Amsterdam Food Marathon!! Surinamese Food You Can’t Miss In The Netherlands!!

this is the Netherlands and it’s my first day in Amsterdam and I haven’t been here in almost 20 years I can’t wait to explore this beautiful city but first let’s take a step back the Netherlands is a small country sandwiched between Belgium and Germany it shares a deep history with Belgium Luxembourg and parts of France too but the Dutch influence extends far beyond Europe but it’s also tied directly to the Caribbean and even to the USA it’s a country that has its Origins as a patwork of marsh Land recan from the sea and then growing into its Zenith in the 17th century as a maritime trading power during the Dutch golden age from the enchanting canals of Amsterdam to the beautiful streets in roddam and the UNESCO world heritage sites of utri and most importantly I’m exploring the incredible Cuisine from Herring to Oi Ballin an ethnic Cuisine like camese food I’m trying the best food in the Netherlands I’m also answering one for all who has the best fries in the world Belgium or the Netherlands let’s find out today we’re starting off with an incredible Multicultural food tour if you don’t know this is the country full of Turks got Indonesians camese Moroccans Multicultural we’re starting off with some Turkish we’re going to need some tsunam and so much more let’s go visit my friend Howard and Melissa and let’s start this tour so in Holland there’s a couple of cities on the shore that are famous for the fist industry you have like Fen D you have sparenberg but you also have a and this is the a fish handle a is one of the Cities known for their fish activities so this is David Hi D hey good morning David pleasure David flies all around the world to eat some good food okay and now he’s in Amsterdam for the day and I’m I’m hosting him so I hear you have amazing Herring and fried fish okay kibling King I told him yeah I’m learning learning however you serve it well however traditional love this so Fish Market yeah oh it’s cold in here too uh yeah he slices the Herring into small pieces in order to make it easier to eat and of course he’s adding slices of pickles and freshly chopped white onion wow it looks so good wow everything looks amazing here you know which ones I love I love the tiny shrimp tiny shrimp those little ones right here mhm so good le le during the war the world war in Amsterdam you could buy a slice of Herring as well so that’s where the traditional slicing up comes from just a small slice yeah and also the tradition with the it doesn’t supposed to be eaten with onions but back in the day sometimes they have a day old Herring and then they say yeah just eat it with an onion just to mask the fact that it’s not it’s fresh yeah I get that it’s a straight oh there you go oh yeah tender it’s tender you have these small little bones but they go down very easily yeah oh yeah with the onions I like it and then the pickles there to refresh after the bite mhm nice and cold I mean I love fish this is really nice and um the flag so that is the three crosses of Amsterdam I’m going to tattoo this on right here really I’m going to put faka and that under or above the crass I asked him to have you taste another thing it’s a delicacy from them here M it’s mackerel but it’s called um spec Mel so if you have to translate it’s like bacon but then in a fishy way like a fishy bacon yeah it’s like a fishy bacon this cold smoked merel it’s very nice that’s really good nice yeah smokiness tender again Smokey but this is good fishy ma like normal the ma is like fatty and why is this dryer it’s like boiling they smoke it the ch this is called Smoke oh it’s um is like it becomes like yeah it cured by the salt so the Sal it takes the Rus if you take the Rus away and then this one warm smoked that’s warm smoked this one with the mael this is steamed that steamed and then smok have three portions so yeah yeah yeah there it reminds me of fish and chips you can hear the crunchiness right you can hear it so what do we got here like tartar sauce is like a Tarter and I can’t I can’t put myself here hold on hold on the bike the bike no it’s too many bikes so that’s like tartar sauce nice fried fish and what type of fish a white fish he he Cabo cfish oh it’s C so bakalo bakalo it’s maal it’s maal it’s Ma I love the batter and the herbs on it the herbs crunchy m still super hot oh I love it out here with this weather mhm cold with the heat now I’ll grab some of that tarar sauce on top this is very Dutch it is very Dutch yeah but this crocant that is crocant and K right this is cant and this is crunchy and crunchy it is ha it is ha like ha I want to try it with the sauce with the hot sauce with the hot sauce yeah here we go David’s been here hot sauce oh this is going to be a good mix yeah so right here I like how they’re small chunky bites yeah yeah just like that can I dip yeah yeah o I have to turn I have to try good leer leer the sauce and the kibing is a damn good thing mhm so Antonio you’re the owner I’m the owner what’s uh what’s the history of your business the history yeah it’s 50 years already H more e this uh it’s 63 years uh we are here and I’m the first of the fourth generation uh is’s uh the fifth generation so you’re your great-grandfather started yeah yeah and so what do you do here in terms of food all Seafood all Seafood yeah how do you say it menus and all kind of