what to do in Heidelberg, castle ruins, cute town, and more | day 5

welcome to the channel this is Meredith
and today is Friday I’m taking a day
trip today to heidleberg and that is
going to be a hopefully pretty Scenic
day um I just discovered that there’s
this huge Palace because I again I knew
nothing about Europe when I came here
and definitely nothing about Germany
I’ve never really wanted to come here if
I’ve been completely honest with you um
but yeah so anyway I’m going to go to
heidleberg and then check out the palace
and also the city it’s like a cute
little town like an old style town so
I’ll take you along with me there um
I’ve been helping out some potential
food things just because I haven’t had
much German food honestly I’ve been
finding that the food here is quite
salty if you can’t tell by my face it’s
like very round um just more than just
usual so um I’ll try to see if I can
find something that’s a little bit
better for my blood pressure um but yeah
anyway I’ll take you along with me I am
leaving here pretty soon it’s 5:50 um my
train is at 6:38 from the Central
Station so I just want to be a little
bit early just so I don’t miss it um
because I have a connection at the next
station and um then I’ll be taking the
express train into heidleberg um so if
you’re interested to see what I get up
to and hopefully some great views stay
tuned for that um and I’m going to just
be drinking my coffee and eat a
croissant because I I need a little bit
of sustenance right now cuz my brain is
like not functioning right

now I’m
this was a stressful transportation in
morning so the train I took from the
Central Station didn’t match the one on
the ticket but it was the right train um
and then they changed the gate at the
transfer station it was quite a quick
like short transfer and they didn’t have
all the reservations updated on the
train so I was wandering around looking
very lost

up on the station now also this train
was so empty and freezing cold opposite
of Brussels arrived and then to get my
day pass I need to go to the tourist
information booth which is right here
hopefully it should be pretty easy it’s
not open until 10:00 so I have 20
minutes to kill rather than just waiting
with all the Asian tourists at the
tourist info I’m going to go to a
cafe C

Nomad okay finish my my little bit of a
breakfast snack um because the uh
Castle’s actually kind of far so I have
to go back to the main station to get
the day pass and then I’ll head on my
way um the coffee shop was quite cute um
highly recommend it um good service and
stuff so you just kind of sit down if
you want to eat there um and then you
pay
after I bought the daily pass for here
um it was €4 but it also included um the
daily pass for the transit but also €9
for the the um Castle entry and then
also the barrel entry and um the
panicular and it also includes other
museum pass as well I forgot to say it
also came with this map um which is €7
value it has a walking guide on it in
terms of a walking path or walking route
so I’m probably going to do that later
as well

so I just got off the number 20 bus and
you get out right at the bottom of the
fic so you don’t have to walk it’s very
convenient okay so I only got the SCH
ticket I foras that it’s only for the
ticket um to get to the castle um but
then in the Blue Zone there’s also one
that goes to the Red Zone and then
there’s also one that’s the full entire
package deal this is more
info frightening s this is really

fast like we’re walking
anding okay at the castle stops so going
out
now there are so many tour GRS and
little kids around but I made it to the
castle area so I’m going to just walk
around the grounds for a bit going to go
into the
courtyard so this Castle is huge so
there’s part of it that is these ruins
part this is the courtyard you do have
to pay a fee otherwise if you just want
to go on the rest of the grounds I think
it’s free um and then there’s also this
thing called like the wine barrel I only
know this from like reading about at
like 2:00
a.m. doing some preservation I’m
guessing so I guess that’s where like
the gate comes
down wow these buildings are

huge need to go to a less busy toilet
hopefully this isn’t a disaster Choice
cuz it’s scary okay bathroom was super
clean Super empty but you can get a
better view of what’s going on here
but these are like
ruins here’s a little bird blurb for
you so that gate that we just walked
through is actually a high tower with a
clog for safeguarding the main entrance
entrance the dungeons in the
basement so this was the dwelling of
elector ruix II under the name r first
of king of Germany after
1400 so I guess they’re setting up for
some sort of concert right now so that’s
like the stage I guess yeah okay so it’s
like bright sunny so hopefully you can
see this I can’t really see the screen
but this is quite amazing the
architecture is like Romantic Period I
guess I guess since these are all the
kings like the I think that’s King
friederick johannas casm I don’t know
don’t know my German history or European
history for that matter

