Abbey Notre-Dame de Sénanque
Sénanque Abbey | Drone Flight Over the Stunning Lavender Fields in Provence
Welcome to my channel! In this episode, I take you to one of the most beautiful and photogenic places in all of Provence – Sénanque Abbey (Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque), nestled in a peaceful valley near the charming town of Gordes, France. This place not only stands as a testament to the rich history and spiritual heritage of the region, but it’s also a feast for the senses, especially in the summer when the surrounding lavender fields are in full bloom, painting the landscape in shades of purple.
During my visit, I had the incredible opportunity to fly my drone over Sénanque Abbey, capturing breathtaking aerial views that are hard to put into words. The majestic abbey surrounded by lavender fields from above looks absolutely magical, and the stark beauty of this place leaves a lasting impression. The video features sweeping shots of the landscape and a close-up look at the abbey’s architecture, which has mesmerized visitors for centuries with its simplicity and elegance.
Where is Sénanque Abbey?
Sénanque Abbey is located in the heart of Provence, one of the most picturesque and enchanting regions of France, known for its endless lavender fields, charming villages, and unique light that has drawn artists from all over the world. The abbey lies just a few kilometers from Gordes, one of France’s most beautiful villages, which is also worth a visit if you’re in the area. The road to the abbey winds through scenic paths, rolling hills, and, of course, the iconic lavender fields.
A Brief History of Sénanque Abbey
Founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks, Sénanque Abbey is a prime example of Romanesque architecture, characterized by its austere lines and minimalist design. In this case, however, the simplicity of the building harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural beauty, creating a serene image of spiritual and material worlds in balance.
During its peak, the abbey played an important role in the spiritual and economic life of the region. The monks not only devoted themselves to prayer and contemplation but also to farming the land, cultivating lavender and wheat. However, the abbey also faced difficult times, particularly during the French Revolution, when it was confiscated and the monks were forced to leave. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the order returned, and since then, the abbey has continued to serve as a functioning monastery.
Today, while monks still live and pray at Sénanque, the abbey is also open to tourists who come to experience its history and the beauty of its surroundings. A visit to Sénanque is like stepping back in time, to an era where the monks’ lives were focused on simplicity, contemplation, and working the land.
Why Visit Sénanque Abbey?
Sénanque is one of those rare places where spirituality, history, and natural beauty come together in perfect harmony. In the summer, when the lavender fields are in full bloom, the abbey becomes almost otherworldly. The sight of the purple fields surrounding the stone walls of the abbey is a true feast for the eyes and soul. In the colder months, when the lavender isn’t in bloom, the abbey takes on a more austere but still incredibly peaceful character, attracting those seeking quiet and reflection.
During my visit, I had the chance not only to walk around the abbey but also to take my drone up into the sky, which allowed me to show you this place from a completely different perspective. The footage I captured showcases the panoramic views of the lavender fields, the winding roads leading through the valleys, and the majestic architecture of the abbey.
