Driving in Italy! Should I Be Terrified?
hi guys Chris here with super savy
Travelers hey today I was out and about
it’s a holiday today uh and I was
driving um so not the smartest driving
on a holiday uh although I have to say
last Sunday was even worse I don’t know
what was going on last Sunday but
everybody was out and about driving and
walking and oh so let me give you some
tips on driving in Italy specifically in
southern Italy but I’ve seen this kind
of throughout Italy um and in Rome
before I say that I want to put in a
caveat you know everybody talks about
all Italian driver
I’ll tell you something they’re not the
worst on the planet when I was about 17
years old I spent a year in Brussels not
even a year it was like nine months in
Brussels and during that nine months I
saw three horrifying accidents um two of
them having to do with pedestrian one
was a bird okay but still it died right
in front of me to me it was horrifying
if you’re 17 is horrifying uh
nonetheless the other was one was an
older man one was a little girl and
thank
God they W they seem to be unhe hurt it
was such a close call with both of these
guys and I like to think maybe my uh
Guardian Angel who’s been so good to me
just wrapped their wings around them uh
so that they could be protected somebody
was watching over them and I really I
really believe that because oh it was
horrifying so um Belgian taxi drivers
worst I’ve seen I I’m just going to say
it flat out has nothing to do with
ethnicity race R uh gender anything like
that it’s just the taxi drivers in
Brussels that’s who these accidents were
caused by so when you’re in Brussels be
careful now that said the taxi drivers
in Rome terrifying although I have never
seen an accident they seem really good
at what they do nonetheless um just be
aware the taxis can be a little bit U
crazy all over the world all over the
world I was in Cancun at one point crazy
taxi drivers and it’s just nuts now
driving in southern Italy uh there’s
some tips that you need to know first of
all it is okay to take your time don’t
let anybody make you feel like you have
to go faster you don’t if somebody’s on
your tail you just slide over a little
bit and invite them to pass you up when
you do that they generally do if they
don’t hey that’s on them it’s not that
important to them to pass you up you
might as well get off your tail now
another thing is especially in
summertime or in the big cities um
driving in these big cities is like
being in a pinball game and you’re the
ball so you know there’s flippers
there’s this guy jumping out there’s
that guy pedestrians here do have the
right away and today today was just
crazy I to tell you in in one Span in
one 2hour period I had several things
happen that I said I’m going to mention
these on the channel today the first one
was seeing headlights coming right at
you because somebody is trying to pass
somebody and they didn’t give themselves
enough time or space to do so so you’re
like squeezing over trying not to get
into a head-on collision that that is
something that I saw today now another
thing is pedestrians just popping right
up in front of you this guy got out of
his car and I thought you know I was
right there I thought he was going to
wait for me to go by but he he like
barely shut the door and sprinted across
well it didn’t Sprint he was an older
man um and Dove across the street almost
a suicidal kind of thing and and didn’t
even look like wow that’s Faith lucky
I’m pretty observant but when you’re
driving in Italy don’t listen to the
radio don’t be distracted by anything at
all and just drive that’s my best advice
to you it’s not scary it shouldn’t be
scary just keep your wits about you go
slow take your time and let the other
drivers go past you if they need to
you’re going to be just fine so don’t be
afraid of it dive in and uh look for the
flow and I think you’ll be all right see
you guys
Hi Guys!
Ok let’s discuss driving in Italy! It is no more terrifying than driving anywhere else and there are some Italy driving tips you can use to keep yourself going. You can drive in Italy with your American driver’s license but if you are worried go to AAA and get an international driver’s permit. You do not need a special license to rent a car here either. Keep your wits about you and you will be fine driving in Calabria, Puglia or anywhere in Italy.

What are the requirements to drive? Paperwork?
A driver’s licence! 🥴
There is an unspoken rhythm in the way Italians drive.
I remember Rick Steve's saying when you want to cross the street as a pedestrian in Naples and Rome you go for it. Cars will stop, you obviously dont just throw yourself out there but when theres a break, don't expect for cars to stop for you.
We had a bit of a hairy time driving in Naples and we vow not to do it again lol… but once on the Auto Strada we loved it.
Driving styles by country are so interesting. In Madrid, they actually always stop for pedestrians!
Have You ever experienced the Driving in NYC and if so, at what time of day?
They drive like nuts in Italy.
Let's be honest, there are crazy drivers everywhere, even in the US. For many years we were full-time RVers. We encountered so many bad, inconsiderate, aggressive, and unsafe drivers in every state we travelled in.
