How to have a perfect day on Italy’s Amalfi Coast… without the crowds | Times Travel
[Music] people hear the words a mouthy coast and assume the towns along the wat’s edge are where they need to be but wouldn’t you rather be somewhere like this so let me share one simple trick with you to really enjoy a malfie you’ve got to leave the Coast Road behind and explore the whole landscape from top to bottom come with me and I’ll show you how to leave the crowds behind and enjoy a mf’s b I’m starting at the top and working my way down to the Sea and if you want to follow me don’t whatever you do try sightseeing over the steering wheel of your high car go for a walk instead of course we’re not talking about any old Walk This is the path of the Gods and it follows an old mule track between aera and noell for about 5 miles as you can see the views alone make every bead of sweat worthwhile the route wasn’t restored until the end of the 1990s but since then it has become the UI Coast’s most popular hike like everything here it’s best avoided in July and August but if you pick your moment in spring or late summer you’re going to feel a little bit Godly like yourself I think it’s time for a bite to eat I’m staying up high for lunch with a visit to Mama Agata in ravello run by Kiara Lima it’s a cookery school with another view to die for and a love of strong clear flavors Kiara what are we going to cook today well we are going to do a couple of very very traditional recipes the first one we’re going to make a traditional sauce but before we start cooking I have to give give you something here you are Fant without an apron you cannot cook thank you Mama sauce very simple I’m going to use two gloves of garlic just peeled I don’t chop after that I have the ingredients inside only then I turn on the flame the oil is speaking it’s saying hello I’m listening to you oil the oil is ready to receive the tomato sauce so now we this your one of 3,000 jar Tomatoes here you are and cover on I always cover because I don’t want vitamin and flavor go wasted in the air we’re moving now to the meatbats I’m going to pour milk on the bread is the bread sty just very old bread very old very you know two three days old I have 50% beef and 50% pork but see that I have a hole in the middle because I have to measure the bread put them in a bowl and now in the best instrument so twist and yeah take a little bit of milk yeah ah and I put inside and then hands like a cup and the other one rolling I’m not stressing the meat the meat is not stressed it’s very relaxed this like a cup and the other one the rolls and here you are and let’s move on oh there we go right let’s go look at that bra Sean teamwork teamwork I’ll come and work for you in your kitchen oh you’re very that would be my honor okay here is a sacred moment coming up M oh the sauce is so good are they okay are they okay wow they are delicious thank you I love H thank you wonderful thank you for sharing thank you for for coming to and thank you for giving me the opportunity to share these with people so if I’m going to eat one thing other than Meatballs what should I eat here on the coast now you had meatballs now you have to go with pasta a nice seafood or a nice spaghetti great thank you just one more no I’m [Music] more so Kiara has given me some great tips about what to eat while I’m here on the Amalfi Coast as to where I’d say the Golden Rule is do a little research before you go out the internet is full of good advice you will avoid the touristy traps if you follow it right I’m [Music] off so we’ve been up high now it’s time to get out onto the water you can hire and Skipper your own small boat from a town like Positano I’ve gone for the low stress option I’m chartering something a little larger from a company called Positano boats so here I am uh with jenard and he is going to take us out to legali islands and then jardo can you take us somewhere really secret yeah sure I go on this side I have the the secret spot for you yeah let’s go [Music] ano so here we are at the legali islands which are about 4 miles offshore from Positano over there and Legend has it that this is where the sirens used to hang out you know the crazy strange creatures who tried to sing adus off his ship during the Odyssey and I think if you’re going to come here you really do have to answer their siren Call because it’s when you’re out on the water that Positano and the whole of the ufi coast are at their most beautiful oh that’s fresh the sirens are calling come and get me all right then one last J you will by now have noticed that much of this extraordinary Coast is inaccessible from the road woo it’s easy for gardo to take me somewhere lovely in his boat oh that’s nice [Music] most boat trips finish by 5:00 p.m. which should give you just enough time to get ready for an apparao before dinner note that I am not going to drink an apparo Spritz that’s for the Northerners I’m not sure what to drink though so I’ve come to talk to Andrea at the monastero Santa Doza Hotel about what you drink in the evenings on the amaly coast and Andrea I hear you have very good wine here we have a really beautiful wine from Marisa Kumo which is made 1 km far from here the grapes grow on this beautiful Hill or if you like also some s cocktail from our list sounds interesting I can make you taste our monaster Royale which is made with the urban flowers from our garden basically so it’s very refreshing and sumary it’s a bit rude of me but can I have both of course you can I start with drink and then we move on wine okay brilliant thank you very much you’re [Music] welcome well this is not a bad way to end a day on the Amalfi Coast so last thing which do I prefer [Music] very nice wine I’ve got a good feeling about this [Music] cocktail Sal
The Amalfi coast is one of the prettiest parts of Italy — and therefore one of the most popular. In high season, the towns and villages strung along the winding coast are heaving. There are ways to find the uncrowded Amalfi, though: our expert, Sean Newsom, has some tips.