ger but
interesting you’re just going to have to
deal with my bad German okay so from
that view over there to the left is the
German Apothecary Museum and I think the
ticket includes entrance into that so I
might go in there a little bit later
when I want a little bit of a break from
the Heat

okay you get a view of the river here
too I have been wondering why there’s so
many Korean restaurants but somebody
loves Grand to face this

property I believe that is the Church of
the Holy Spirit which is kind of like in
the main plaza I guess of the city like
the city
center and it’s 11:55 so my guess is the
bells will be ringing for 5 minutes for
noon

okay next V of business going to go in
the Big Barrel I don’t know what that is
but we’ll learn oh it’s literally a big
wine
barrel if you’re into wine they do some
wine tastings here you can go three
regional wines
€150 there’s the there’s actually a
bigger wind ear it’s like three stories
tall so like you climb down down and let
me climb back
up truthfully it’s like 3 stories tall
so now I’m climbing up to the top on top
of it this is like the weirdest thing
okay honestly not sure what the tourist
attraction of this is I’ll have to
research the uh implications of why this
is the thing can truly get all angles of
the huge one

here’s some whing I’m letting the Viking
tour group get a head
start I’ll have to see if my sister
wants
some Sony just kidding Let’s what out
every Wine Bar say so again this is the
German Pharmacy Museum not Apothecary
whatever same thing going into the
Apothecary Museum
unexpected in the children’s Pharmacy
section lot of info about dle medicines
the connection with
trade history about the change to modern

medicine there’s a kid in here who is
like super duper knowledgeable I don’t
know how he retained all that knowledge
he’s like seven but
it’s kind of interesting depends on if
you’re into Pharmaceuticals or not about
the naming conventions of
pharmacies there’s a
unicorn some very specific reading
material one’s in
English Okay I’m going to exit out of
the courtyard now and see if I can see
the rest of the grounds
and then probably head into the old city
center area or whatever they call it Old
Town some people walking up look very
pooped I wonder if they walked up the
entire Mountain

okayy I see why people were out of
breath this is pretty steep I’m curious
now if I’m not taking the finic down
because this looks like it goes pretty
far I think I’m going to go check out
the garden cuz I read that that’s
supposed to be very nice but it looks
like if I want to continue going exit
I’ll just keep going down the hill with
those people and then behind me is the
courtyard obviously where I just came
from it’s so crazy that that’s so far

up as is the case with most of the
places that I try to find the signs just
disappeared so hopefully I’m not going
the wrong way up this hill cuz it’s
pretty
steep crossing over this bridge thingy
which should go to the
Garden seems like there are local people
who just come and sit in here in the
park and like read and stuff which seems
ideal honestly okay so you don’t even
have to pay to come in here so if you
just want to come and take in the view I
don’t know necessarily if I would pay
again to go in it was good for one time
but like multiple times probably not
so there’s like this horse statue in the
middle of the courtyard well I don’t
know what this is actually it’s not the
courtyard oh huge Dragon flight but has
a brush as a tail but also like dang
those eyes and and teeth and it gets
creepier as you walk around it what the
heck and this is like some sort of God
I’m
guessing the big
gate so here’s the gate I think it means
big gate but I guess that’s the El tric
fountains in
it this is more part of the ruins here
off to the side here is a covered spring
I guess I can hear
it there it is there is a cafe here um
this is in the public area without a
ticketing um but I’m going to go down to
the city center I think okay so I just
went towards the place that’s label to
exit but then I’ll go down the vincular
so we just turn around but a better view
of the city and this is the old part of
the city there’s a new part as
well I’m going to try to cross that
bridge over there um that’s the old
bridge and apparently um you get like a
really really really good view of the
castle there’s no way to really go over
there in public transit though so you
have to hoof it but
going there’s the snack cart outside on
the way to the fin and they have wine
and such beer to climb up here a little
bit cuz it looks like there’s some
restaurants and stuff I’m just curious I
ate already breakfast kind of late so
I’m planning on eating like kind of like
a
midday sort of
meal okay it looks like there is an
Italian restaurant here I’m not going to
keep climbing up there it’s very far
stop conm Mar station out Town final
stop okay heading Through The Pedestrian
walking Zone um it was a pretty slick
tour so um again I don’t know if I would
necessarily pay to go again but if you
do get the daily pass it will have the
admission included and the finic ride as
well a Plaza in front of that church
that we saw from up on the top of the
mountain so this Cafe is right in the
plaza area and I had scoped it out it
looks pretty good it does have um CED
payment only no
cash okay this is like very like what
you think about as Old Europe you know
style or at least what I think of as Old
Europe style towards the river cuz I
assume that’s where the bridge is I find
it eventually I think I just missed the
no just kidding it’s

