Overnight on the Kyiv Express Sleeper Train

Good evening folks and welcome to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi station in the heart of the Ukrainian capital What a beautiful station… Completed in 1932 You know the drill folks, an evening departure means one thing: night trains, of course! Tonight I’ll be boarding the night train “Kyiv Express” to Warsaw in Poland! The train departs Kyiv every night around 20:00; mine today is departing at 19:45 20 minutes before departure, the train pulls into the station… This is my second time with Ukrainian Railways (UZ). Last time, it was on another night train from Budapest! The larger coaches you see in the back are bound for Chelm and won’t go all the way to Warsaw, as their loading gauge doesn’t allow it beyond Chelm As you can see, UZ has coaches that are much smaller and built to run in Europe under its tighter loading gauge The Kyiv Express is equipped exclusively with sleeping cars no seating or couchette cars… Here’s my room for the next 14 hours to Warsaw, a classic compartment fitted with three beds (on my way to Kyiv, only two were made) You’ll find some storage located below the lower bed Everything you need for your bed, water, and a power outlet (the only one in the compartment) Everything is perfectly clean here compared to my other night train experiences I’ll be traveling in the middle bed tonight Since it’s a bit early, I’ll flip it later tonight… Pillow and extra bedding layers are stored on the top bed Main light switch, announcement volume, and attendant call button (you can also see if the toilets are occupied or not, something dearly missing on many night trains) Ready for departure! A massive ChS8 is passing through… Quite a vibe… Tonight I’ll be traveling with two ladies. It surprised me at first, as in Western Europe, women usually have their own compartment but not here. They were fine with my company One shunting engine was playing some music… If there are any connoisseurs here, feel free to comment down below We left Kyiv main station at 19:58 with a 13-minute delay. Nothing concerning so far! Tonight our train will travel via Dorohusk and Chelm. Overnight, our bogies will be swapped to accommodate the standard gauge used in Poland Let’s take a look at our route for tonight, shall we? Don’t miss the impressive yard right after Kyiv-Pass on your left-hand side… Ready for the night… As explained in my previous video, the bedding is outstanding. This extra layer provides so much added comfort! Kvass and night trains <3 Really relaxing evening... If you're wondering what I'm doing on a night train, bringing a Switch and Zelda is always a good idea! Alright folks, time to hit the sack. I'll go to bed early, as the night won't be quietÑpassport control and bogie swap will happen overnight Passport checks by the Ukrainian border police. No questions askedÑjust stamped my passport Once passport control is done, you can go back to sleep but not for long, as our train will go through a bogie swap As explained (and shown better) in my previous video, Ukraine inherited the wide gauge from the ex-Soviet Union. Hence, bogies need to be changed to run in Poland. It's a lengthy process, but worth watching if you're not sleeping The whole process is rather noisy, so be prepared not to sleep (or bring earplugs!) When I woke up again, the sun was rising over Poland! Then I slept again until around 8, a solid 5 hours of sleep in total Since Dorohusk, our Ukrainian coaches are attached to the classic Dorohusk - Warsaw Intercity train No shower here, but a large toilet that seems to have been perfectly maintained by the attendant No automatic sensors whatsoever, just classic buttons, but they do the job perfectly! You can even take a sneak peek through the floor! Quick walkthrough! Nothing fancy here folks - just a couple of sleeping cars. You can't enter the PKP Intercity section; it's simply closed No breakfast is provided, but you can purchase drinks from the attendant. Nothing better than tea in a traditional tea cup It's a beautiful day out ! Let's get some fresh air (at least my phone will!) These carriages are equipped with A/C, which is why you canÕt fully open the windows. Only a few can be (slightly) opened According to our schedule, we're running perfectly on time! If you're an international traveler and want to book this train, you need to use Polrail or book at a PKP or UZ station. I had a friend (дякую Rostyslav!) who bought the ticket for me The incredibly good state of Polish railway infrastructure always impresses me. Some lines here beat Germany, France, or Spain in terms of quality A PKP Intercity train is being maneuvered, we're definitely getting close to Warsaw The skyscrapers of Warsaw are finally in sight! We're making our way into our final stop: Warsaw East (Warszawa Wschodnia) We arrived right on time! Unlike my ride on the night train from Budapest, this journey to Warsaw felt much quicker (also because I slept better) This really is the best way to get to Kyiv, as this train has a much better capacity than the Budapest/Vienna train, which carries only two coaches and gets sold out very quickly! I really love the color scheme of UZ... Thanks for following me on this new night train adventure! I hope you enjoyed the video. Don't forget to subscribe so you donÕt miss any new videos every week

Привіт

  1. It wasn’t a shunting engine playing a random song, it was UZ seeing its flagship trains off with the accompaniment of a specially selected song for each such train. As someone already mentioned here, the Warsaw train departs to Hej, Sokoly, a 19th century song known in both Poland and Ukraine.

  2. Great trip. It's rare to see you got sleeping compartment shared with two woman, and you got middle bunk. And yeah as usual, Ex Soviet Train with iconic Glass of Tea.

  3. Thank you for the disclaimer at the beginning. I appreciate you openness and wish you all the best in your new – and I think very brave – venture. I also want to thank you for those pictures of Kyiv. We in Australia get an image of a country under wartime siege but it seems life goes on as normal for the most part, at least away from the areas of fighting.

Coragem grande povo ucraniano pois a VITORIA é certa.

  6. Leviung Kyiv, you showed a diesel loco. Did you travel on diesel through Ukraine? Is that due to Russian attacks to Ukraine's electrical infrastructure? I take it you got eletric loco once in in Poland?
Trivia: "Russia gauge" was set by an American engineer who convince tzar to go with 5 US feet. Tris translated to 1524mm. Finland remains at 1524, but Russia eventually decided to standardize on 1520 to make it simpler. The different still allows Fiish and Russian trains to travel on each other,s tracks ( at least till Russian invasion ion 2022).

  7. Now wouldn't it be great if in time Nox became rich enough to get the stock and the infrastructure needed to change gauge on the move, like in Spain!
Best wishes for the success of your project 😊

  8. Цікаво, з якими почуттями це відео дивляться українські чоловіки, а також скільки українських чоловіків було в поїзді. Може один француз і був.

  9. Well… your "production" is nothing special – lack of gauge changeing, shunting in Dorohusk etc. instead we get TOILET TIME. Who the f cares about toilets in that type of train??

  10. This train is very hard to buy tickets for, but interestingly enough in my opinion it is THE worst way to get to Warsaw by rail. It is way better to take big and comfy Ukrainian sleeper coaches to Chelm and have a cross-platform change there to a Polish IC train with AC and whatnot. There are three departures like this every day, one of them just has these UIC sleepers attached.

Also, this way you are allowed to use toilets during border crossing as soon as the guards have checked your passport.

  11. 2:17 Well, technically "soviet" loading gauge railcars can go all the way to Warsaw East (Wschodnia) without any problems. There even were an agreement to run train from Kyiv to Warsaw East with "large" cars in 2023, and there were test runs, but in never actually started service.

  12. since a couple months there is daily train Trnascarpathion between Budapest and Kiev with 8 UZ sleeping carriages, departing at 22:40 from Budapest. I tried it last week on Wednesday and it was full. The carriages fit the ukrainian standards therefore can reach only till Budapest, not further.
