What a beautiful city, I would love to vacation with family one day.
Well done video. Just one piece of advice for visitors from someone who lives there. The most beautiful period to visit these places are the months of May-June, because the days are very long and not very hot. In July and August the climate is very hot and the lake is also too crowded with tourists.
In 2014 Lake Como was defined as the most beautiful lake in the world by the US newspaper 'The Huffington Post, for its microclimate and its environment dotted with prestigious villas and villages. Period villas, status symbols in the golden times for generations of industrialists and silk lords. Happy retreat for the quiet Lombard bourgeoisie, and for international tourists in love with beautiful Italy. This is how Lake Como has always been, a reassuring place, far from the spotlight of social news. The fact is that today it has become one of the most fashionable destinations on the globe, to the surprise of the people of Como themselves, since George Clooney bought Villa Oleandra in Laglio, attracting the Hollywood star system from California. And it is for this reason, but not only, that it is increasingly crowded with American tourists.
In few other Italian locations can one find such a variety of environmental typologies, landscapes and human settlements. In a handful of kilometers you go from the high mountains to the lake, from the wild alpine valley to the hills, from the urban area to villages with a few houses, from ski slopes to parks with suntropical vegetation and wildlife sanctuaries.
Lake Como is a natural fjord and is a lake with deep waters, reaching 418 meters of depression. Its formation, which occurred during the post-glaciation era, over one million eight hundred thousand years ago, is due to the melting of a huge glacier. The lake was therefore formed in the cavity dug by the glacier, of which the signs of erosion left on the rocks of the mountains surrounding the lake and the numerous erratic boulders can still be seen. The marble quarries present in the surroundings of the lake have always been essential as regards the Lombard tradition of sculptors, stonemasons and architects, increased by the long and demanding construction of the Milan Cathedral.
Praised since the nineteenth century by the major poets and musicians of Romanticism, from Stendhal, from George Gordon Byron to Franz Liszt, the landscape offers a deeply varied territory rich in history.
Como is a city full of history and in its past it was of strategic importance for the entire region. Today it is rediscovered by tourism not only for its ancient buildings but also for its dozens of neoclassical buildings in the historic center, the lakefront and gardens. Como has several archaeological sites from the Roman and medieval periods (spas and villas). then religious architecture among which the Cathedral (14th century) stands out, finally Roman and medieval military architecture.
The lakefront of Como and its neoclassical villas is a journey through time that allows us to relive the historical period between the end of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century, a time in which the spread of the new neoclassical taste, connected to the ideas of the Enlightenment, finds fertile ground in Como.
The starting point of the route is the construction of the Volta Temple, dedicated to Alessandro Volta. The itinerary then develops following the enchanting lakeside promenade on the Borgovico side, where the most luxurious and elegant villas of the city were built starting from the end of the eighteenth century. Among these are Villa Carminati, Villa Saporiti known as the Rotonda due to the characteristic semicircular part that protrudes from the façade, designed by Leopoldo Pollack, one of the greatest interpreters of neoclassical architecture in Lombardy, Villa Gallia, the oldest in the district, the nineteenth-century Villa Volontè and finally Villa Olmo.
List of the most important historic villas located on Lake Como..
