SONGKRAN IN THE RAIN? FESTIVAL MAY BE HELD ON JULY 7
BANGKOK — Officials on Tuesday said the festivals and three-day holidays associated with the Thai New Year, which was cancelled earlier due to the coronavirus, might be held next month instead. Cultural minister Ittipol Khunpluem said the government’s coronavirus response centre will meet on Friday to discuss the new proposed dates for this year’s Songkran holidays, which last for three days every year. “We must consider it carefully,” Ittipol said. July falls under Thailand’s rainy season.

SMOKING KILLS
A 27-year-old Kalasin man was arrested for an alleged gun attack on a fellow-employee at their factory in Samut Prakan province after being told not to smoke in the workplace. The suspect was arrested. CCTV footage from May 26 showed a man firing a gun at a colleague in the Samut Prakan factory before the suspect fled the scene.

AMBASSADOR CALLS THE US “BETTER FRIEND” THAN CHINA TO THAILAND
US Ambassador to Thailand Michael George DeSombre said that the US spat with China won’t affect relations in the region and nations will not have to take sides. He expects more American companies to invest in the Kingdom in the coming months and years and reiterated that the US is a “better friend” to Thailand and to other ASEAN countries

RANONG — Wiggling out from the water, rubbing their backs and bellies along the beach weren’t the usual crowd of tourists, but of rare sea otters. Residents of Koh Phayam in Ranong Friday spotted at least 10 smooth-coated otters playing on the beach, months after tourists left the island due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima said on Tuesday that a prevalent dengue fever outbreak had already killed two and sickened more than 1,000 residents since the beginning of 2020.

CHINA DRIVERLESS ELECTRIC TRAIN FOR BANGKOK
BANGKOK – The first rubber-tired, self-driving electric train is scheduled to arrive in Thailand on June 10 for the Gold Line monorail in Bangkok’s Thonburi. The delivery of the train was postponed from April due to the Covid-19 situation. Metropolitan Administration said about the progress of the Gold Line project from BTS Krung Thonburi station to the Klong San District Office.