things we make uh the most self so what do you recommend when people come what should they try the Herring like we did and also the kibling anything else hering and kibling and we got a lot of oysters and uh fresh fish everything is nice it’s hardw working yeah for uh but but no fries no fries we have the same uh hair haircutting take a picture of you that’s so funny that’s so funny I love this the Herring we see how he’s deboning the fish and preparing it from beginning to end for safe consumption he’s pulling the bone out he cleans it and it’s ready to eat oh man the herring your name prince prince yeah prince prince where you from from Ghana from Ghana Fufu K banku I I I love Fufu from where Kumasi or Kumasi I’m from Kumasi Shanti that’s it that’s it man I’ve been I’ve been I’ve been to the it’s the biggest Market biggest Market in West Africa his town yeah yeah yeah oh man amazing amazing time in Ghana and so he’s uh cleaning the Herring so we have a bucket full of herring and he’s cleaning it from all this extra stuff pulling out some of those bones some skin and then slicing it down the middle and how long you’ve been in uh in Holland yeah almost 5 years now almost 5 years it’s really a skill to clean yeah yeah super SK I mean like it starts off in this you know nasty bucket and then it gets cleaned out yeah all the skin take the skin off mhm so do you consider this like the number one Dutch delicacy traditional traditional traditional delicacy there’s a tradition also when they saw the first uh case of theing I think and it goes for thousands worth a lot the first catch you have to we have first catch yeah if he comes back maybe because the freshest catch like like the first one it’s like a it’s exclusive for people to buy money like the first hading because it’s traditional but if we ask him he will tell you it’s like a big thing to buy that one and every year it goes up and up and up and we had slices but you can also get it and just go like this that would be better I think you have we’ll have it again we’ll have it again we and right here we have the restaurant cam flag outside amazing helloa baaka what I like about this place is they have traditional stuff like sardines I don’t know if a place where you can buy sardines for your you know w wow yeah this reminds me of how it is in Surinam like these windows like this yeah yeah they have paches they also have them vegetarian this is a bow you know bow right M love bow you know what’s in it it usually pork it really depends pom bom this pom pombo yeah bro super traditional guess you had a when oh yeah of course B so yeah and what is that I mean that that’s like a Chutney right here yeah that’s a Chutney so this is the owner hello David ran welcome thank you this is the boss you have the own the boss the boss small boss but so you speak only cames [Laughter] yes I love it so the thing is would you um have David taste a little bit of the Su boy yes of course one second I will get I will get you nice one so this is Su boy it’s from my own personal label oh wow you see com you you recognize the tunami flag in there and comu is my last name and compr is D for come and have a taste and this is uh it’s Cocos and ginger it’s Coco and ginger oh yeah so I’m going to have you taste this bam nice sound right okay unfortunately no proper glasses no I but yeah this is always good cocoa and Ginger Coco and ginger so what I need you to do it’s ice coold it’s like almost like Lon cello what I need you to do is like smell it first and then when you drink it you have to slurp it like around yeah Circle one time and then this is this is like crack bro give me more give him some [Music] more wow so it has a little bit of thickness it’s frozen so I’m Italian lemon Cheto is the best comparative but that coconut and the ginger man this is like the ultimate drink and it’s it’s alcohol yeah le le not this is amazing I’ll sleep with this bottle but also like orada orada is yeah the Almond from almonds oh from almonds so like in Spain it’s made with Chas yeah and in America they make it with rice but yeah the Almond version is way better I’m sure but it taste like tast the orada in this I don’t know it’s like all the combinations at one you taste yeah this is osada osada yeah some people drink it with milk take a syrup from it and then you can dilute it with either water or with milk yeah in Central America it’s a orchata but it’s made from rice so he’s saying it’s the best this is way better than orchata in Mexico I used to live in Mexico no this is nothing compared to that one oh my God this is [Laughter] amazing you know you can actually also mix it up with rum oh I’m sure I mean it tastes like orchata but no grains it’s pure it’s like it’s filtered yeah but it’s uh filtered elements this is amazing too everything’s been so good here cam cames do the best in my sauce when you try you’re going to tell me try I’m really curious about it so what kind of hey so we just used Casmir chili very easy so my partners they’re cames Americans okay we started at home now we moved up to bigger production all right uh so it’s pineapple guava and Kashmir chili it or okay smells good oh bro it’s phenomenal yeah a little bit like a chipot yeah but it’s better way better nice not too sweet little spicy so good because like some sauces are like clay but or just like yeah you just pour it and it just runs out but it