bridge entrance
is this here thing is the marking of the
old bridge entrance and then this is a
landmark the monkey with a coin going
across the
bridge so apparently with the um day
pass you can also get a discount on the
boat tour the tourist information person
did recommend it I might do it I don’t
know I feel like my sunscreen’s already
wor enough
walking towards the other side lot of
pretty houses over
there I’ll come back the other way show
you that view a little bit more it’s
really

hot adding this in for my sister but
it’s perked well
but just walked over that Old Bridge
bridge over there is the castle
obviously couple of
churches it’s actually a really perfect
day it’s not too hot I’m going to try to
go up this path it’s all in German so
I’m not going to help you um but up here
apparently there’s a good vantage point
if it gets too hard or too steep I’ll
turn around cuz I’m only wearing my
Nikes today um but there’s also
something up here called the philos
philosophers walk which looks curvy also
it looks like there might be Eagles
twisty
curvy definitely not great if you have
mobility
issues each turn gets more and more
difficult for people with mobility
issues I’m wondering if it’s worth
it there’s some sort of thing in
there I think I’m going to call it I
think I’m going back on the other side
because I think this is just like um a
paved nature trail eventually you do get
up to another Market Square area but I
don’t think I need
that view is really good but I just
don’t have time cuz I’m only here for a
day I think if I was here for longer I
would stay but um I do think that the
vines on the side I think they’re grapes
cuz again there’s grapes on the on the
ground and it smells definitely like
wine so um I believe we are in the wine
region of
Germany sorry I’m trying to dodge all of
the big
chunks let me put my camera

away made it back I can just tell you a
lot of the people that I passed look
pretty miserable so make sure you bring
water sunscreen May a hat a
fan okay so every city has its own
little heart lock thingy
[Applause]
but I just reapplied my sunscreen and
now it’s all over my Black Backpack oh
it looks all blotchy and white it’s
because I have this like chemical
physical sunscreen um mix so the
physical is just making everything look
really white cast and my backpack is not
white so I have to wash it or something
okay Crossing back over to the Old
Town looks like it’s starting to get
partly cloudy which is kind of nice it
was direct sun for a while it’s not too
hot it’s not like 90° but I mean it’s a
little bit hot especially if you’re
walking a lot and the Sun is like
directly overhead which is why I
definitely remember to put on my
sunscreen those palm trees
that monkey must mean something maybe
it’s like the royalty all it says
monkeys or
something okay I think I’m going to go
grab some food I’m actually quite hungry
it’s like 2:00 so that’s the plan next
um I looked up a couple of Brew houses
and maybe I’ll do that cuz it sounds
like something interesting to do very
local maybe I need to get a
coule it’s a souvenir this is from the
cafe kundo so I think this was Carl’s
part seems like there’s a lot of tour
groups meeting here but um there’s
plenty of Market plazas in the
city some sort of old timey car show
right now um there’s a lot of people
driving around in like really old style
cars but again I’m trying to make my way
I keep getting distracted though by the
views I saw this earlier but I had no
idea frame of reference
weird car show see what I mean by old
timey cars I mean real old timey
cars I actually walked past here earlier
but I’m going to go to the veter Brew
House
here that’s 2:45 no wonder I’m
hungry I got the English menu
finally I ordered that special so it’s
the white sausage and here
I’ll see how it
is so that’s special um it wasn’t in my
English menu but just ask for the daily
special or whatever um but it comes with
a huge beer it’s like probably half a
liter old tiny car show going right by
the
restaurant God they have very very good
B so I got two sausages they look a
little little La cluster but that’s the
traditional style I guess a pretzel and
that huge beer and it was all for 11

