I Ate At The World’s Best Buffet
hey everybody I’m David G and today we’re going to check out the best all-you-can-eat buffet in the world all-you-can-eat buffets might bring up a mental image of slobbering kids treating food like it’s their personal finger-painting canvas a retired history teacher engaging in a heated battle with his 50th plate of kung pao chicken or just the occasional lost-looking soul wondering how exactly they ended up there but this Buffet will be offering none of that at least I really hope not! Les Grands Buffets in Narbonne, France has supposedly reinvented the tradition of gorging oneself with copious amounts of food by upping the quality adding some class and a dress code and well making it French so the second I heard about it I knew I had to see and taste for myself the only problem is that reservations are usually booked up as much as 8 months out but I really just had to try it so after a few days of constantly refreshing the buffet’s booking site I found a table open for the lunch eating just a few days before plus the seating was for right at noon when they open up meaning I will be able to sit and eat for up to 4 and 1/2 hours that is what I’m talking about! but first I’ve got to get there so let’s hop on a plane and see if this buffet is really worth flying to and then I’ve got to drive a little and take a few trains too And voila as it turns out Narbonne is a pretty nice smaller city there’s a lot to see and do here and luckily for my day here the sun was out and the sky was blue I found a cozy apartment to stay in and it only cost me about €60 a night and the location was great too Narbonne is full of pretty buildings a nice canal and let’s see well there’s a market here that’s got to be worth checking out a baguette is always nice and another thing is that Narbonne is small enough that you can easily take a walk outside of the city so if you need to walk off all that food you ate of the buffet then this is the perfect place to do it but all right okay you want the world’s best buffet so I’m going to give it to you let’s get going! the buffet is a relatively short walk away from the city center and it’s strangely located in the same building as a pretty massive recreation complex so if you want to go bowling or to the pub or just take a swim after dining you can and I thought it was kind of cool how the entrance takes you into a glass pyramid well I’ve made it over here to the Grand Buffet but it is quite a windy day today yesterday was pretty good weather but today’s not so much so I’m going to do most of my talking indoors so let’s go ahead and head in I am a bit early but let’s see if they won’t let me take a little bit of a look around so I’ve made it inside and there’s already a huge line of people waiting and I’m here at it’s about 11:30 so I’m standing in the 12:00 p.m. line but you can see the people are already here for the 12:15 entry so actually it’s probably a good idea to get here a little bit early but just a little bit of background this place opened in 1989 and since then they’ve been serving up food and it’s in this kind of recreation center and you just would never know it’s here but it is here so I’m looking forward to checking out caviar, lobster, foie gras, and a bunch of other cool stuff and I’ve got over 4 hours to do it so you know we’re going to be eating a lot of food and the line has just begun to move so let’s go check it out fully sanitized you can see that the price is 57.90 (euros) like any other restaurant that doesn’t include drinks but for what we’re about to get that’s a pretty amazing deal it’s about $60 US dollars they’ve actually got a scale here for before you eat and after you eat I guess to see how much you ate I’m wearing this backpack so I guess the weight’s not exactly accurate but I’ll give it a try looks fun old I broke it I can already see the amazing desserts here for the first time? yes this is the plan for the buffet specialty menu okay thanks so much so I brought my backpack with me cuz I’m traveling of course this isn’t the only place I’ve been going on this trip but if you do bring a backpack a suitcase keep in mind that this is the amount of space you get they didn’t mention any kind of coat check so they don’t mind you being here with it but you do need to find space for it so being such a huge and high quality buffet I’m coming in here with my philosophy on eating and that means that I’m going to start with vegetables and a salad but hear me out everyone knows that eating bread before you eat is a bad idea just cuz it’s going to fill you up and then you won’t actually be able to eat the good stuff but eating salad might actually make you even fit more food in your stomach so I’m going to try it out like that so I’m going to do salad first then seafood then meat and then everything else basically and when I entered the nice waiter handed out a map that