needs to stay on the place where you need to eat it but this is good it’s really good this is our regular sauce you you just tried it you know what it reminds me of like a not like an archar but like a Chutney thick yeah but it it’s so uh pic sauce is actually uh it’s a derivative from aad but with uh with the mustard seeds and that makes it like uh more Saucy uh we try to use real vegetables and the vegetables are actually cut inside so they have like a this is the the chocolate scorpion it’s a a Spicer chili why why but it has so much more body to it it has like really itty tones yeah it’s spicy though it is spicy but it’s really addictive this no no I’m sure so it’s spicy but it goes away pretty quick not that bad no that’s because of the the chocolate scorpion it’s stinks like a it’s back here it’s like the very bottom man yeah and then and then it goes away all of a sudden I need some more of this to calm it down bro no I’m going to relax with drinking it’s okay man you’re in amdam yeah we also have like a Carolina Reaper but it’s just that’s just evil that’s just evil so how many sauces you got we got three sauces so so we got three different sauces here yeah and pom in there which is a casserole I still feel the Scorpion though so right here they have the Trinidad’s chocolate scorpion chocolate my trinis that’s that on the doubles you know that it’s the [Music] same yeah so this list has been around for 30 years 30 years take it we have to take it down but I haven’t had a time to do it but but you don’t sell all this anymore well the majority we still sell but some dishes were like out of fashion so we took them off but we also added a lot of more dishes so and what are so what are you doing with the Buns you steaming them yeah we’re steaming them now because like uh it’s a steamed bread so yeah keep them moist and here he slicing the bread and he’s adding Palm this is a very traditional type of sandwich in Surinam once he fills it up with the Palm he adds some vegetables also some spice into it and that’s it that’s the mild so you really don’t speak Dutch yeah they were like he only speaks camese killing me bro killing me all right here we go the cames bun bow with palm so we got to get some of this a aami aame is that what it’s called aam cames hot sauce so I’m going to put on the side is that good enough anuma anuma yes and I think it’s with a the p with P combined with the p yeah ready just dip nice fluffy bun inside pal so for people that aren’t as certain me what is pal p is like um Earth r that is like gr mhm good vitamins to make it this a whole process but then if you bake it you do it with um the chicken the marinada um and the sauce and then you let it set in the oven but it’s better if you eat it a day after a day after that is that dish that it takes a lot of time mhm and you can eat it with bread but you already eat mhm but this one is a lighter yeah this is lighter and uh this sauce I’m feeling it now the spice it actually goes up it’s not too spicy with the Pika and P is also in form so it comes back I think I’m just getting too much of it let’s go spicier no spicier this one’s the Trinidad chocolate scorpion it’s my trinis got my cames got my Tris that Caribbean oh you should to try to that’s super spicy he P down I feel it like right here starting to melt I love the bowel it gives you a different structure and also different flavor also different dimension it’s like almost like silky on the outside you going fluff then you have the pond that spice that spice I’m feeling it it’s like a safer Emoji more or less how want this spice we have to with the boy the cream of the alcohol oh comment down to neutralize it let’s neutralize it yes with the S boy with the Su boy I love the boy yeah I think it will take down the pepper dude I think I just ate too much of it that’s what happen you never have too much of it you never have too much of it the biggest difference between this the cinnamon bun and this the Fatu is that it’s more fluffy uh but it’s still it has a structure a little bit of structure of bread but it has no not a bread feeling at all so you should just try it it’s really yeah gooey and the sweet oh wow look and it’s made in rolls so you make the long rolls and you fill it with the cinnamon the filling and then you make the roll and then you cut it I mean in America we have cinnamon rolls it’s a little different and you said here it’s more complicated in terms of how they make it in the oven they have to open add more milk like this is it’s not the tast no it’s not even to compare with because this is really hardart it’s like a bed of rose petals cinnamon heaven right here mhm Fu Heaven F because Fatu making is a art especially to have it this small yeah nice layers break them off how long have you have you been in this location well in this location uh for 32 years but in total since 77 so uh 46 right now uh we are the second generation me and my cousin so my grandmother she made sandwiches and also sold like P called vegetables and fruits in order to make ANS mean in suram and actually it went so well that she could pay like the tickets for the whole family to come uh across the Atlantic few years later my uncle started a a record store here in the Netherlands it’s in the the west of the city and the record store was yeah it had like old soul and R&B music and Caribbean music customers that came in they