I really felt like I got to experience authentic Colombian culture during a free graffiti tour of Comuna 13 in Medellin, Colombia. The tour was led by a lovely trio locals who actually live in the barrio and even hosted a dance party for us at the end. Of course you should tip at the end of the tour. I recommend giving a tip of 10,000 – 15,000 COP (about $3.50 – $5.00 USD) at the end of your tour.

We booked the tour online and had to take the Metro train and met our guides at San Javier station and then took a small bus up some steep hills to the start of the street art and the neighborhood (barrio) itself. It’s hard to believe that this beautiful, thriving city was the scene of Pablo Escobar and the infamous Medellin Cartel just a few years ago.

We felt totally welcome and safe during our tour which included a dance party at the end where we learned some salsa, merengue and reggaeton dance steps.

My friends and I spent some time explored El Estadio, the international soccer (fútbol) stadium in downtown Medellin first before the tour. I’m so grateful for being able to spend so much time in this city!
