Exploring America’s Poorest Region Alone

My Book, JUST GO, is out! Grab it here on Amazon! https://rb.gy/phjsc0

This is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time – West Virginia. Appalachian accents. Southern hospitality.

I spent 24 hours driving alone through America’s poorest region, called McDowell County. It’s a place where the minimum household income is less than $29,000 USD, and where ghost towns have been left behind in the aftermath of a booming coal industry.

In many respects, this is the forgotten America—a place where time has seemingly stood still. Yet, the narratives you’ll encounter here are among the most compelling I’ve ever told, anywhere in the world.

I’ve been telling travel stories since 2017 – more than 1,200 videos – and about 97% of them have been overseas. But now I’m beginning to realize that the most captivating ones are right here, in my own backyard.

Thank you for watching this story – and a special shoutout to Dave and Tess who spontaneously joined me to help bring this West Virginia story to life. I can’t wait to help get them a passport and take them on their first international trip soon! Where should we go?!

  1. This story was fascinating to experience and I’m so grateful to have randomly met Dave and Tess on the street. They really helped introduce this hidden slice of America that is virtually unknown to both Americans and the outside world. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Appalachian culture and McDowell County overall – I’ll be glued to my computer, reading and responding to as many of your comments as I can. Love you all and stay tuned for another story in the U.S. next week đŸ‡șđŸ‡žđŸ™đŸŒ

  2. God bless Dave & Tess… They're lovely couple… Real people (u know what I mean) , with big heart and very welcoming to everyone… Really love to see them again in another video.

  3. I want some people to understand or try to understand something, like that one man that lived in his moms old house for 34 years the house with the no lights no water , when drew said “ oh why doesn’t he ask a friend or family member for help?”

A lot of people ask that question “ why don’t you ask you parents, why can’t you stay with them? , well can’t you ask your friend? Your cousin or family members?” There’s a lot of people that don’t have that Luxary
there’s a lot of people reading this that know they would never be homeless because their parents wouldn’t never allow that. I was born and put straight into adoption, was adopted as a baby and had adopted parents until I was 17 years old and then after that BAM goodbye. I don’t have “ family members” I have no idea what it’s like to be able to call my mom or dad and ask them for 20$ I have no idea what it’s like getting a brand new or even used car for my graduation thats completely insane to me and I had some friends that would ask me “ well didn’t your parents get you this? Or do that?” Umm no
. Yeah right
people have it so good that they have no idea what life is like with nobody. Most of you reading this couldn’t even fathom living like that
I been on my own since I was 17 years old and let me tell you
. I feel completely robbed of the human experience and I envy a lot of people and I pray to god that when I die I never ever have to come back here and if I HAVE TO please please let me have the next round of life with my actual real parents that have my back when I really need them. I see some people that hug their parents and laugh and just idk
live normal.. and to me it’s so foreign I don’t even understand it. I’m not some 40 ,50 year old either
. I’m in my 20s
. And the damage that not having family or actual friends
not having a grandmother to go visit or being able to say “ me and my cousin did this over the summer” not having any of that, I’m sure it effect me in a way where I just.. idk. All I wanna do is lay in a corner and cry and I can’t help it. What I’m saying is
 understand that some people
when they say “ I don’t have anybody”
. Don’t ask them a stupid question like that” why don’t you ask your family?”
cause those are the dumbest questions I get asked.

  5. I have family from Mann, Logan, Huntington, and several other counties.. Makes me so sad to see the state in desperate need and seems the government don’t care to help them..

  6. A mídia nos mostra somente o glamour da América do Norte e na realidade tem muitas histórias como essa em que a população é totalmente esquecida. Um abraço, assisto daqui do Brasil.

  7. i’m from here a i just want to say i know everyone here at just the age of 15. we might be on the spectrum of poor a infested with drug abuse. but those drug addicts and poor ppl would do a lot for u if u needed it. they shouldn’t be put on the spot and labeled bc they don’t make up to par money in the economy.

  8. That was quite an eye opener. Thank you. For three years I worked in the inner city of Milwaukee and they were the kindest and most honest people with whom I’ve ever worked. Much like these West Virginians.

  9. You passed a Montgomery Ward shop as you said there were no recognizable brands there. Montgomery wards used to be as big as Walmart for many many generations.
