Aix-en-Provence Tourist Office presents Aix-en-Provence region Vineyard Moment The winemaking bastides of the Aix-en-Provence region Many wine estates in Provence are centred around buildings known as ‘bastides’. These prestigious residences flourished in rural areas between the 16th and 18th centuries. They were the summer residences of the aristocracy and upper classes seeking fresh air. How do you recognise a Provençal bastide? The house is rectangular and has a four-sided roof with terracotta tiles. It is 3 storeys high with outside walls rendered in ochre, as visible stones were a sign of poverty at the time they were built. They have a symmetrical façade designed around a central front door, with steps leading up to it. There is always an odd number of windows. Count them and see! A triangular pediment at the top highlights the prestige of the house. Inside the rooms are spacious with ceilings around 9 feet high. The elegant garden swith trees, French style or with box hedges, often feature statues or a fountain as the finishing touch. The refined, harmonious style was an ostentatious display of wealth. And these charming buildings naturally became the symbol of the wine estate. Which is why winemakers feature them on the labels of their best wines.
