Skyville, Dawson, WOHA, Skygardens / Walk 8 / Queenstown MRT Station to Skyville @ Dawson / Singapore / 24 December 2018, Monday

Queenstown is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. And it’s funny that perhaps one of the oldest structures (along with Queenstown Library, Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market and Alexandra Hospital that have been officially conserved) will be the Queenstown MRT station that was built in 1988. It is one of 2 MRT stations that are closest to my home, and I use it a lot. It is also the station that is closest to the old Stirling Road Campus of Temasek Polytechnic where I had the opportunity to experience for a year and a half between 1994 and 1995. It is a place means a lot to me, so I’ve decided to film a walk from it to a building that is one of the newest in this rejuvenating estate, the Skyville @ Dawson, which is superbly designed by WOHA. I am a big fan of their buildings. The skygarden on the 47th floor of this building is a wonderful way of making a public space, providing Singaporeans with a perspective of their city that is both generous, spectacular and inclusive (you don’t have to pay to enter). I visit this skygarden frequently whenever I need a space to look at the city. I’ve often told my friends that this space is the anti-thesis of Marina Bay Sands as it provides a view of the heartlands of Singapore, rather than the tired and cliched landscape of the unsustainable glass buildings in the CBD. If you ever need a place to see Singapore, this is a great place to do so.
