Tourism Promotion FAIL!? Reacting To Vilnius’ New Advert
so on April 4th go villus announced that it had released a new tourism promotion video the actual email sent out to Media organizations was this poor unknown and ex Soviet these are the stereotypes some British and German residents still have about Lithuania its capital vness and the whole Eastern European region however the city is fighting back the low expectations with the new tourism advertising campaign expectation versus reality so although I’ve thought about it before I’ve never actually made a reaction video but this seems like a great opportunity to try and it’ll be interesting to do it all without showing my face so let’s get [Music] started vness I think the odds of a random person in the UK knowing about vness is pretty low so maybe this to me feels improbable I would say it would feel more realist IC if the advert was for Lithuania more people would have heard of the country rather than the city of vness but okay let’s carry on vus you know what I instantly thought of my own neighborhood of shnipes kest when I saw this I mean not the apartment in the background but definitely the houses there’s definitely a few houses nearby that look exactly like this it’s hilarious that some dude is running away with two tires and being chased by another guy the pearl of Eastern Europe when the The Traveler arrives to vilus come on that is so fake smiling to complete strangers they are immediately Charmed I don’t know about the violence part but the Adidas tracksuits is definitely something I’ve heard of although from what people tell me it’s more of a conus thing and maybe not even like a modern conus thing but something that was popular a few years back by the joyful and welcoming at again who’s smiling to complete strangers ude of its people its cozy little streets and Rich architecture are a true photographers Paradise where the past meets the latest technology this part here is giving me total Borat Vibes although I admit that’s another cinematic work based on bad stereotypes just like every other European Capital well you can actually see this kind of thing outside Calvary Market or calvar utus and to a lesser extent Acropolis and vness has a flea market kind of thing that’s a little more organized but might sell similar items as a highly stylish city vilus is something for every kind of seral Shopper and of course hey that food actually looks decent to me it’s all about presentation and I think we can all agree that Lithuanian dishes do often feature meat and potatoes it’s vast array of gastronomic options ah pickled bananas and pizza Lithuanian Classics love it I heard that during Soviet times bananas were quite prized and cherished actually and when they suddenly became more easily accessible some people didn’t even know how to eat them I remember some Lithuanian saying that their Grandma when experiencing it for the first time ate it with a peel on like you would an apple crazy together with its Lively nightlife will blow your mind I remember waiting for a bus near the TV tower on a cold night in January and seeing something like this from the outside I mean it was probably more lively on the inside but definitely had similar Vibes in terms of lighting in the crowd so what are you waiting for come to filus and embark on an unforgettable Adventure okay this had to be filmed somewhere real so obviously that kind of place still exists and I’m sure that kind of crowd also still exists but maybe not in the center of [Music] vness ah okay here’s the reality well I can’t argue with any of this these are all great spots in the city that actually do exist yes there are lots of great food options in the city in terms of non- Lithuanian food there are some pizza places that I personally really like there’s also some usbeck and tajic stuff that to me is really tasty as well ooh hot air ballooning is a great activity to do while you’re in vness actually at the time of making this video I think it’s a little over €100 per person the hard part about it is that it’s weather dependent and so things can change at the last minute I have a video All About hotter ballooning if you want to check it out more great scenes of the [Music] city and that’s it well I thought that was a very fun and entertaining tourism promotion video I do think some stereotypes exist for a reason and the ones that you see in this video are no exception I do think you’ll see these types of scenes like not as exaggerated or extreme in little pockets of vness and definitely other parts of Lithuania I think you’ll find these kinds of scenes all across the region from Poland to bellarus to Ukraine I think if you want to see that side of Lithuania there are definitely opportunities but also the scenes featured in the second half of the video are real too and it’s all definitely something I get to enjoy on a regular basis maybe I don’t get to ride a hot air balloon as much as I would like to but I do get to see them float across the sky during the summertime and so what do you think about this video let me know by leaving a comment vilus the pearl of Eastern Europe when the traveler arrives to vilus they are immediately Charmed by the joyful and welcoming attitude of its people its cozy little streets and Rich architecture how a true photog
@GoVilnius has a new tourism advert! It’s pretty funny but has angered a lot of Lithuanians. Granted, they aren’t the target audience, and so it will be interesting to see how effective this campaign will be…
In the meantine, I thought I’d take a shot at a reaction video… so here it is!

100% first part was filmed in naujininkai
the amount of people who don't understand satire and want to show only good parts of vilnius is too damn high
Oh, why can't they make something just normal, that would really attract more people to Vilnius?
The shit exists in Lithuania near Belarus, including Vilnius, the normal things exist as well, but why do they have to show the shit and call it «just expectations, but not reality»?
What if people will come and see that it is also reality? 😅
❤Aciu
Advert makers set up a “hyperbole” premise with anticipation to massively subvert it, but in reality, Vilnius (and Lithuania as a whole) is somewhat of a mixture of two – some very pretty and cozy spots in city centre, as well as run down wooden house galleries on the outskirts or even within the city.
