The Ultimate Guide To Munich – Everything You Need to Know & More
hey there folks the Scottdale travel chick sidekick here to present our Ultimate Guide to Munich Germany in this video we’ll tell you everything you need to know about Munich from all the best sites to how to get around the best times to visit the best day trips nearby and even some dining and night life tips too and we’ll show you everything on maps so you’ll know precisely where to go once you’re there okay let’s go first up just a bit of background on Munich the city of Munich is located at the very bottom of Germany and it’s the capital of the German state of bararia it has an ideal location very near Austria and Switzerland as well as easy access to the German Alps Munich is best known for its old style architecture its culture and its focus on beer culminating with its world famous October Fest celebration which many don’t realize mostly happens in September finishing in the first week of October Munich has a population of almost 3 million people in the greater metro area making it the third largest city in Germany but even though it’s big its core Oldtown area still feels very much like a small village when you experience it another great thing about the Old Town is that almost the entire area is free of cars and the length of Munich’s pedestrian area runs for almost 3 kilometers as attractive as Munich itself is its location near the Alps and other unique sites nearby making an even bigger draw for tourists than the city itself there are just so many great things to do and see nearby it’s hard to choose but we’re going to make it easy for you with our top five day trips later in the video how best to get around Munich’s airport is located about 30 km or 18 Mi Northeast of the city center and it’s the second biggest airport in Germany and seventh busiest in Europe the airport is connected to Central Munich by their Suburban S1 and S8 train lines these run frequently and it takes about 40 minutes and cost about €1 in addition to the trains leanza also runs an airport shuttle bus to munix Central Station with a fair of around € if you do prefer to take a taxi or Uber directly to your destination the fair will be around €65 to the downtown Oldtown area the best way to get around in Munich once you’ve arrived is by using Munich’s excellent transit system with a mix of trains trams and buses it’s called the mvv and it allows you to use one ticket for everything and actually I probably lied about the trains being the best way to get around the real best way to get around if you’re up for it is by bicycle with over 200 km or 125 miles of bike trails and bike Lanes across the city and into the countryside you can get virtually anywhere as quick as any taxi and quicker than the Metro System there are multiple rental options around the main train station and most hotels will help you book bikes if not already have them themselves for their paying customers we use bicycles for our entire stay in Munich and it was great we went everywhere and got a real locals perspective of the city along the way finally both taxis and Uber are available anywhere in Munich we actually prefer Uber due to the ease and no physical money transacted but taxis can be used and can be found throughout the city at Main train stations and of course at the airport lastly what about Renning a car well Munich has such a great train system and there are quite a few tour operators here also so unless you’re really going somewhere seldom visited or driving between cities there’s really no good reason to rent a car in Munich the best times to visit Munich has a somewhat mild continental climate which is strongly affected by the nearby Alps this means precipitation can be higher than you might expect during your visit yet rainstorms will come suddenly and pass quickly winter weather is surprisingly limited mostly from December through March while the rest of the year is quite Pleasant the best time to come to Munich overall is probably September due to the favorable weather and of course October Fest but this will also be the most crowded and the most expensive time to visit as well as Peak summer months and the month of December if you do need to travel during the summer months our Pro tip is to make it June as this is before the general European holiday period starts and all the Germans and others come to Munich where to stay usually for guides like this we give a couple of specific areas to consider but to me Munich feels surprisingly small and I think staying anywhere in the core area within this radius is a reasonable choice we stayed over near the English garden which I would say is a little bit out of the way from the city center but even there it was no more than a 20-minute bike ride or a train tram ride to get to almost anywhere we wanted to go the top things to see and do now finally let’s get to the top things to see and do in and around Munich I’ll start off with Munich’s core old town area and its main Square then I’ll progress outward from there starting off at the very center of Oldtown is the Marian plots or main Square which is surrounded by many of Munich’s famous sites all in a walkable area front and center on the Square taking up one entire side is the gigantic Town Hall this ornate Gothic Revival building is a feast for the eyes with many spires arches and statues it’s great to visit in the day as well as well as after dark when they often have some type of Illumination show in the [Music] evening but the real magic here at the Town Hall happens three times a day during the summer months when the glocken Spiel Springs to life and motorized wooden figures move and Chimes play it’s happened every day since 1908 time your visit accordingly which is typically 11:00 a.m. noon and 5:00 p.m. performances the Church of our lady or frown Kirch is nearby in a major Munich Landmark that dominates the skyline the interior of this Cathedral is among the largest in Germany and it can hold up to 20,000 people it’s not only the biggest church in Munich