The Citadel of Gozo was initially built for security reasons. Both Malta and Gozo had significant strategic importance in the Mediterranean but was also very exposed to Ottoman and corsair attacks. One of the most important events in 16th century Mediterranean History was the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, which almost led to its Ottoman conquest.