Future maybe we’ll put up the door again
cuz that guy looks really

interesting okay so this is the inside
of the
restaurant there’s actually a lot of
tables and there’s also outside tables
as
well this one was like a clown
car trust me this next one is
funny VW bus
like
America okay it’s about an hour hour and
a half so I’m going to just like walk
around this town area maybe pop into the
museum before heading to the I just got
distracted cuz this is my Curry worst my
sister and I’m talking about Mr Curry
worst um but yeah before heading to the
train station might stop at that
University Museum cuz I want to see the
student prison honestly so when they say
sweet shops they just mean like weird
American stuff that I don’t even think
I’ve seen
ever okay some of them I think got a
little bit Sun Bach but heel look okay
this shop is super cute maybe I’ll stop
in here they have some of the postcards
like I bought for cologne you know like
the pow party style so maybe I’ll get
one for here cuz I mean this was a
pretty good highlight and I guess the
white BR worst is like something from
here um I read it in the menu but guess
it’s true okay so this shop super cute
if you’re looking for a cute souvenir
they have like the little camping mugs
like the ones that are like metal and
they also have the ceramic ones 1050
they also have little espresso mugs
$15.90 this is a liquor
store but that one sounds
delicious my friend was legitimately
just T me up with g&
chees melon liquor if I weren’t waffling
between having oh oh my gosh pigeons um
Fe and having a carry on versus checkin
I probably would have bought some liquor
there they had some PR good options
should I go into the fruity gummy store
kind of expensive but they have some
salt licorice if my friend didn’t just
get me some from Norway I probably would
buy a bunch of salt
licorice I hate myself but I might do it
and then these are the espresso
cups Just for
Germany okay so these are1 1890 and I
can’t just saw it so it’s like $20 us so
just going to show you look like okay so
I decided I’ll just kind of look through
the museum and then I’ll try to figure
out if I want to go shopping and stuff a
little bit more a little bit more
browsing before I head over to the um
train station I also think I’m going to
grab like a Oni guy I found an Oni guy
shop so I’ll have something for a snack
if I get super ravenous you know that BR
words probably won’t or like white wor
probably won’t last that long
okay so this is like the plaza by the
university dang the sun is directly
overhead it’s so bright again Google
Maps says that it’s in the student shop
the uni shop is where the museum is
we’ll see student prison is included
with my
tour need a one yearold coin to get the
locker and you can’t bring anything in
it looks like all of the info’s in
German has to be expected but just
letting you know all of the QR codes
open a YouTube link but they all in
German for my brief check I got really
lost I’m in the grade Hall of the campus
somehow got to go back to the prison
because the museum was fine but it was I
don’t know I don’t know how much it
would cost if you didn’t have the ticket
off for the great all there’s also a
toilet just so you know it’s free okay
going upstairs to the student
prison so I guess this is famous I’ve
never heard of it and a Martin Queen van
so makes
sense I hope that stuff is like actually
original I don’t think it is cuz this is
2004 people need to quit to facing
public
spaces and historical spaces

there’s somebody actually working on it

there also restoring in here it’s quite
interesting
actually 15 minutes was more than enough
for both of those sort of um exhibitions
unless you can read German then I guess
and you care about that sort of History
stuff then maybe the museum would take
longer um it was fine I don’t know let
me know if you’ve been there before and
if you thought about so this is the
university area at the front so I guess
they have a
lion oh there’s the museum sign it’s
easier to find this way I went down an
alley listening to people from a cruise
and they were talking about this store I
think they said it’s an all year
Christmas store so maybe I’ll take a
look to let you know if I think
anything’s worth it and worth a stop
it’s right across from the University I
mean it’s a lot of Christmas they saw
the heidleberg card here C to get 3%
discount I guess that’s what the guide
say x few shopping on top of it I mean
if you’re into Christmas this might be
your store for me I’m not really a Decor
person I think it’s a waste of money on
my mom above this
place they’re all like 15 to
20 almost 30 dang you have to really
like Christmas a lot of upset males in
here $7.95 okay these aren’t quite as
bad the other ones were like 30 that
one’s
funny smell 35 for my sister cones 325
or 225 depending on the
size those are so fast