The beginning of the commercial was filmed in Markučiai, somewhere around here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zHwV1FP7n6Q5VQz36
I've heard some negative opinions of Lithuanians who were upset by this ad, or just didn't like it for whatever reason. I think it's ok and it uses the stereotype/thrash card which is not very common in tourism commercials at all :). I personally quite like it. I do travel quite alot to different European and other cities and actually try to visit those kind of places too as opposed to just visiting what's in the "good" part of the video. I do understand, however, that this is not what most tourists would normally do.
Lithuania Expectation: Hardbass
Lithuania Reality: Hardbass
I see no flaw!
Lithuania is North European country! Google it mate!
I have visited my family in Vilnius several times and my impression is that it is an interesting, attractive and cosmopolitan city. Unfortunately, I don’t think the promotional video’s strategy is a good one. Too much time is spent on the satire and not enough on the interesting parts of the city. I don’t think it would influence me to come visit.
It's filmed at the crossing of Pakrascio and Subaciaus streets.
Tourists who come from the West want to experience Eastern European things, so running an ad that implies they won't find any Eastern European stuff anymore is a bit counterproductive. Tourists often ask me where to buy old Soviet memorabilia or antiques. I don't know, but that's what they are looking for. Nobody wants to be stuck in the past, but that's just how it is.
I'm speechless that someone actually put a pizza in a jar
i just can’t wait to hear from HR about my application in Vilnius, sign the offer and be part of the Lithuanian citizen.
Talking about that…
In your opinion, are 3500€ gross per month enought to have a decent life in vilnius as a single person? is it a fair wage for an expat? i don’t pretend to live in a mansion or drive a ferrari, just to be able to afford a 1 bedroom house to rent, do my groceries, pay the bills and save for some trips.
Thanks for anyone that will answer.
I'm impressed by the number of people who lack a sense of humor. Even though this promotion isn't entirely to my liking as a promo of Vilnius, I find it very well done and funny.
BTW, Canned pizza is a piece of art, wow!
Never seen banana in soviet times 😀 And I was born in 1982.
Half a million waisted tax payers money.
I think a recent YT Short of yours is a better promo than this ad.
It's nice that a Westerner like you living in one of the least fancy places of this city has a good grasp of reality and not just either just good or bad.
THAT is some funny stuff!
if you compare vilnius vs kaunas vilnius is still gray city and kinda same as in ad
The clip with tires is filmed at 1 Pakraščio g. Vilnius, quite wierd place, to behonest, some industrial stuff, new stuff, old almost abandoned stuff, sort of mish mash of everything.
I would actually argue the fact that many people would know about Vilnius in the UK, they may not know the full in's and out's, but certainly will know enough to make an informed decision as to if they should go or not. I think the key thing that they don't know about Vilnius or LT as a whole is that it's actually a great summer vacation spot, especially over at Palanga… That's like some of the UK's beach resorts such as Weston-super-mare, or Torquay etc..but on steroids.. I think if more people knew that summers, although fairly brief are both warm and sunny, with the direct flights to Palanga – more people would come.
I think it was funny. Unfortunately auto-irony mostly works for a domestic viewer (sadly not for eveeyone). As a promotion targeted at a foreigner, I'm afraid, it can be confusing and misunderstood.
When I saw this video, reminded me of some area and stereotype locals in my own country tho. Weirdly not connected to my impressions of Vilnius 😂
I think it’s universal thing, every city in the world has this type of area and people. But still got a little bit surprised by playing this kind of dark humor in the ad. And people got so triggered and angry in the comments😅
I have friends from London, they came to visit me in Lithuania, and they commented that Vilnius is a clean, cozy, safe and beautiful city to live.
But for sure they made traffics and attention on this ad😅
Idea of commercial its not bad but execution bad. Because sarcastic part is to long and not everybody will watch until the end. And they form an opinion about Vilnius that its Borat home city 😀 😀 😀
as a 100% lithanian (with taste of humor), i find this commercial hillarious 🙂
Half my family is Lithuanian and we even have a family meme about taking two photos for every event. The Lithuanian One 😐and the normal one 😊.
This advert is hilarious and well done. I know friends who dont like it at all and some foreigners who love it. So its about of your views and sense of humor. Most of people who didnt liked were lithuanians themselves so thats not a surprise at all
I'm kinda neutral about this ad. It's funny and is meant to do a good thing, attract tourists, but I don't know if it will do that. The "expectations" part is too long, I'd say. Maybe people can click off and get bored or even worse, believe that that's how it is right now? I think they should have made this part much shorter and the "reality" part longer. Longer than the "expectations" part even because it is supposed to attract tourists, right? Then who are short and quick clips going to attract? They should have at least mentioned something interesting about these places, even if it's very short. At least maybe this would make tourists more interested. Now I feel like they're going to be more interested in the "expectations" part because it's funny and they're probably going to remember it better than the "reality" part. Or at least, that's just my opinion about it.
I dont see how heavy metal music is going along with the promotion of "postcard" views of touristy areas. It is a strange choice…
