Driving in Germany: Autobahn A45 E41 from Aschaffenburg to Gießen

In this video you can ride along on Autobahn A45 E41 from Aschaffenburg to Gießen in Germany’s Bavaria and Hessen states. The A45 was built a few decades ago to relieve important International corridors like the A3 and A61 from traffic and provide a viable alternative between the Ruhrgebiet and the Frankfurt am Main region.

The A45 was a challenging and costly project to build, given it traverses a hilly landscape requiring many valley-spanning bridges. In recent years lots of maintenance has been required to upkeep the A45 to a certain standard and unfortunately many of these bridges did not meet the quality standards that were anticipated. As a result many bridges have to be replaced and there is the famous case at Lüdenscheid South of Dortmund where a bridge had to be closed and demolished before a new bridge could be put in place. The A45 is therefore currently not the corridor it should be but it’s still used by intercity traffic, especially the southern section featured in this video.
