Location, adjacent nature reserves and monument area
The armed forces Brander Wald training area, located between Aachen-Brand and Stolberg-Muensterbusch and covering a total area of 224.9 hectares, is partly occupied by the Brander forest (165 hectares) and Muensterbusch (124 hectares) nature reserves and is therefore not only nature conservation in large parts – and fauna-flora-habitat area but – at least after 5 p.m. and on the weekends – also a popular local recreation area.
Its eastern part in the direction of Stolberg-Muensterbusch is a protected monument area due to traces of Roman mining (Pingenfelder).

Military training area
As a military-historically significant ensemble, the military training area also shows traces of the Nazi regime’s rearmament in the form of newly constructed shooting ranges and associated ammunition depots. Many ruins of former West Wall bunkers and hump lines still characterize the landscape there today.
The square itself was prepared and put into operation in 1937 in connection with the upgrading and accelerated expansion of the western fortifications. Today, four-tiered hump obstacles from 1938 and 12 bunkers remain there as more or less badly destroyed ruins: two machine gun shelters Regel Buildings B 1-1 (No. 479 and 493), a double group shelter Rule construction 11 (No. 485), three Anti-tank shelters, standard buildings 20 (No. 484, 490 and 494) and six group shelters, standard buildings 10 (No. 478, 480, 481a, 482, 483 and 488).
Probably no large-scale razing took place here because of the training area and because part of it is protected as an archaeological monument due to the traces of Roman mining.

After the Second World War, the training operations of the Belgian and German armed forces also left their mark here: the tank wrecks parked there have become popular photo opportunities and playgrounds for people from Aachen and Stolberg.

Hump line between Eilendorf and Haumuehle
The parts of the hump line between Aachen-Eilendorf (Sebastianusweg, coordinates 50°46’20 N / 6°10’57 E) and Stolberg-Haumuehle (50°46’05 N / 6°11’59 E), which are partly located on the site training area ) are particularly noteworthy: Here you can find preserved pieces of the four-row hill obstacle from 1938 and also between Haumühle and Stolberg-Burgstüttgen. The hump obstacle between Gut England near Eilendorf and Stolberg-Buschmühle is particularly easy to see. This section crosses two watercourses on the site training area, the Inde and a small, artificially created mill stream. The closure of these streams was achieved using two I-section steel girders, remnants of which are also still present on site.