everybody gets when they come here so before we get to eating let’s take a tour around and see what they’ve got on the buffet today there’s the seafood section which is really impressive they have a great assortment of oysters and then of course the massive bowl of caviar stands out and there are many many different seafood dishes on offer I don’t know if it’s the fog machine they’ve got going but these crabs and lobsters are really calling my name I mean that Lobster Tower is just a beauty I’d be fine just eating seafood today looking at this but the seafood is just a tiny part of the buffet and then in the same room as the seafood you’ll find the biggest cheese selection of any restaurant in the entire world you definitely smell it before you see it and we’ll be tasting dozens of them later in this video then there’s a table in the middle of the room that features fresh organic vegetables on one side and an impressive selection of nine foie gras on the other and then as you move on to the next room there’s a long display of sausages and other preserved meats and all of that leads up to a round cutting table that features nine different legs of ham and the cutting table does a nice job of leading you into the next room among tons of other dishes that are prepared on the spot in this room you can get the traditional dish of duck in its own blood later we’ll find out if it’s any better than it sounds at this giant rotisserie counter you’re limited to one order at a time but it’s still all you can eat and then on the other side of the room there’s a bunch of traditional dishes on hot plates that don’t seem to fit anywhere else and since you asked yes there are frog legs but the craziness just kind of continues and takes you to a long display of 50 homemade desserts that all surround a stunning chocolate fountain plus there’s also a crepe station I might be skipping most of the bread products so crepes are probably also off of the list for this one but let’s see how much I can eat and the gelato looks super impressive okay that’s still a few hours to go here so yeah I’m really looking forward to eating here I’m just waiting for the waiter to come take our drink order so then we’ll be allowed to actually get up and go eat my name is Frédéric i will be your maitre d’hotel today Sebastian will take care of your table for for the lunch he will help you for the wines also okay for the wines each bottle is on the table at the same price as the producer if at the end of your meal you want a box of six bottles to take away the one you had on the table will be offered the starter will close at 3:00 main courses will close at half past 3 uh cheeses Desserts and Drinks we close at 4 and a quarter and the restaurant is closing at 4 and a half okay perfect enjoy your meal with us it’s a really big menu so to start I’m keeping it super simple I’m just doing this salad probably don’t want to know much about that that’s going to be the first thing I eat second thing is these oyseters I did grab one piece of jamon de Bayonne or jambon de Bayonne kind of the French version of Spanish ham I’ve always really liked it so just going to eat one and look at how cute this carrot is I tried one with vinegar one with lemon for me lemon’s just a little more balanced I totally slipped up and brought just a fork and didn’t get the uh little poker thing so I have to go back and get one and now we’ve got plate number two so got half a crab there half a lobster razor clam little bit of snow crab you already know what that is that’s the caviar right there caviar how’s that? it’s really fishy wonder why Razor clam hello pretty much all the seafood is just boiled in salt water sorry Americans no Old Bay I’m not sure if they eat these with their hands in France but I’m from the US so but I’m just not sure about this French tourteau crab it’s a whole lot of work to get open without a cracker so I’ll come back to it just the fact that they have snow crab here alone would be a reason to come that’s my kind of crab right there this h ah perfect thank you so much okay oh and they do use crackers in France cool there we go that’s the tourteaui crab ladies and gentlemen and here I was just trying to be polite thinking that they do things differently in France but now it’s Lobster time I was told to dip it in aioli I don’t know what more I can do to this crab so if you’re eating halal or kosher a lot of this buffet is not going to be for you same if you’re vegan or vegetarian or anything doesn’t mean don’t come can still come but I don’t know if it’s worth 57 euros or not really nice Lookout though they give you some wet napkins if they see you eating seafood so I mean this is uh I wrecked that plate and I’m about to do another so I’m actually still on the seafood cuz it was so good got this lobster here I just had to get another half of a tail and I mean I know this is frozen and it’s