A Jewel of Romanesque Art in Savoie, French Alps! #aimelaplagne #frenchmoments #frenchalps
Bonjour, this is Pierre from French Moments. Today, I’d like to show you a beautiful Romanesque edifice. This is the Saint-Martin basilica in Aime, a little town in the Tarentaise Valley in Savoie. This church is one of Aime’s oldest buildings and a jewel of Romanesque art in Savoie. The sanctuary was built in the 11th century in Lombard Romanesque style. It features a massive bell tower. Inside the church are Byzantine-style frescoes from the 12th century. In the 19th century, excavations were led in the crypt. They revealed the remains of a Roman basilica from the second century AD and a primitive church from the 7th century. The Aime basilica was a priory church belonging to the Saint-Michel-de-la-Cluse in the Susa Valley in present-day Italy.