Avent calendar I think oh okay I’ve seen
these before
I think you can get them in Minnesota
they’re
cute
40 these are intense e there’s
beines don’t know how
much yesterday when I saw this mouse I
thought it was a funky potato my
sister’s like no it’s obviously a mouse
but he he looks a little stoned often
like
look I ended up buying a magnet I forgot
to use my card for the 3% discount which
is okay I guess but I mean would have
been like 8 cents it seems like
something interesting is going on down
here so I’m going to go explore and then
eventually I have to start heading you
know towards where the bus stop is so I
can go to the train
station it looks like it’s a festival
that hasn’t started yet oh that answers
it it’s for the people who are in the
car
show I also scoped out this place for
lunch but um I had less reviews and it
was less convenient than the other one
but it’s a lot of similar words to live
by you know I love me a used bookstore
but I mean it’s all German so I don’t
know how useful it will be to

these are cute from Thailand I have to
show you at 0.5 otherwise you got crazy
flickering from the lights cuz I have
only my phone this trip These are nice
too from
Kenya I like the set my to way towards
the church that I saw from the top of
the um Palace but yeah so I don’t think
I needed the daily pass for the trains
and stuff because I’m only going to take
it there and back um so I don’t think I
got my money’s worth but it’s worth it
for the convenience I guess I actually I
think this isn’t the same church I’m so
confused there’s so many
churches this one doesn’t look as orade
on the inside okay the one I was in
first was the Holy Spirit Church the big
one that you can see from the top but
then this one was a smaller one that’s
off a little bit further to the east no
I don’t know what direction just ignore
mine those
are so many Five
Guys okay so this is science City
apparently got some statues here not
sure who they
are it’s Robert vilhelm
bonen now that I said it out loud is
that who the bunson burner is named
after I’m going to have to fact
check to the oniy shop it’s across this
Plaza Jaden you know airon
Sephora plus no trees is really really a
bummer for my
skin I cannot find the on cuy shop so I
will not be stopping there I
accidentally found it
there’s a lot of what I wanted but it’s
across from the grocery so I’m going to
go there sound interesting I didn’t see
this at my sisters the one by our
apartment and um Hotel the city location
is so much bigger all the attractions
are back way that way so I decided I’ll
just go to the train station early
there’s actually one more point of
Interest right by this bus stop that I
can go look at it’s really funny so let
me show you what I want to go look at
but that’s the police
station this is the Neptune fountain
random stuff you
find apparently the brush tail horse is
three legs and that guy’s three legs
what’s the significance my trains at
6:24 so I’m like maybe 30 40 minutes
early anyway I still don’t know what
time it is but usually I should be on
the platform 20 minutes early so I’m not
too too much time to
go steering long the into each other’s
eyes guys okay these penss are so cute
€3 though dang but there’re are 0.7 tips
so not my style

there can learn some history really
quick this one doesn’t have the Kinder
hippo
on I being a creep
dunan something else I found out so it
has ABCDE e so ABCDE talks about where
it is is on the platform so first class
is a dining car is B and then there’s
only two extra cars for Class 2 C and D
so I’m going to go to cndd
here so while I’m just waiting for my
train it should be here in like 6
minutes um I’ll just give you a recap of
the day um I think honestly two days is
the perfect time and actually with that
um Transit card thing like the what is
this city called I can’t even my brain
it’s hot uh if with that card it’s
actually a really good F oh my train’s
coming now so never mind hold that
thought my eyes deceive me death
perception um so two days I think is
perfect and then if you do like the
daily pass thing you get a twood Day
Option it’s actually only twoe more so I
think it’s totally worth it at that
point um because then you can actually
take advantage of the free tickets and
things um the one thing I would say is
if you are Mobility limited or maybe not
super fit an elderly like with some
joint issues or something this is
probably not the best city um just
because it’s like very Cobblestone very
old stuff like that um and a lot of
Hills um and then some of the other
sites and things you have to climb up a
mountain side it is paved but it’s like
Cobblestone paved sorry the train that I
thought was mine the brakes um so yeah
and then on top of that um there are a
couple of like little tour thingies you
can do like the tour bus it’s not Hop On
Hop off it’s just like you sit it in a
circuit and then similarly with the um
river boat it just goes up and down um
and then you can’t jump on any extra
places you just start and stop at the
same place
um so those I think would be good if you
have like kids or you’re Mobility
limited or something like that they also
are pretty cheap and my opinion um
compared to like what I normally pay
like when I went to Miami for the Hop On
Hop off bus to where that sort of thing
and then on top of that you also can get
a discount with that um card that I had
the tourist card um I would say that I
don’t think I got my money’s worth with
the tourist card but that’s just because
I only had a limited time and then I
also didn’t Pi the train that many
places or the bus also my lunch is
sitting in my stomach like a bag of
bricks because it’s also hot so I just
feel like kind of gross um I didn’t buy
any food or anything so hopefully I’m
not hungry I do have a bag of chips in
my backpack from Brussels

