LISBON Portugal: Best Things to See There
look at that castle way up on the hill it’s so known as St George’s uh castle and we’re going to see that later today hey guys in my last video I had just landed in Lisbon Portugal jet lagged out of my mind after flying 15 hours from Bangkok it was my first visit to Lisbon and I was so excited to share my sites with you today I’m going to continue my tour and there is so much more to see so let’s get [Music] started so behind me is the famous Santa gusta lift it was built in 1902 uh originally ran on a steam engine uh in 1907 they built uh an electric engine for it and it’s been operating every day [Music] since as you can see there’s already a big line forming uh so let’s see if we can go up on a lift for free and not spend the 5 it takes it costs to get up there it’s amazing though from far from a from a distance far away it almost looks like some sort of Time Capsule or something so I’ve never seen anything like it it’s very uh interesting check out the street out it’s right under the Santa gusta lift [Music] cool it’s actually made with pieces of junk but it looks really nice so here I am back uh behind the uh the Santa Justa lift uh I could easily get on it and spend the 5 but you know I could use a walk and it’s not that high up it’s only going up there right so come on I can do it so why don’t you walk with me and there’s some kind of uh an interesting uh church I want to show you up here that uh was damaged in the 1755 earthquake it’s got some interesting things in them so I’ll see you up there [Music] okay guys I’m so happy I didn’t take the lift the walk up here was nothing uh for those of you who don’t like to walk up hill is fine take the lift for me I I like hiking I like walking so it was no problem the woman in my hotel was telling me Oh sorry you don’t want to you know take the hills that they’re going to you know give you a heart attack or something and don’t believe all the all the the stuff because walking Hills is actually really good for and it’s not that difficult and you know we’re talking two three streets going uphill walking uh if that’s tough for you then go ahead and take the livs for me it’s it’s fun I also get to work off my breakfast anyways behind me we have a place called the carel convent it was built in the 14th century but as I told you uh yesterday there was a big earthquake here in 1755 totally knocked this place out the whole roof caved in and for some reason it was uh rebuilt in 1912 except they never put the roof on I don’t know why maybe they put the roof on and it fell in but I think it just uh they never got around to putting the roof on so now it’s a museum you can go in and there’s something inside I want to show you I think you’re going to think it’s pretty cool that’s why I’m going in to see it anyways let’s get a tour of the Carmo combat right behind me got to get in line I think it’s about uh five I might be wrong but I think it’s about 5 to get in but I hope it’ll be worth a tour you can see through the window that the roof is not there you can also see the long line it’s about 9:30 in the morning so still lots of tourists [Music] here so after paying 5 to get in uh you walk into this church with these very elegant walls but uh no roof let’s take a look [Music] so let’s see what else they have this is the back of the church it looks like they’re still doing some Renovations and you can look down here towards the front and you can just see some of the relics of the ancient combat and this is looking from the back to the front it looks like there’s a tomb over [Music] here and I love looking I love looking up and seeing the sky very very nice [Music] is a museum uh right this way and in here there’s something I want to see uh and I’m going to show you in a [Music] minute so what we’re seeing are basically caskets of people that were buried here and uh it doesn’t really tell you who they are at least I can’t tell it’s all written in Portuguese some nice murals up on the wall beautiful casket look at all those carvings on the caskets it as cool as this is we still haven’t seen what I want to show you let’s go in the Next Room should be in there permanent resident so I found it so first of all it’s in a room it’s kind of a library you can see all the pictures of I don’t know who they were beautiful around you see a casket here that looks like something outside out of Egypt a whole casket but here’s what I want to show you they actually have mummies here look at those it’s incredible I hope you hope you can see them this is the mummies of a young girl and her mother found in Peru in a 16th century here’s the Young girl and her mother young girl again they appear to be tied but I think that was how they were buried so the young girl and her mother both tied this is what the condent looked like before uh the earthquake of [Music] 1755 well for me that was really interesting uh the thing I lik the most was looking up and seeing the sky inside the convent especially a blue sky like we’re having today starting to warm up I going to take off this jacket and I also thought the mummies were kind of cool uh I know maybe I’m a sicko but uh you know it’s not every day you get to see mummies inside a Convent uh a lot of interesting uh you know artist Artistry on the barri burial coffins they found and uh there was one room where they had all this pottery and stuff they found when they uh began the excavation in the area uh to rebuild uh but you know it’s it’s uh it’s definitely worth the5 i’ i’ suggest if you’re uh by the uh Santa gusta um lift to just come on up it’s on the up it’s right next to the lift on the upper level and now I’m going to go down I think the ride down for free so let’s go back Santa just a lift and take a free ride down and then there’s some other