knew about the sandwiches my grandmother always made and and they said like hey uh we want to have those sandwiches as well so instead of like when while they were listening to music then my uncle started like uh making sandwiches in the back of the kitchen of the store and all of a sudden um everyone was going into the kitchen to get more sandwiches and sandwiches and all of a sudden we had like a sandwich store sorry a a record store with a sandwich shop in the back he’s making one more thing though yeah yeah going anywhere this is one of the most famous traditional markets Amsterdam this is the Alber so you shut we’re actually going here tomorrow are you going to go here tomorrow yeah yeah we’re coming to Albert C tomorrow it’s the biggest Market in Europe wow it doesn’t stop so me Sal chips blood sausage and of course tripe when you’re AUM you eat this by the meter but here we just do a a regular small portion this is the best part looks like brains but it’s actually the stomach of a cow mhm and we add some red onions pickled ones and that makes it really really delicious yes just combine it little pickled onion yes so I’m going to try this let’s see I’m going for the blood sauces you don’t use real blood uh yes and the hot sauce also so what you do is you take the blood mhm you uh a little bit of sauce you mix it up with a bro you have to go like this yeah and then you soak it into bread and then put it in stuff it in a sausage and then you cook it so it becomes like uh tough and then that’s how they make it yeah blood sausage is different everywhere in uh in Argentina it’s full of rice yeah and you guys in seram it’s more like this it’s more like some people say black pudding yeah well it is actually uh derived from the French recipe so I’m going to try this one too now the tribe the try it I personally love it some people hate it I’m more organs I’m all organs the meat sauage it’s made from beef also more sauce and some people don’t need the skin I don’t eat the skin Oh I eat the whole thing yeah it’s uh my favorite is the blood blood for the wi it’s so tasty like it hey I’ll see you guys next time okay right next time next time thank you so much roll so which one is it this one this one laiz restaurant right FR you ready for some Lun yes these are the bike path you don’t stand on bike path unless you want to see a hospital from the inside so if you don’t know about Holland huge bike culture everybody’s on a bike but now they have these electric bikes and they fly they fly yeah they fly people have to wear helmets and uh yeah there’s a lot of accidents happen with people who don’t look out especially forers cuz they don’t know they just think this is a a part of the streets but it’s a bike path and to Dutch people bike path Are Holy the holy Grill it’s amazing here we go some Lun all right so we’re going into the kitchen and see how they made this lahon this is like the best Turkish Pizza of all time he’s saying this is one of the best in all of Holland yeah it’s one of the best I’ve ever had how you doing oh wow oh this is the best man okay Lun Turkish Pizza this is one of the best pizzas on the planet that is land mix with some spices on this nice thin layer of dough that’s the P bread that’s what makes this all so special but you know once they put it into that oven that’s the real magic wow it’s like 2 m long okay wow pepper pepp pepper that suar SL just like okay voila okay let’s go oh here we go I’m ready for this my man let’s try this look at the presentation it’s nice huh W it’s beautiful yeah this is just how they do it in turkey with a nice pepper on top got tomato and a little lemon you say this is lime or lemon here this is uh this is lemon c situm yeah sit let’s dig in so we got to spray some of this on top thank you onato aita I love this crunchiness you know crun crun cant cant cant crocant amazing Turkish food that is the number one minority or the the biggest minority in uh Holland the crunchiness is like it makes everything like yeah so good was noral Nor T is not this crunchy it’s a bit mushy mhm yeah and I like the the bread how it’s like a mix between crunchy and soft and also you see real means sometimes you only see like the sauce you don’t see the means mhm but this one is it’s good yeah it’s lamb lamb on bread it’s freaking amazing cuz like back and turkey so chicken wings I wanted you to taste this cuz that’s this myth that black people make the best chicken and we do chicken is ours but when I ate this chicken for the first time I was flabbergasting because it it’s it’s not that seasoned but still The Taste is really good what you can do you can add some oil and they have like dried thyme over here and dried red pepper over here and add that to the chicken of course there’s garlic sauce there’s hot sauce and this is a tomato sauce but i’ would like for you to start off just pure the chicken just pure chicken yeah so grab one little and also notice that they they cut it right it’s a chicken wing but they make like an incision in it and then the smells also very important it’s it’s really charcoal grilled in here mhm you can smell it yeah very nice and Smoky yeah you see the grill grade also on it oh looks amazing I’m ready okay go ahead let me see your reaction oh yeah oh so soft fals and it’s so simple the smokiness yeah I guess we’ll do the mixing how do you how do you want to do that you want