If you are traveling through Bratislava, St. Martin’s Cathedral is definitely a historic church that should be visited.
St. Martin’s Cathedral is located below the Bratislava Castle on the western border of Bratislava Old Town.
It is a Gothic three-nave church is the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava. It is known for being the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830. It was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church from 1221. The construction of the church began at the beginning of the 14th century. Ludwig van Beethoven performed his work Missa solemnis for the first time here in 1835.
The cathedral’s tower is 85 meters high and is decorated with a gilded replica of St. Stephen’s crown (a copy of the Hungarian royal crown). It weighs 150 kgs and is more than 1.5 meters tall. The church originally had six bells, but only the largest and oldest one has remained preserved. The bell is called Wederin and weighs approximately 2.5 tons. It is one of the most valuable bells in Europe.
