My trip to Karnala Bird Sanctuary near Mumbai got me face to face with The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher also known as black-backed kingfisher or three-toed kingfisher. Colorful, vibrant, and lively this bird made my birding trip a grand success.
Size of ODK – 13 cm
Found in – Southern & Northern range of Western Ghats India, Sri Lanka, and Northeast. Also found in Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Preferred habitat – Small streams in densely shaded forests
Food habits – Small vertebrates, including forest skink, geckos, lizards, crabs, tadpoles, snails, frogs, crickets, and dragonflies.