interesting things I want to show you so let’s do it [Music] well I was told the lift was down the street but actually I walked down the street and I’m at the bottom of the lift so I have no idea how to get to the lift going down and the lift going up is right down here though so I’m already the bottom of the hill so you got to see the lift but we never got to take a ride oh well anyways uh let’s go to the next place which is right down here so to go where we want to go we have to walk by the lift again this time we’re going to walk downstairs right past the lift and on our way to a really interesting place I’ve wanted to see for a while [Music] big crowd for the lift already so Castro Lisbon look at all these Incredible Egg Tarts so many if I didn’t already have four for uh breakfast I’d buy some more they’re delicious now to get where we want to go we actually have to walk through the metro station I’ve never been in the Metro station here for their underground Metro Rail here we are we’re now in chiato which is one of the nicest areas of the of uh Lisbon um I’ve heard if you’re looking for a hotel it’s one of the nice nicest areas of town to be in and uh it does look lovely lots of streets lots of shopping lots of things going on let’s go in the Metro we’re going to cut through and when we get out on the other side we’re going to be someplace I think you’re think is cool let’s go very nice station lot better than the metro in Washington DC that’s for sure and a lot cleaner than the New York subway it’s just gorgeous by the way very clean and it’s very nice guard guard there a lot of guards around so there’s no problems down here I wish uh us could take some uh take a lesson for this but I stopped here because there’s a map of Lisbon uh I’m staying in this area see it’s uh viesa spelled uh or rather it’s pronounced visha and we’re also in chiato these this is a really nice place to stay Rosario is a very nice place to stay and uh well those are the three that I know about anyways we’re in this area we’re going down towards the uh River uh and we’re going to see some things down here and this is the area town you want to live in where you want to when you’re here let’s uh leave the uh Metro and go look for the next [Music] spit that’s the number 12 uh street car that just went by either get on that or the number 28 those are the two street cars if you don’t mind waiting in line they will take you to the most picturesque parts of the city very popular with tourists a lot of time there’s long lines at each station I’m not going to have time to do it but I’m glad I got to show you one so number 28 and 12 that was number 12 okay guys right behind me we are at now this is exciting for me I hope this is exciting for you the oldest library in the world better known as Leia beran and it’s right here in this blue building it has been around for centuries in one form or another but always a uh library and bookstore so let’s go in and check it out this place was built in 1732 and it’s huge inside actually for a place that old they seem to have uh books in all different [Music] languages so found the English section in actually the first room of the bookstore so there’s a pretty good group of books here including a lot of travel guides and information about Lisbon and Portugal it’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be it goes way back and there’s a nice uh kind of place to by pastries coffee in the back the first room is English books and then it goes back has it’s a many languages it’s worth a trip by it’s also cool to just say you’ve been in the oldest library in the world which is now a library and a bookstore so uh check it out again laia Bertrand I’ll have it written uh in the description area below this is the famous Fernando pesoa [Music] statue thank you thank you people come from all over just to be at that with that statue he was a famous playright and he’s probably one of the best known poets in the country uh I don’t know anything about him but uh you’ll see books and things about him all over including the book store we just came from and they’re written in English too if you want to uh know in English if you can only if you can’t read Portuguese anyways you can get your picture taken here with him and also it’s in front of a place called brailer de Chi do which is a great place to get drinks and sit and watch the people it’s very popular with tourists and uh usually have to wait in line just to sit there but it’s very popular okay now we’re going to a restaurant that I’ve heard about that serves really good chicken perryi perryi let’s check it out it’s a bit of a walk up here maybe a block or two [Music] the weather is just gorgeous it’s probably I’m American so I’m talking Fahrenheit but probably 60° fhe 65 so it’s jacket weather but the sun’s out it reminds me a lot of California weather just absolutely gorgeous beautiful day to be out I’m so lucky because this time of year it rains often and it hasn’t rained once since I’ve been here so got another day uh or two of sightseeing ahead of me so I hope the weather stays like this but just check it out beautiful days for strolling and just looking at beautiful Lisbon another Park here lots of these little Parks which they call plazas all over the city with usually a statue of one of their Heroes one of their historical figures and also the uh the architecture is also incredible anyways let’s keep on moving [Music] remember uh if you’re a tourist here the street car is a taker number 12 or 28 28 is the most popular so and these are the tracks it must go down the street from time to time okay the restaurant we’re looking for is called Kasa India which is so funny because they don’t serve India food there they only serve this uh Perry Perry chicken I’m sure I’m pronouncing it wrong