Hello everyone and welcome to Lille! Lille is a city in northern France, in French Flanders. Located along the Deûle, near the border with Belgium. It is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region and the Nord department and one of the main cities of the European metropolis. It actually has 236k inhabitants and its agglomeration of more than a million inhabitants. The fourth most populous in France after Paris, Lyon and Marseille. It is a city gate within the walls of Lille built at the end of the 17th century (1692) as a triumphal arch to celebrate the victories of Louis XIV, then completed at the end of the 19th century (1895). Today, all that remains of the palace is a small building, a chapel, a 15th century staircase and a few 19th century arcades. The building’s guard room currently houses the town’s tourist office. What were the Dukes of Burgundy doing in Lille?… Lille was, between the 14th and 15th centuries, under the authority of the Dukes of Burgundy and experienced a period of prosperity.
