[Music] welcome to mon Sam Melle one of France’s most iconic and breathtaking landmarks located in norand demo s Michelle is a small rocky island with a rich history dating back to the 8th Century surrounded by its Bay which boasts one of the greatest tital ranges in the world access to the mon s Michelle is limited to a few options you can’t park at the mon s Michelle a car park with 4,000 parking spaces is provided on the mainland over a mile from the mount when you park your car go toward WS tourist information center just outside the tourist information center you’ll find the passur shuttle bus to take you to the m Sam Melle it’s free and runs without interruption from 7:30 a.m. to midnight the journey takes about 12 minutes and is easy to use for people with mobility issues if you decide to walk it should take approximately 40 to 50 minutes to reach the mount personally I would save this time and energy to discover and walk around Mount itself the entrance to the village is free of charge you only have to pay to enter Mona Michelle abby1 13 this is the entrance to the ABY prepare to climb 350 stairs [Music] oh my gosh welcome to the Benedictine ABI of monsan Michelle a Marvel of medieval architecture and a beacon of spiritual history in Normandy France The Story begins in the 8th Century Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared to orbert the bishop of avanes instructing him to build a church on this Rocky island and so in 966 the first stones of what would become the Benedictine Abbey were laid the aby’s architecture is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic Styles reflecting its centuries long development oh look at that now we are climbing the stairs known as Grand dger up to the South gotier Terrace there is a church on the right and Abby buildings on the left linked by suspended passageway these buildings put up between the 14th and 16th centuries were the formal residents of the Abbotts in the 10 Century the benedictines settled in the Abbey while a village grew up below its walls by the 14th century it extended as far as the foot of the rock we reached the West Terrace that consist of original Paris of the ABY church and the Nave destroyed in 18th century following a fire the classical facade was rebuilt in 178 8 from here you have a general view over the bay in addition Terrace offers a unique view of the neogothic Spire of the church Tower built in 1897 with the glided copper statue of St Michael on the top let’s go inside Abby church that has been built in the early Decades of the Year 1000 it was constructed on the top of the Rock 80 m above sea level on a platform 80 M long the Nave has an elevation of three levels arches Galleries and Tall Windows the Benedictine monks lived a life of strict religious devotion here following the rule of St Benedict which emphasized prayer work and communal living the Abby became a center of learning and culture during this time [Music] our tour continued Through The Cloister which provided communication between the various buildings the cloy is located at the top of a building known as the mer built at the beginning of the 13th century the galleries of the cler have been constructed to make them light in weight a double row of small columns slightly out of line creates Ever Changing View new now we are looking at refectory where the monks had their meals in silence whilst one of them gave reading from the pulpit on the South Wall the side walls of this room have narrow Windows invisible from the entrance [Music] the stairway takes us to the guest Hall which is exactly under the refectory this room was designed for receiving royalty and nobility over the centuries mosam Michelle became a major pilgrimage destination and an important religious and Cultural Center during the medieval period an unconquerable stronghold during the 100 Years War mon Michelle is also an example of military architecture its defensive walls and fortifications resisted all the English attacks and as a result the mount became a symbol of national identity our tour continue by entering the great pillared Crypt this Crypt was built in the mid-5th century to support the gothic chancel of the Abbey [Music] [Applause] we then entered the St Martin Crypt which was built after year 1000 to serve as a foundation for the South Arm of the transcept of the Abbey this Crypt has a Vault with an impressive 9 M [Music] span from the St Martin Crypt a small passage takes us to the enormous wheel that occupies the former Monk’s ocer osher is a building or vault in which humans bones exume from a churchard are preserved this wheel was installed around 1820 in order to hoist Provisions to the prisoners held in the Abbey when it was turned into a prison it is a replica of the pulce used for hoisting Building Materials in the Middle Ages [Music] [Music] next is the saint atan Chapel this Chapel is situated between the infy which collapsed in the early 19th century and the monks oi this was the Chapel of the Dead it was in this Chapel that the monks would mourn their friends and colleagues who passed away [Music] after taking the north south stairs that run below West Terrace we reached the covered walk a long room with double Nave this room was used by monks in the winter when the weather was too bad to use the cloy to get some fresh air the benedictines admired The Works of Aristotle who wrote that a mind can be healthy only when the body is healthy next is the kns hall also called the scriptorium built to hold up the CL this was the work and study room of the monks the huge chimneys on the side gave an idea of the big fires lit and the heat reflecting in the room by the inclined walls sometimes this room was also used when a king or very important member of the nightly Society of St Michael was coming on pilgrimage to The Abbey then this room was converted into room where they stayed and [Music] live classified as historic monument in 1874 it underwent major restoration work since then work has gone on regularly all over the site months Michelle has been listed as a word heritage site by UNESCO since [Music] 1979 during the occupation of France in World War II German soldiers occupied monan Michelle where they used St Ober church as a lookout post the island was a major attraction for German tourists and Soldiers with around 325,000 German tourists from July 18th 1940 to the end of the occupation of France mam Melle is renowned for its dramatic title changes the difference between high and low tide can be as much as 46 ft transforming the island from a solitary Fortress to a peninsula a new bridge connects the island to the mainland allowing easier access while preserving the natural tidal [Music]