that I’ve had before once before uh in Asia and it’s delicious so I’m going to have to ask around where it is I know it’s on the street somewhere I might have passed it but uh we’re going to find it just give me a minute so here we are C India India so let’s go in I’m going to try to get take out no one’s here but it’s supposed to be really popular and very crowded at lunch it’s now quarter of 12 so the lunch hasn’t started yet I’m gonna go in and try to beat everyone cuz I’m just if you saw the breakfast I had I’m can’t even think about eating till two I’m going to try to get take out let’s let’s see if we can it’s an old place and like I said the only ones here are the staff but it look at everyone eats together but do do you want cut sauce yeah have uh can I have it on the side 15 okay 150 okay good good and we like put the grav sauce this is lon sauce yeah sure that on it too yes yeah okay so you don’t mind you’re going to be on YouTube this the YouTube channel hi so uh he’s going to show us how to cook it up he’s going to put some sauce on it and he’s going to give me some is it hot sauce is it kind of spicy sauce okay yeah spicy okay so with a little bit of spicy sauce I’m taking it to go they don’t even open for about 15 minutes so I’m glad I got in here you’re very crowded during the day right many many people during the day right many people open right and for now lunch lunch right but it’s very crowded for lunch right many people yeah so I’m going to take this back and we’ll see how it tastes tonight but like in the west it’s called Peri Peri chicken is it what you call in in uh portug what do you call it just chicken okay so he’s packing it up for me this much chicken was €7 €7 so it’s a pretty good deal and uh can’t wait to get home and eat it but again too stuffed right now to eat have to wait a couple hours okay thank you so so if it it tastes good next time I bring my wife okay thank you another street car full of tourists okay now we’re going to walk back down to the river to see some things I think you’re going to like I don’t think there are many YouTubers here I get a lot of people staring at me or when I told the young man in the uh in the restaurant that I was he was going to be on YouTube he started getting really shy he didn’t know what to do so this street has got a lot of restaurants there’s a pizzeria there there’s a lot of nicer R so down at the other end of the street so I give you the name of the street but I have no idea what it is I don’t see any signs okay we’re going to hang a right and go a few blocks down to the river I’ll see you down there H we have some sort of singing mixed with mime or dance here let’s watch this for a minute it’s on the way down to the river [Music] wish I had a six-pack like that another church I swear they’re almost on every Co corner and they’re all beautiful lots of hills here but if you like to exercise like I do and just walk a lot no problem okay guys now we’re at a place that’s also very famous with tourists and people who just want to see different things we’re a street called pink Street and you ask why do they call pink Street well because it’s pink so why is this place popular with tourists it’s great for the night life it’s got a lot of bars some restaurants but people want to come down here during the day because during the day you can see the street lots of people taking pictures okay uh very it’s you know very cute and very a lot of restaurants look like they’re really cool and bars looks like it’s lot going on down here at night and it goes under this the reason I found this place I was walking up there and I looked down I saw the pink Street I’ve been looking for it for about 15 minutes you can’t miss it right this is obviously an Instagram Place everybody wants her picture taken down here so get mine me and the pig Street walk through this little Bridge oh it’s actually very short we’re right near the river and it just goes down another block uh here you have some more bars it looks like it’s it’s mostly bars a few restaurants and some of these have closed up and then it sort of stops right here so a lot of people come down here during the day for their Instagram shots and uh I like just coming down in the river but I heard this was near the river so otherwise I probably wouldn’t have come down but I’m glad I did it’s kind of cute and uh I have to admit I’ve never never seen a pink Street before let’s walk back then I have another place to take it coming right up so now I’m back at the river uh you can’t see it because the Train’s in the way but right on the other side of the train tracks is the river uh and I’m walking down to show you probably the biggest tourist hot spot in the city as far as getting things to eat very popular tourists uh I just want to see it I won’t get anything there because I hear it’s kind of overpriced but it’s supposed to be really cool uh and also if I was hungry I’d definitely get something there okay but here’s where we want to go you you’ve probably heard of it if you’ve seen any other videos or any uh thing about tourist places in Portugal and Lisbon it is called timeout Market it’s a big sort of Market inside these are outside looks good though have a lot of pastries uh What’s this called marado Zia I don’t know this looks like another Mall H let’s go in here maybe this will maybe this will take us into timeout [Music] Market here we go this place is like I think it’s two stories and what we want to do is get the Second Story to give you a good view tons of places to eat look at all these places to [Music] eat oh I might have to come here tomorrow to eat the food just looks too good I don’t care if I overpay and the reason it’s considered expensive is because it’s a big place for uh tourists and foreigners to hang out so I guess the food’s