transferring to go to the Central
Station just made it got to get on
that’s a dirty train

though oh this is cute little
town you know that that gate thingy is
actually an event
venue back at my sister’s Airbnb she’s
been keeping this in the fridge for us
we’re going to try this special Visa
beer okay we’re going to break into
these but one second by way of a review
of the other chips that I got the sea
salt and pepper one black pepper um they
actually have like a little bit of an
extra flavoring in it it’s kind of like
the sour cream and onion flavor like the
milk powder flavor um so it was actually
quite good but the the ridges are not
Max so it’s supposed to be Max crunch
but it’s more like a um Ruffles sort of
texture it wasn’t like a ridgy sort of
texture or wavy sort of texture it
wasn’t like wavy lays anyway that’s my
review they were quite good and I would
buy them again and they were very good
on the train when I was kind of hungry
but kind of not hungry oh okay so these
ones actually look thick so they have
like a very interesting smell it really
does smell kind of like um sour cream
and onion does but like I feel like
that’s going to be my comparison um but
with a little bit of some other sort of
vegetable um so I’m guessing that’s the
peppers so I’m going to give it a taste
test also look at that premium crisp
it’s like so thick and like perfect and
it’s like not
crushed okay so it’s kind of sweet and
it also kind of tastes like very Niche
not really that Niche it kind of tastes
like the Korean Cheetos like it has a
little bit of a flavor to it um but it
also has like a little bit of the sour
cream and onion flavor as well these are
pretty good but the crisp was real good
like it was really crunchy and really
really intact
okay so the sun only goes down at like
10:30 it’s 10:30 now but people are
eating so late and it’s like real meals

too I think I’ve been out for 17 hours
today I am obviously back so I had a
little bit of a hiccup here nothing is
complete without a hiccup um but
something happened with my door lock
that it wasn’t recognizing any of my
keys it was weird it was turning green
but like it wouldn’t unlock the lock um
it happened when I was leaving this
morning too like coming back with my
coffee um I had problems unlocking it it
didn’t work with my card but I could use
my mobile key um but this time I tried
both of the cards and my mobile key and
nothing worked it was green but like the
door knob was stuck um so I had to go
get the help downstairs and luckily he
was able to fix it cuz I was like my
stuff is in there he was like well did
they fix it when you left this morning I
said no I I was like I was late so I
didn’t do anything um but yeah so he
gave me two new keys and now they work
um so oh that was a little bit stressful
cuz I was like kind of sweaty I kind of
had to go the bathroom because I drank
so much water I was feeling very parched
and dehydrated so I bought like a 1 and
1/2 lers of water and then I had like
three Waters in my backpack and those
were all half liters and I drank all of
them so um yeah anyway I am home and I
am going to go to bed my sister and I
are going to meet at about 8:15 tomorrow
morning um we’re going on another day
trip so I’ll take you along with us as
we go there um this time my sister will
be with me um not that you’re going to
see her but I at least I won’t be alone
getting lost by myself um but thank you

After being in Germany for a few days, I finally visit a castle haha. I did a bit more exploring. I provide you a bit of info of what to do in Heidelberg. This is my day trip to Heidelberg.