from Alaska or whatever but I really like it and you know I’ve got 3 and 1 half hours left so going to eat a lot of seafood I guess people actually stay here for the whole time when they come I just love these things but all right we’ve seen most of what they have to offer when it comes to Seafood so let’s go see what they’ve got for foie gras just a little of the au poivre so after a lot of seafood now it’s time to move on to a little bit of foie gras I just took four of them cuz you actually have to wait in two different lines and there’s an insane amount of people here so talking about at least a 15-minute wait but one of them is crème brûlée foie gras so I’m really interested to try that let’s see how it tastes crème brûlée foie gras it’s definitely different than your typical savory foie gras and it’s got this foamy element to it and the other foie gras were fine too but nothing to write home about so I think I’m going to head back to the buffet and see what kind of meat I can get it’s now 2:00 p.m. which means I’ve been here for 2 hours eating I’m still not full at all and that’s a good thing so I’ve got four new dishes on my table now this is the Canard au Sangre or duck in its own blood this place is kind of known for that although it’s from Rouen this is escargot and this one’s a good old filet mignon and then this fourth plate’s got suckling pig some beef and some roast lamb so basically it’s meat time but I got some escargo too so let’s try the duck first mhm this duck is really good edible flowers are nice touch a little bit of a sour taste not very salty at all there’s kind of a mix of this blood and wine flavor together I really like this one it’s one of my favorites so far some meats That’s a baby pig over here, suckling pig it’s got those big chunks of salt I don’t love I don’t love that but the flavor is really good a leg of lamb the lamb’s favorite of the three some beef filet mignon that’s always good classic green beans these beans are kind of sweet and these escargot like if there’s any dish that’s classic French it’s escargot you can’t go without having escar-GO snail [Music] it’s around 3:00 p.m. which means it’s cheese time start with a little bit of tete de moine so far my favorite cheese here is actually a soft cheese this langres fermier that one’s really tasty this thousand-day gouda is really interesting it’s got a bit of that crystal umami thing going but it also you know kind of the old socks thing going how about Napoleon cheese? looks like sweaty Napoleon cheese the Napoleon creamy yet mild, Napoleon Rondin that’s just like drinking milk that cheese and then the French version of gouda Oh I shouldn’t say that mimolette the mimolette is better than the gouda look at how orange that cheese is mimolette Saint Nectaire that’s a proper cheese how about Laguiole Laguiole it’s got a little bit of a vinegar or sour kick to it not sure I like that cheese mushroom Hmm buttery that’s from here and the 30 month aged comte oh that’s sweet I’m incredibly thankful that they have a little paper label for each cheese cuz I would never be able to remember all of these Tomme de Lozere There’s almost no salt in that cheese All of the cheeses surprise were good but I do really like this langre fermier soft cheese for once it’s a little bit bitter a little bit nutty I also almost missed this truffle brie there’s a lot of truffles in there but I decided to do a little bit of asking around to see what really the best thing at this Buffet is and it turns out turns out that a lot of people think it’s this rabbit frog legs tastes like chicken some kind of beef stew saffron muscle muscle in the saffron tastes like saffron smells like wine [Applause] happy birthday [Music] I’ve got dessert in front of me which unfortunately means that this experience is coming to an end but I’m not there yet so I’m going to eat a ton of desserts right now First I got a canele that’s done right there’s also ice cream on my plate so I better eat that pretty fast a lot of the ice cream they’re serving didn’t look like that great but the violet ice cream for some reason looks really good and it is really good Coffee time My time here is coming to an end I’m just going to eat a little bit of fruit and then that’s it and this Buffet really lives up to all the reputation that it has it was amazing it’s definitely the best buffet I’ve ever eaten at and I would totally recommend that you come too if you can even find a reservation thanks so much for watching make sure to give it a like and stay tuned for more I’ll see you all in the next video merci beaucoup Les Grands Buffets oh yeah and if you do get hungry afterward there’s always macdo down the street

Wow David…I never knew such a place existed! I’m assuming you speak French? Was it intimidating to have so much variety to choose from? What a great and unique experience it must have been! Thanks for sharing!❤
