The Unique Curved Elevator at Hannover New Town Hall. A Fascinating Experience!
hello guys from Hanover the capital of lower Saxony in Germany uh it’s a beautiful day and this morning I am taking a trip through the city down that kind of way towards the new town hall and now some people ask me you when you get to where you going do you see much of the area or the place the city whatever and yeah sometimes I do and um the new town hall here in Hanover has got a really unique elevator believe it or not not it’s the only one in the world that kind of goes up um on a bit of a a curved incline and it’s inside the Dome so yeah I’m kind of looking forward to this really it’s an odd one we’re going to head down there and uh see what it’s like and I speak to you again on the way I’d never been to Handover before and the first quandry I had when editing this video was whether to spell it with two n’s or one then I’m going to use two as I believe that’s the German spelling and that’s how the local tourist board spell it too and so like I said Hanover is the capital of lower Saxony with a population of just over half a million it is the 13th largest city in Germany if you’re arriving here by train hanov New Town Hall is about a 1 mile walkway through the city and quite a bit of it is pedestrian I as you can see here the first impressions for me were yeah really nice you know what it makes such a difference being able to walk safely through the streets without the constant noise or potential Interruption of traffic I tell you what my sense of direction these days is just like awful uh it’s about 9:00 in the morning um now the elevator opens at 9:30 I think so hopefully I can get there uh and be one of the first to ride it or being well anyway but there some fantastic buildings right look at this pretty impressive in and the new town hall is supposed to be really impressive and incidentally it is the only Town Hall in the whole of Germany I believe that has a doed roof so yeah we’re not far away from it now it’s just head of the side of this build and we’ll hopefully we’ll see it a little bit in a little bit more clarity now you may have noticed that we’re following a red line on the pavement and that is like one of these sort of tourist information things that they’ve done theyve put a line around the the city’s major attractions and you just walk follow it Follow The Line walk along it it disappears is over there I’m underneath that van and look at that and it takes you around all the sides and there there was something similar in Boston actually I remember doing doing one in Boston and and that was really good and it’s free of course so you just take your time and you follow it around right where am I [Applause] now I don’t speak German um I certainly can’t translate that but the very mention of 1943 would say to me that this church was partially destroyed by bombing Mage in the second world war let me know what it says if you can translate it for me I’d be interested to know yeah I was able to wander inside where a solitary cross now stands at the far end it was completely destroyed by aerial bombing M that began on the 8th of October 1943 that ultimately wiped out 90% of the city center and killed 6,782 people mainly civilians in the process Stark reminded of the horrors of War isn’t it that that will be further Illustrated when we go inside the new town hall in a short while right then guys we are we are back on the red line and yeah this is leading us to the new town hall and I think you will agree that is pretty impressive isn’t it yeah I can’t wait to get up there looks like we we’re able to cross so let’s go they’re back with the traffic now unfortunately but yeah the new town hall is an impressive sight on the other side of the road you can clearly see the doed roof of the central tower from here and we will actually end up above that looking out from the circular balcony you can just make out at the top and I tell you what the views from there are pretty impressive yes we just going to get over the road now we’ll get inside and uh see what the situation is hopefully it’s open uh pay the money and I’ll let you know how much is in bit and then yeah we’ll get on up there okay well I guess we go and ask somebody we’ll have a little look inside yeah I was surprised really that in this day and age I could just walk up to the front door and wander into what was a fantastic lobby area I me look at the walls and ceiling here mightily impressive and yeah I just asked the guy at the ticket desk and he was like well you know we’re going to be open in a few minutes so just go and have a bit of a Wonder ride yeah so I did and I’m walking into the central Hall I guess you could call and yeah what an amazing area this was it felt absolutely massive inside wow I tell you what it’s pretty impressive this place isn’t it what a town hall uh I’m 10 minutes early um so I just spoke to the chap there who sells the tickets and he said yeah just have a look around for um 10 minutes and uh and go back and uh yeah and I read somewhere that the town hall has like four um four models of the city and um yeah you can see them here um okay so this one is 1945 so just um well I’m assuming that’s just after the second world war because look at the amount of