travel apps I used while backpacking Southeast Asia

hello what’s up and welcome back to my channel Rome with ra if you don’t know who I am my name is Rachel and I make videos on fashion travel and environmentalism so if you like any of those things you should consider subscribing to me I feel like standing for today’s video I feel like I’ve been sitting down so much that I feel like I need to move around lately in today’s video I’m going to be talking all about different apps that I used when I was backpacking southeast Asia now I feel like a lot of people find my channel based on my southeast Asia packing videos or my southeast Asia Vlogs I believe a link to my southeast Asia playlist which has everything in there because a lot of people love to backpack southeast Asia and it makes sense why honestly my southeast Asia trip was my favorite backpacking trip that I’ve done so far some things that I wish I knew before I went to Southeast Asia were the apps that I would need to utilize some of them are like classic traveler apps that you can use on any trip and then some of the apps in this video are specific to backpacking southeast Asia so let’s get into it let’s talk about the apps [Music] I’ve got my phone here does anyone when they get a new cell phone case like make it their whole personality I’m like this is my new personality right now this bad boy right here okay so so the first app is going to feel like an obvious one but it is Google translate if you don’t know what Google Translate is it’s a translation app it’s just like what it sounds so you can type things into Google what I also really enjoyed on this trip specifically was utilizing the Google Lens the Google Lens utilizes your camera and it can translate text that you see in real time into the language that you want it to be in so for me I was utilizing this in a lot of packages one thing about southeast Asia is that some of the soap packages for example are skin whitening products and I didn’t want to use skin whitening products so I would look on a lot of soap packages with my Google Lens to make sure that I was doing the right thing or buying what I wanted to be buying just quick translation that you’ll need dayto day especially for Southeast Asia I feel like when I went to Central America I started learning Spanish and that helped me a lot I feel like you need that basis of Spanish knowledge before you go backpacking Central America but for Asia there’s so many different countries that you’re visiting and I think it’d be very challenging to master them all so Google translate was super helpful with communicating with people and just all the time Google Google Translate and the Google Lens the next app I used a lot was get your guide I feel like this is an app I use all the time traveling get your guide is a app where you can book different excursions and Unique Travel experiences I like get your guide because it’s got a lot of like real time honest reviews everything is done through the app and then you get your ticket like a QR code on the app for whatever Excursion that you choose to do I booked some of my excursions when I was in Southeast Asia through this app and I found it really easy this is of course when maybe you can’t find an Excursion at your hostel that you want to do or you want to do a more unique experience get your guide is really good for that it’s also really good when you’re doing research for a trip because then you can figure out okay what are the popular things to do in this area the next app I love to use on a lot of my trips that I go on and is hostile World okay hostile world is a website but it also has an app now and there’s a lot of like really fun features on hostile world if you’re not familiar with hosle world it’s basically an app where it organizes a lot of popular hosts in whatever area you’re going with you can book everything on the hosle world site you can make a hostile World account which is what I do and what I have I really like the super honest reviews again just like with gety guide hostile world has reviews and they’re just very blatantly honest the Hostile World reviews are so raw and real from Travelers who utilize hostile world so it really gives you a good picture of what a hostle is like hosle world has also come out with like new features that I’ve seen people utilizing when I meet them at Host I haven’t used it yet myself but there are features where there are group chats for the hostel that you’re staying at so you can join this group chat and then maybe if you are not meeting people in your dorm room or you haven’t met anyone around your hostel yet you can simply Post in the group chat and say hey does anyone want to go you know to this Temple today hey is anyone thinking about going out tonight it’s a really good way of utilizing technology to make friends honestly I haven’t had to use it yet because I am super outgoing so I will just walk up to some someone in my hostel and ask what they’re doing and try to make a friend that way but maybe if you’re someone who’s a little bit more reserved this might be a good option for you because you’re able to just text in the group chat and see what everyone’s up to it’s also good for making plans with people that you’ve already met because then you can easily just message them in the group chat hey just so you know we’re all going to the bar tonight whoever wants to come you can make for friends and get people to join in the next app is the currency app now I use the currency app all the time I really like that this app you can use it offline I met a girl when I was in Thailand who used it and I was like that is the smartest thing ever when you’re traveling from country to Country so quickly it’s hard to get a gauge of what that price is in your own currency I find if you’re in a country for a while you can kind of figure it out and connect it back but this is really good for backpacking when you’re switching countries so quickly it is an app you can utilize offline which is really helpful because not all the time you’re going to have data or Wi-Fi but yeah this currency app and you can add in a bunch of different currencies just really helpful really helpful to have the next app I feel like I always get people asking me how I take my cute photos when I’m traveling by myself and lens buddy is the answer okay lens buddy is just basically an app that you can use to take photos you can set like a self timer you can set how many photos you want taken or how many photos you want