like yeah you add a little oil too much I think you can do spicy right yeah spicy for sure I need spice in my life and then thyme which is also the SEC ingredient of a good jerk chicken oh is it yeah it’s funny I was just uh in Jamaica uh months ago uhhuh and I they didn’t tell me time was a secret ingredient time no no jerk without time taste it again taste it again okay let’s taste this one that spice the oil hell like a wow wow this is amazing this is a paprika well a spicy one dry yeah it’s a mixture of um red peppers and paprika smoked paprika I can’t even believe it it’s crazy m crazy bite and what I also like is all the vegetables are fresh in a lot of restaurants these come from like cans or something mhm they just grate it Big D just it’s all fresh yeah it’s hard now I feel like most people just try to cut Corners save cost and over here we have some of the bread some nice fluffy Pizza this was some oil just like right here that’s the way to do it we’re showing you a different side of amam today onion ketchup like a different style that’s onion sauce I think it might be homemade no and this restaurant is beautiful this lamb it’s like yeah yeah that chandelier it’s like magic it’s huge garlic sauce wow it smells garlic sauce if you have to combine it with a little drip of the sambal oh yeah so now we’re doing some sambal so garlic yes and then a little drizzle a little drizzle a little drizzle mhm like this sambal love my spice that it hits every it definitely hits yeah let’s see let me try it alone separate it’s h but the bread and it’s pickled you can feel that pickle it’s potent yeah I wouldn’t expect wings at a Turkish restaurant you know yeah that’s what I’m saying can’t leave the last one I’ll just take it down you want this sure for you yeah look how beautiful that is love turkey the food is just good food is always good you’re all in right now sorry to interrupt you this is out of nowhere Lam lamus damn like how is it over there with no food in that stomach man I’m good man you’re good I’m really good you said you’re fasting for 24 no uh 48 what yes I’m eating tomorrow with the fried fish yeah with the sauce oh oh my god look how juicy that is it is Juicy this is like their meatballs SL meat patties so flavorful it’s amazing the juiciness it doesn’t even need sauce nothing oh my gosh okay I need one more right what I like it’s not too salty also cuz normally these things are really salty but the balance is really good it’s perfect yeah it’s Smoky a little bit but you get that juice it just pops when you bite into it I think with the thyme is also a good combination mhm I’ll go with the spice I don’t want to put too much but I did I mean dude it’s probably one of the best cast of all time time people say I say that too much you say it’s the best I’m like it’s the best cuz in that moment nothing can beat it you know doti and sua it’s funny I’m trying to communicate with her but she speaks very little Dutch and we’re trying here but she’s from the city of Kaa and over here they have the Turkish mzes and the soups soup chicken soup and play sh play soup baklava bav oh wow that’s the best right there K spom spoom oh wow Turkish Cuisine here in Holland is some of the best in the world turkey Germany Holland Holland Holland ahan amazing suar p p p doing fuu yeah so this is the pounded yum the way we make it like basically in Europe um it’s Su dried pounded yum flour and then you mix it with hot water and then you boil it cuz if you don’t boil it people are going to get stomach ache but when you’re going to go to Nigeria you will see that they will use the fresh yums boil them and then pound them and that is like the original pounded yum yeah amazing basically you are staring it I already got all the lumps out now it’s your turn the way I learned how do it is I get on the floor I know like this and then I go and then you put your feet there and then like like sort of like this yeah ah I’m not good at this you think it’s mashed potatoes but yeah it looks like it it looks like it but it’s not fuu oh yeah we got some spice with that yeah so what is it AA no no this is like this P yum but uh we also have uh vegan African meals got it and that is something that you can’t taste anywhere only here so I have like a vegan vegetable there is like a food center but now unfortunately it’s breaking um as if not I would have showed you how it looks like but then you have like a whole street with different kind of foods like different kitchens in the uh Surinam everybody Under One Roof so we started there and afterwards we were wanted to expand and go a bit bigger so we got a chance to come here beautiful and then we open here and what do we have there this is um basically we call it Soo in the ghanians call it soolo and then the Nigerians call it Zoo drink Zoo yes and we call it actually African IC tea because it’s made out of hibiscus hibiscus flour and African ginger oh wow is it and it’s spicy is it like s yeah you go in kitchen and you see the food being made it opens up appe it’s like yes it’s going to be amazing the 1. Awesome very nice i am living in the Hague and i am from 🇸🇷Surinam❤️
Can you tell me where the Chinees store is in Amsterdam i want to try it.
And the name of the store.i love Chinees food❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯👌👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏🙏 thank you David 🙋🥰