Devastation there absolutely frightening isn’t it that and obviously um a lot of work was done after the war to to rebuild the city now I wonder yeah there are other models so if we look at this one over here this is presumably from later date there we go so yeah yeah well pretty much present day then I I would assume the main railway station there and and the tower can’t remember what that’s Co now would mind going up there there you go so yeah 1939 the start of the second world war obviously uh a lot more intact wasn’t it just terrible and that’s just brings home to you um the devastation that war can cause look at this in 1689 the lot smaller place isn’t it no less attractive though I wonder if any of the old city walls still exist right so we’re off you can take um a conventional elevator or you can take the stairs the stairs are more interesting aren’t they come on when I went back to the ticket C I was surprised to see that instead of loads of tourists excitedly waiting for it to to open there was no one that was brilliant I thought so I paid my money 44 it cost me and here I was making my way up to the second floor I paused for a minute just to take in the views once more they really were impressive weren’t they and then after getting slightly lost I followed signs for the third floor which eventually took me outside and across a walkway to the foot of the central Dome and the elevator itself I think this is the way how about a bit of a typ is cuz I didn’t understand how the signage worked and we’re outside and then we got to go in inside again to this gentleman at the top of the stairs who’s going to hopefully take us up up to the top somewhere up there I think open wow it’s okay now that’s just um door yeah wow and that’s as close as we are to the wall yeah done right thank you guys look at that so you can see the curve as we go up and then the floor is actually on a slight angle when when it’s at the bottom it’s at an angle now when we go around the curve you can see here normal level up and then you can see by the Trap deck can you see it’s a little bit kind of um well the technical term it’s probably not wibbly wobbly but you get to know what I mean as we get closer to the top it’s fascinating isn’t it look at the angles in the left and now we can see right down there beneath us and then there’s a sign here telling you how far we’ve climbed it’s not that far to the top as supp it’s just coming up to we coming up to the top now and it’s what it’s 41 41 42 M it looks like it’s leaning over but the floor’s actually quite level uh let’s go out and see what we can find I feel quite um feel quite lucky and privileged actually because I’m I’m the first person of the day I think and so there’s nobody else here and if I oh I can feel the wind now so if I climb this spiral staircase that’s nice and cool actually so I initially made my way onto the balcony one floor down from the very top of the tower there are better unrestricted views from here as you will see in a moment and looking over the balcony wall you can see the Dome we’ve just traveled inside and the many other Roes and towers of the new town hall we’re around 320 ft or 97 m above the ground at this point and on a clear day you can see the hearts mountains if you know where to look I’ve been there before actually up to the brocken and yeah there’s some fantastic steam Railways in that part of the world too now looking to what I guess is the view of the town Hall you have the mash Park in the foreground and the more extensive Parklands and lakes of the mash sea beyond that and to the right of that is the hin Von Heiden Arena which is home to Bundesliga side Hanover 96 and that has a capacity of just under 50,000 then the large building overlooking the lake here is the Landes Museum where you will find your art and history and then we’re back looking North again across the city center where you can look back on the market church we saw earlier the old to Center and beyond that the VW Tower which tells you pretty much where the railway station is there is loads more to see here and lots more places that I could attempt to pronounce badly uh but it was time to make my way right to the top of the tower now where after taking in the views for a final time I’ll just pause for a minute to sum up the experience um yeah I’ve never been to Hanover before but this is this is travel isn’t it’s all about exploring new places and find out what’s what’s around who would have thought that this elevator I’ve just traveled on is the only one of its kind in the world but I’m going to explore a little bit more of the city so I hope you enjoyed that um please leave me a like comment below if you’ve tried it um or if you haven’t or if you’d like to that would be really useful thank you very much guys I should catch you on another adventure soon and as always cheers for now
What a fascinating place this was! The New Town Hall in Hannover, Germany is quite an impressive place both outside and in. I was staying in Hannover anyway and decided to pop down to the New Town Hall after watching the Tom Scott video on its quirky and unique elevator. On the way I enjoyed the streets and some of the buildings of this lovely city and once I’d gone inside the Town Hall, well, it was certainly impressive!