but it’s also one of the oldest consecrated in 1494 and it remains largely unchanged since [Music] another church St Peter’s Church is also nearby and it is the oldest church of Munich city center it was first built during the Romanesque period around 1255 before Munich was even a city today it’s often known as Ulta Peter for its large 300t tall main tower and it’s a prime example of late Barbarian Baroque style inside you’ll Marvel at the fresh go on the ceiling as well as the beautiful high altar made seemingly from pure silver and gold a very popular bonus here is that for a mere €4 you can climb to the top of the church Tower and take in some amazing views out over Central Munich it’s well worth the small fee but there’s no elevator so you’ll have to climb the narrow stairs all the way to the top okay what are we going to do go up inside this church I think all the way to the top we got to climb up there all right we’re climbing up this church Tower we’re going to go all the way up in [Music] there another church where the stop is St Michael’s Church St Michael is the largest Renaissance Church North of the Alps built between 1583 and 1597 it was a spiritual center for The Counter Reformation and fun fact the Crypt here contains members of the Widow Bach Dynasty including the famous fairy tale king or crazy King Ludwick II finally one more small But Mighty Church you shouldn’t Miss is the tiny Assam Church you might watch right past it if you aren’t looking closely as it’s only 8 m wide by 22 M long but don’t miss it it’s beautiful inside and was built by Two Brothers it was originally meant as a private church but after protests from citizens it was open to the public for [Music] viewing okay now with all those churches out of the way let’s talk about the very first castle established to manage the area with when Munich was just a small village it’s called the alter Hoff and its Origins date way back to 1100 ad when it was the Imperial residence of Louis ivth Holy Roman Emperor not much remains from that Old period but our Pro tip here is there’s a great but little known Museum in the basement of this building which offers up a free movie narrating Munich’s Origins and progress during those very early years of existence it’s worth the [Music] stop next up another very popular site to explore in the old town is Munich’s farmers market or violan Market I think it’s pronounced in German it’s an active market today with more than 100 stalls to explore but this place has been around for more than 200 years adding to the ambience here there’s a large Beer Garden in the center of course huh and as well as a traditional M pole if you’re Keen to check that out too continuing out further from Munich’s main Square there are two tourist Centric streets to explore as well as the hofra house this is a huge Beer Hall that’s world famous it’s owned by the state-owned Hoff bra Brewery and provides a space for over 2,500 guests it’s been in existence since 1589 in grabbing a drink here is one of the most popular things to do in Munich however don’t expect to meet many locals here as at very [Music] touristy next up is the Hoff garden and all that surrounds it the Hoff Garden itself is a really Pleasant Garden for relaxing and the bonus is you’ll often have a chance to experience local performers here which is a really nice [Music] experience odium plots is a large 19th Century Square just outside the garden which is lined by ornate buildings some of them with a Roman influence and this square is in the location of one of the Orin medieval gates to the city of Munich sometimes large concerts are held here the Barbarian State Chancellor building is just to the east of this garden and is the executive office building for the Bavarian State president fun fact it looks old but it was just completed in [Music] 1993 finally the massive Munich residence to the south of the garden is the largest city- centered Palace in Germany originally built in 1385 it started out as a small moded Castle but was gradually expanded to what it is today by the whittles boach family who used it as their residence and seat of government for almost 400 years it’s huge with more than 130 staterooms to explore during an extended tour but the Magnificent antiquarium and the ancestor Gallery are probably the most popular Parts there are even more buildings squares and famous streets to explore in this area too many to cover here so just get out and walk around or better yet ride your bike around moving out a bit further from the old town we come to the krol rail area or the AR quarter with its world famous museums did you know there are more than 60 museums in Munich well there are and many of those are quite sizable and quite a few of those are centered here the most famous being the Ulta Pinot it’s also the oldest Museum in Munich and home to an outstanding collection of German Italian and Flemish Masters such as Da Vinci Rembrant and rubben more than 900 paintings are constantly on display and pro tip here on Sundays you can visit most museums for only one euro and just try to avoid Mondays though when most museums are closed finally moving out further still but still a short train ride or bike ride from anywhere you’ll come to some of the coolest sites in all of Munich the English garden is just Northeast of Oldtown and it’s a massive Park containing multiple beer gardens multiple Lakes many streams and Creeks more than 76 km or 47 mies of walking and biking paths and even surfing Yep they’re surfing in Munich this is the place where most locals hang out in the summer so expected to be packed after work and certainly on weekends the park is divided into two areas the more livly southern part and the more quiet northern park most of the parting and relaxation by large crowds happen in the southern part of the park so if you want to have some peace and quiet you’ll most likely end up in the northern part but there are some crowds there too just of the animal type there are three beer gardens spread across the park but the Chinese