat and then another dish that sounded
good
was deer deer meat
and so they were both uh main course
dishes but I wasn’t sure how big they
were going to be and also just wanted to
try both of them when I ordered it then
the guy said you know those are two full
meals there and I said yeah sure I’ll
just uh go with it so that brings up the
point that I wanted to make that uh
English is very widely
spoken here throughout the Czech
Republic and so of course that makes it
a lot
easier to travel around the
country and so
uh it was a little bit you know kind of
expensive for the meal last night but it
was amazing really tasty something very
uh different there it’s been a while
since I had deer
meat it has a very
uh distinctive
flavor but it was really good also the
uh
[Music]
rolls which weren’t rolls they’re potato
and then meat inside and then a lot of
spinach a big pile of spinach which is
great because I love spinach so anyways
that is going to do
it
for Prague tomorrow planning to
leave and go to chesky cruml I hope that
the weather forecast is accurate and
things get sunnier time for me to get to
the train station get back to Prague and
uh get inside where it’s warm see you
[Music]
[Applause]

It's such a pity you went just to the Ossuary, that isn't even in Kutná hora the town, but in Sedlec. Kutná Hora is actuallly a unesco heritage and has a beautiful historical center, one of the finest gothic centers in Europe, with Chrám Sv. Barbory and Vlašský dvůr as its biggest gems. You did the rookie mistake every tourist that goes to the ossuary makes.. And you actually had the painted townscape while walking through the underpass in trainstation there, with picture of town panorama in the end. Kutná Hora even used to compete with Prague for the spot of the capital, back in medieval times.
💚💚💚☮☮☮
its not a grey area its in the law personal is legal but i think all of it should be licenced and pottentially just not advertised like smokes
I was born in Czechoslovakia but never went to Prague.
Too bad, Gabriel, that photos & videos are no longer permitted at the Ossuary. Fortunately, when I was there in 2019 photos were permitted. So I have a lot of photos of that incredible experience.
Obviously you found some good pot , lol.. world traveler and lost..lol
i cant get enough of these videos my friend and the music is great too let us know the tracks if you have a chance
HI GABE GREAT VIDEO!, JUST WANTED SHARE THE APOSLE PETER WAS CRUCIFIED UPSIDE-DOWN BECAUSE HE SAID HE WAS NOT WORTHY TO BECAUSE CRUCIFIED UPWARD LIKE CHRIST
Example US arrogance: republic is NOT an English word!!! but a LATIN!!! one, res publica = public matter
Top notch music as always. Nice!
I am always so disappointed to see tourists going to Kutná Hora just to see the bone church and never actually making it to the main thing – the medieaval city center. You are out of the church in 10 minutes..
I am a Sedlacek! My great grandparents are from this country. Some day I would love to visit!
I felt for you as you sorted out the train platforms. They are one of my travel anxiety points. Once in Basel, Switzerland I got to the right train platform at 1:05 for a train departing at 1:15 for Wengen and a train was already there. I asked the platform conductor, a guy with a fancy uniform and a big hat, "Excuse me, is this the 1:15 for Wengen?" He looked at me imperiously, flung his hand up at a big clock showing the time, and said, "Does this look like 1:15 to you?"
Train station is large. So many displays. I will get lost for sure
Very neat and clean country. Many beautiful architectures. Seems like nice infractures with good transportation.
Why don't you visit any African countries?
It's too dark for me , weird country 😏
Thanks!
Go figure 1 of the largest produced to the cancer sticks, Phillip Morris, right next to The Church of Bones.
Also, the upside down figure, in the painting, might have been Peter, who said he wasn't worthy of being crucified like Jesus, with crucified upside down.
I love public transportation, after spending a couple of days on the California Zephyr last week I realized just what a dreadful state of affairs our public transport is in the U.S., I was embarrassed for Amtrak.
Superb episode Iam completely enjoyed Gabriel THANKS
Cheers @14:33
CITY LOOKS AMAZING AND THAT MAY NOT BE CHEAP BUT sorry caps – but it would cost same or more in Manitoba, Canada now.
Id be guessing its similar to Canberra, Australia when its "de-criminalised." If so, it basically means you can smoke it in private premises. You cant legally buy or sell it. So how do you get it to smoke it legally, you ask? You are allowed to grow two plants to a certain size.
You made it to the bone church near Kutná Hora!! What a bummer no cameras allowed nowadays. Granted I was there 24 years ago (2000) but I took a ton of pictures with my camera (pre-cell phone days.) Reading the comments I guess I did the rookie mistake too!!! I just took the train from Prague, visited the bone church, and took the train right back to Prague! After all these years the bone church just stood out from all my memories in the Czech Republic. Hope you enjoyed the experience regardless, and I hope the weather gets better for you soon. ❤️
I also agree with other commenters, I really like the longer video format as well , hope the editing doesn't make it too hard for you and burn you out. Have been missing these awesome daily updates, you're doing a great job! and it sux that you are not getting more views than some of the the more "mainstream" guys. Thank you for the content and Im sorry to have stupid arguments in your comments. Never intended to turn into a one sided debate by saying a have a (….)beer, haha Cheers Mate.
There is a similar church in Rome
Curious why you don't smoke weed…have a bad experience or maybe not fond of the effect?
You can buy tickets literally in all tobacco shops and many other shops, that's general rule for most of Europe. 🙂 In tram, there are 2 types of machines – smaller ones just for validating and biger one (mostly somewhere in middle of tram) where you can buy already validated tickets with your card.
420 is California penal code for marijuana possession. Weed smokers adopted name for weed. Also 187 is California penal code for murder
Are you going to be checking out Pilsen?
A human bone chandelier. I've seen it all now😮😮😮
Sometimes, it's quite frustrating watching your videos. If you google Prague tram, you will find clear information on how to buy tickets on the tram, and it even shows a picture. Then you get to Kutna Hora, but fail to see some of the sites. Is it your deliberate policy not to do research in advance?
The big chandelier made out of hip bones and the writing on the wall done with finger bones were for me the coolest features!!! It is almost 30 years since I saw it! Happy Travels
Historical accounts say the the Apostle Peter was crucified upside down deeming himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I wonder when they stopped allowing filming inside? I was there 2009 and they were allowed.
you lead a life few people do!… but doesnt it come at a price of being lonely often? 🙏🏻
Love your videos. Thank you for choosing the czech republic.
Astonishing 😮.
Been there
For a very experienced budget traveler you are
not very good with buying tickets to public transport. You use Google all the time, so why not do some research on the flight to your destination and learn the ropes?
For a Swedish speaker Kutna Hora must sound good. Well they have slutstations in every
city in Sweden…
Been in that little Church with the bones in 1996. We were there alone by then and it was very nice to see.