Join me on this trip and I’ll show you all the sights and sounds plus a full-length video of the actual trip in the elevator and I was quite priveleged on the day to be able to have it all to myself. I’ll tell you how to get there, how much it costs, when it’s open and what you can see on the way (and how to see it!). A bit of a departure for me with this video but I’ve had a few requests for me to film some of the places I see when I’m off on my travels. I hope a few of you can come along with me and please let me know if you enjoy this style of video. I may make some more!
Thanks as always guys for watching and supporting the channel. It is very much appreciated.
Cheers for now.
Mark

Interesting video again Mark, Hannover looked nice with some pedestrian areas and I thought having βred linesβ to help tourists to see the major attractions a very good idea. Very impressive town hall which certainly does have a quirky and unique elevator. Great scenery from the top with lovely views. π
It is interesting to see Hannover
as I only really know it from changing trains there
and going to meetings.
My town, Bielefeld, has an Altes Rathaus (late medieval and now used as a theatre),
Neues Rathaus (built a few years before Hannover's) and
a Modernes Rathaus (built in the 1970s and where the staff work – sort of like a Civic Centre)
It seems to have been a common pattern for the industrial towns of Northern Germany.
Top stuff Mark, I could spend months going around the historical buildings and sites of Germany, fascinating country and so cheap to get around, Hannover definitely worth a longer visit.
Not sure if lifts count as public transport but the Tyne Tunnel is said to have some interesting ones just installed rather like funicular railways.Although I haven't been to try them yet as they have only just opened.
Mark, now you're going to be doing a circumnavigation of Europe's elevators! If you do, make sure you do the glass elevator on the building which houses the Italian unknown soldier in Rome. Right on Piazza Venetia at the end of the Fori Imperiali. Stunning 360 views of Rome – including Sophia Loren's apartment!
That lift is my ultimate nightmare.. Dont really have a head for heights so being able to look down would freak me out.. None the less it does look fascinating.. Great vid. π
Boston has the Freedom Trail – still a great way to see the city.
So lucky to have the place to yourself. Makes for a completely different experience.π
For the plaque at 3:50 – in short, they started building the church in 1347 on the site of an early romanesque chapel, the tower was built in 1717. (I guess they assume, everybody understands the bombing was related to WWII due to the date.) Since 1952 the ruins are a memorial for victims of war and violence.
And for the elevator, Tom Scott concluded his video by: for a video about an elevator ride, that was a lot of steps. π
Like most people I have passed through Hanover on the train when travelling between Berlin and Amsterdam. I visited the Hartz Mountains on a school trip back,in 1993 and did travel on one of the steam railways you mentioned. Hanover looks a nice rebuilt city and certainly the view from the new town hall, looked great and for a low price. I always try and find a viewing point if the price is right when visiting any city, This week I went up relatively new 120 Fenchurch Street in London which gives fantastic views of the City and itβs free.
Ah I'm going to Boston soon and the freedom trail is first on my list!
Excellent video, Mark. Man builds, man destroys, man rebuilds, hopefully…. At least we get to see some of the original artistry.
You were so lucky to have the place to yourself it's so nice to have a place to yourself and enjoy it more without other people getting in your way It is a very interesting and enjoyable video to watch thank you again Mark

Nice looking town and a fascinating lift and got to experience without crowds of people. Thank you.
When i first saw the modern buildings i thought the Allies had payed a visit.π
Another great video Mark, nice one
What a magnificent building! It reminded me a little of Belfast City Hall. So great to have it all to yourself. Loved the elevator and the curved staircase at the top. So cool.
How cool. Not just the elevator but the city and the whole of that town hall. Thanks for sharing it π
What a fabulous building and what an elevator. I absolutely loved this.

Great video as usual Mark, like a previous comment, great to have the place to yourself ! π
I love Hannover! My family are from here and I was only here less than a week ago. Such a great experience going on the curved dome lift.
We love city break holidays visiting German cities including Hannover – so interesting
Beautiful place, Mark and what a view ftom the top! π