a little more exotic [Music] here this is uh oh that’s local food which is usually Seafood oh here’s a vegetarian Place uh they serve octopus it’s only part vegetarian uh this is Burgers and Fries look at how many people are sitting in this place wow and next to it there’s a produce place I’m not sure it’s called a marado traditional which just means traditional Market uh I don’t know whether it’s part of timeout Market or not but it’s in the same building so maybe it is look at this place just fruit and vegetabl the it’s huge look at all those fruits it’s better than some of the places in Thailand I’ve been and Thailand’s Got a lot of fruit let’s see what else they [Music] have it looks like it’s just opening up it’s only noon time again more fruit and we got some potatoes there okay some veggies do they have down here oh okay so there you can buy like dishes and stuff and it looks like he had some spices and jars down there okay we’re going to leave this part I’m going to try to get you up to the top of timeout Market cuz the view is incredible just give me a minute okay so they won’t let me go upstairs I seen other pictures taken from upstairs but I guess I get tired of T sneaking up there or maybe I could sneak up there nah better not anyways I’ll try to get a few more shots I’m just holding my camera up in the air but this place is just [Music] massive if I’m back in town hopefully with an we’re definitely going to come here and we’ll taste the food but I don’t think you have to guess it’s very popular because the food’s great here okay guys so we basically covered most of the city uh looking at things I think you’ll like to see there’s just so much to see here but uh We’ve covered a lot and tomorrow I’ll be leaving for another city up north and I want you to uh I I hope you’ll like it as much as I know I’m going to like it but before we get to that um which we’ll talk about tomorrow when I leave um I’m pretty much done showing you everything I want to show you except for one thing yesterday okay we got to cross here just a second trying to cross a very busy road another street car number 18 so by the way this a train station here right along the river you see the river down there so okay I’m going to go this way so yesterday you might remember we went up to see the castle it’s called Uh St George’s Castle we saw the outside of it and I told you the reason we weren’t going to go in is first of all long lines and second of all uh most of the Castle’s been renovated and rebuilt since the earthquake 1755 and I mean it’s been re most of it was rebuilt like you know in the last 100 years so I was not excited about seeing it and also didn’t have that much time to go in there and spend half a day in there looking and everything it’s a big place but we saw from the outside the pl the thing I really wanted to see was they have this beautiful view of the city right outside the castle and they want you to pay for tickets for the castle and wait in line for an hour just to see it so I didn’t want to do that but I heard about this place it’s a Terrace just below the castle on the hill and it’s called called uh Mira Duro uh it’s called Mira Dura de Santa Museum and it’s a just a little Terrace uh with music and great view the exact same view you can get walking up to the castle so it’s free and if you’re not into spending a long time in the castle and don’t want to wait in lines and you want to see the view this is the place to see now one thing happened I went there I found it I took some videos and about halfway through my videos um my battery stopped and I didn’t know it so I kept on taking videos my battery was out and I was basically just taking I thought I was taking videos but nothing was being recorded so I’m going to hike all the way up there today it’s early afternoon uh I could go back and you know sit in my hotel room and work on uh you know work on editing videos and do some of the other work I need to do but I wouldn’t be getting this video out showing you the beautiful view of the River from up on the hill so I’m going to hike back there it’ll be a good little workout and uh I just want you to see the view because it is Splendid and uh then I’ll just go back to the hotel from there so it’s about a 20 minute walk and it’s up some Hill so I get a good workout and looking forward forward to going looking forward to showing you the the uh The View and this is a part I’m walking through this sort of grassy Park I’ve never been to before uh before I head up the hills and again we’re right on the Waterway which they call River and you get a nice little grassy null here which is kind of cool and wle in the grass and give you one last shot of the river before we get up to the The View that I want to show you so I’m going to turn the camera off for about 20 minutes this time I’m going to save the battery to show you the view and I think you’re going to like it so we’ll close out our Lisbon video with The View when we get up there and then tomorrow morning when you wake up rather tomorrow morning when I wake up I’m going to share with you where I’m going to next and and uh let’s go see this view on the hill and then I’ll see you tomorrow [Music] [Music]
Lisbon Portugal: Best things to see there. Recently, I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Portugal, a country I’d been wanting to visit for years! Ann had stay in Thailand for family reasons, so it was up to me to explore this beautiful country on my own. It would also be my first solo vlogging trip. Lisbon was everything I’d hoped for; a place to take long walks and see some of the history behind the oldest city in western Europe. It’s also a place to enjoy great food and to meet friendly people! I was only in Lisbon for 48 hrs so I had to move fast to see everything I wanted to.