Tower beer garden is the most famous with live music on weekends it’s a great place to hang out and make friends and coming back to that surfing eyes boach way wave is at the very south part of the park and not only great for Surfers but great for spectators as well check it out it’s one of the few City Center surfing areas in the world the deutches or German museum is just across the river from Oldtown I don’t usually call out museums and our destination guides but the German Museum might be worth it it’s the world’s largest Science and Technology Museum and it has its own island in the middle of the river it receives over 1.5 million visitors each year so it might be worth adding to your list particularly if you have kids moving to the north side of Munich you have the world famous BMW welt or BMW World here in one place you have a very large showroom a BMW Museum and the BMW factory tour this is BMW overlook Lo for sure BMW World showroom is free to visit and it’s worth it in itself just to see the latest models not only from BMW but from their subsidiaries such as mini and Rolls-Royce the multi-story BMW museum is directly next door and reservations are required here but they can easily be booked online or in person on arrival the BMW factory tour is a little harder to get these tours are limited to weekdays and most fill up months in advance so get on the website early if you want to be a part of that nberg Palace on the east side of Munich is another popular touris site not to be missed this was the summer residence of Barbarian kings and Prince electors and looks very much like some of the huge chat in France there are three museums in the palace to explore floor as well as the massive and beautiful gardens not to be outdone but certainly lesser known the sliim palace just north of the city is another great palace to explore and the bonus here is that it’s much less [Music] crowded finally a multifaceted attraction worth your time is Munich’s Olympic Park at over 200 Acres it was origin created for the 1972 Olympics the Olympic Tower with 360° views and Alliance Stadium are here along with tons of walking and biking paths an aquarium multiple beer gardens boating on a lake and tons of other fun stuff around every corner and if you happen to be here on Game Day Munich’s Bayern professional soccer club plays here there there is no doubt much more to see and do in Munich but I think I’ve covered the biggies here now once you’ve had your fill of Munich proper it’s time to get out of town for some great day trips there are tons of choices to pick from but I’m going to do the dirty work for you narrow them all down to my top five right here but before I do just a quick shout out here that if you’re enjoying this video please give us a thumbs up maybe a comment or better yet for this to a few of your friends and please consider subscribing to our channel to receive more fun informative travel videos just like this one okay let’s hit those top day trips number one less than 30 minutes from Munich is a somber site but also an important one the daha Concentration Camp it was the first such camp in Germany and served as a model for all subsequent concentration camps under the Nazi regime in its 12 years of existence more than 200,000 people were imprisoned here as well as sadly more than 32,000 documented deaths the next two choices are beautiful Alpine Retreats both wonderful in the winter but I’m talking the summertime there are dozens of Alpine excursions nearby Munich but I think these two are the best I’ll focus on the first one and then mention the other one one is a backup garish Parton kirchin is a little more than an hour from Munich and here you can experience an Alpine Wonderland and take Gondola rides up to the highest peaks in the Alps there’s a beautiful Alpine Lake summer tobogan rides Alpine beer gardens tons of hiking and some absolutely incredible views the Burton Garden area and Hitler’s eagle nest is another Top Choice but a bit further away this Alpine Retreat offers up a mix of pristine natural beauty mixed with some dark Nazi history check out our links below for a recommended tour providers for both these Alpine excursions my number four day trip recommendation is to take a package tour to SLO newtin these packages include other sites but this Castle is the main attraction it’s often said to be the most famous castle in the world in the outlandish project of barbaria Mad King Ludwick famously it’s the inspiration for the castles you see today at Disneyland and Disney World our fifth Choice here is to take a trip to salsburg Austria less than 2hour train ride away again tons of things to see and do here like visiting salt mines taking Alpine gondolas to ice caves and touring all the sites for The Sound of Music movie which was largely filmed here again check out our links below for some awesome tour providers now let’s talk just a tiny bit about dining and nightlife in Munich Munich’s nightlife is diverse in both offerings and locations so it’s hard to call out only a couple of places but I’ll try to do it by a few areas I’m sure some locals will correct me with their favorites but these are the three best areas for local focused dining and nightlife muncher fry height or the swabbing area which is just North of the city center the banana zone or the area between sendlinger tour and Max ailon plots and the area around Gardner plots a bit Southeast from the main Square Mar Lots each of these areas has a lot to offer but maybe seek out a local bosen bar which is Munich’s equivalent to a dive bar bar they’re mostly cozy little places with slot machines and maybe a local drunk or two finally I’d be remiss if I didn’t Circle back here and say spend some quality time at a few of Munich’s beer gardens they are the epitome of Munich’s culture so just do it prefer at some of the more local ones outside the Oldtown area maybe in the parks nearby or nearby the [Music] riverfront well there you have it folks our ultimate guide on how to get the best out of your visit to Munich