each second you can set a time limit you can just have it go until you stop it but lens buddy is really good because I’ll set my lens buddy up with either a tripod or just in a space where I want to take a photo of myself and it’ll just snap photos for me it’s like when you ask a girl to take photos of you and the girls know to just keep snapping photo after photo okay and that’s what lens buddy does so it’s like a girly pop when you don’t have a girly Pop there’s someone there to take a photo of you here’s an example of some of the photos that I’ve taken using lens buddy again super helpful so if you want to take cute photos get Lun buddy it’s also good for different angles because you you kind of like set it up in an angle and then have it snap a bunch of pictures and if you don’t like that angle you can shift and maneuver it sometimes it’s a trial and air process but if you want to get a cute photo and you’re by yourself you got to do what you got to do okay next one is nordvpn this is the VPN that I use when traveling to keep me safe from any cyber attacks so basically what you can do when you create an account on the app is you can go in and select the virtual private Network that you want to utilize I usually just connect back back to my home country which is Canada and then this way I know that I am safe when I’m browsing on public Wi-Fi networks because sometimes when you’re browsing on public Wi-Fi networks you can be attacked by like cyberstalkers so this kind of creates your own private Network so that you’re safe even when you’re utilizing public Wi-Fi I also find it really helpful when I’m traveling and I want to watch a show that’s on like the Netflix back in Canada but it’s not on the Netflix or the country I’m currently traveling in this is great because you are on your own own little private Network you can just switch to Canada on the app and then it’ll show you all Canadian stuff super helpful I’ve never had any issues with it and it’s really good when you jumping on different Wi-Fi all the time the next app is called one two go Asia it is super useful I literally booked all of my transportation to and from different cities through this app whether that was fairies buses trains everything I booked with 12 go Asia you can book some things at your hostel and sometimes that works out sometimes it doesn’t but I just found paying that little bit extra on one to go Asia knowing that nothing was ever going to be wrong like it was always going to work out that satisfaction of knowing that that security of knowing that it was just very helpful 100% recommended to book Transportation within cities I’ve never had any issues and I was backpacking for like 3 and a half months with it the next app is Google Maps I prefer using Google Maps over the maps app that comes with your iPhone I just find Google Maps is more easy to navigate it works better in more cities and it connects with different things it can connect with like different ride sharing apps which is really helpful when I was just in Sweden and Denmark it connected with like the bike rental or the scooter rental that I was using which is very helpful and so Google Maps is just I think the top dog in the map sharing apps okay also what I like to do in Google Maps is save certain things so like places I want to go or place I want to visit or a pin if I want to remember to like return back to this spot again you can create little saved lists in Google Maps which I find really helpful and really easy to send to other people like for example let’s say you’re at this really good restaurant and you want to tell a friend about it it’s really easy to just save it in your list and then send to a friend it’s also really good when you’re planning out travel because you’re like okay I’ve already looked ahead at where I’m going and I can save a couple spots that I want to visit that one’s a no-brainer but I had to I had to share my favorite uses of the app the next app I love to use I’m a Google girl I guess okay Google docs for those of you who don’t know is an app where you can edit and share a document in real time so basically I create all my travel itineraries on Google Docs and then I share it with my boyfriend my mom my friends my family whoever wants to know where the heck I am at that point in time I really like it when you’re backpacking because sometimes you don’t have everything planned out to a tea and you’re editing and adding things in real time so this was good because my mom who would religiously look at my Google Docs was able to see oh this is what Rachel’s doing this is what she’s changed I see you’re going here instead now without me having to text her or text everyone all the time about what I’m doing it was just check the Google Doc you can see where I am I even like checked off like different things that I’ve done so then my mom would see when I check it off she would ask me about it later that day then your family knows where you are and if something’s wrong they can call you or call the local authorities hopefully not okay knock on W the last app I would recommend getting is the grab app grab is like the Uber of Asia it’s super easy to book rides on there not only in a car but also in a tuck tuck or a motorbike you’ll notice that some of the tuck tuck and motorbikes have cheaper options it worked in a lot of Southeast Asian countries so definitely recommend downloading that before you go then you have it and you’re ready some thing I really like about the grab app is that you can actually pay in person so you can choose to link your card to the app but I much preferred paying cash for most places that I was in that way I could give them a little tip and that way I didn’t have to like hook my credit card up to another app I feel like I have my credit card hooked up to so many apps so it felt nice to just like use cash because Southeast Asian countries are very cash driven countries there you have all of the apps that I would recommend you download before you go to Southeast Asia these apps were so helpful thank goodness I live in a time where I can travel using my phone I often think about people who went backpacking our forefathers before us okay how the heck did they backpack without a cell phone I don’t know I’m I’m a total Millennial so like I need my phone if you found this video helpful please give it a thumbs up it really helps me out and consider subscribing to me that is all your Rome with ra of the day I do post videos every single Sunday at 11:00 a.m. if