  2. Hi David, I am so happy you visited Amsterdam & Suriname. You got the best stuff from both lands. To bad for
Mark Wiens as he has not tasted any food from Surinamese or Netherlands. I wonder why….👍🏽😇

  3. I am someone from Suriname and I can tell you that it is better to go to Suriname, there is a big difference between Surinamese food and Dutch Surinamese food!! But bless💯🙏🏼

  4. This is really the everyday Netherlands as I experience it every day, you couldn't have shown it better and more honestly and I come from Rotterdam!!😁 thank you!!

  5. I’m a Dutchie born and raised in Amsterdam. I love your video’s, well done! All these different cultures make our city so divers and beautiful. The more red the herring is inside, the better the taste. So the Ijmuider vishandel is one to keep in mind 🙌🏽

  6. Hey David..i like watching your vids.. when you’re in the Netherlands again, pay a visit in a small town called ‘Delfzijl’ its upnorth the country. There you’ll find a gem in the surinamese/javanese food called ‘Warung Sejeh’ and try their ‘moksi meti’ and all the other things you please..and afterwards don’t forget the regions specialty which is called ‘eierbal’. You gonna like that too.. kind regards from the Netherlands. 🫶🏽🫶🏽

  7. Nobody travels to Amsterdam/Netherlands for the food, and we all know that. Its horrible, i lived here for 30 years, all food is exported and thats good but to say yeah man Dutch food is cultura

  8. I hope you had a wonderfull day in my city 😀 you even went to my neighbourhood in south east the place to be. I live 2 min away from the last restaurant you went in unfortunately I didn't see you 🙁

  9. How you know you are in Amsterdam? They make the Herring idiotproof to eat. No "dangling the fish and sliding it down the hatch causing tourists to choke" there. It is actually known in the rest of the country as "Haring op Amsterdamse wijze" (Herring the Amsterdam way). If you are a tourist and want to try the herring but don't really need that photo op, ask for the Amsterdam way regardless where you are in the Netherlands. Fishmongers will understand and cut up your herring for you. This way you can actually enjoy your Herring instead of potentially picking it up from the ground.

As for Fries, I think even most Dutch will agree that Flemish Fries (not "Belgian fries", there is no such thing_ are superior, Dutch version would be either Grandma or Grandpa fires (Oma/Opa Frieten) that comes close to that. Other food things the Flemish are superior at are Chocolate, Waffels (except the stroopwaffel version of course) and Mussels. Probably beer as well although the Dutch also have some awesome great beers.

The Dutch name of Cod is Bakeljauw, in Surinam it is Bakkeljauw or Klipvis, also known as Bacalhau in Portugal and Bacalao in Norway. a Dried version is also known as Stokvis (stickfish)

I was watching and thinking "I know that man, I know that voice" about your host, then I heard his last name and went OF COURSE…. HOWARD!
I see out of the corner of my eye you have a video in my side feed where you go to Utrecht, that is my city so will be viewing that next.
