One of the most powerful Mediterranean storms in recent years has hit southeastern France. Torrential rain caused widespread flooding, disrupted transportation, caused power outages, and forced the postponement of sporting events. Orange warnings for rain, flooding, and thunderstorms were issued in Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, Isère, Vaucluse, Var, Marseille, Toulon, and numerous other cities in southern France. Météo-France recorded up to 127 mm of rain in Avignon, including 108 mm in three hours; 92 mm in Aix-en-Provence, much of it in less than an hour; and almost 113 mm in an hour in Toulon, where the rain intensified in the late afternoon. In Bouches-du-Rhône, 100 mm fell in Salon-de-Provence, 80 mm in Marseille, and 65 mm in Cassis. In total, firefighters in the Bouches-du-Rhône region responded to 1,000 incidents “for reconnaissance, assistance, and water pumping.” The largest number of calls were in Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Châteaurenard, Salon-de-Provence, Istres, Miram, Vitrolles, Rognac, Martigues, and Aix-en-Provence. By midday, approximately 10,000 homes were temporarily without power in Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône. In Var, the figure was significantly higher, with up to 50,000 homes without power at the height of the storm. Firefighters carried out 165 rescue operations in the department, “primarily for safety, including two rescues in Tourves for people trapped in their cars.” These heavy rains negatively impacted sporting events planned in the region. Despite the orange alert level, the Top 14 match between Toulonnais Rugby Club and Stade Rochelles was not postponed. However, a storm that struck the Stade Mayol just before kickoff, causing partial flooding of the pitch and stands, forced the referee to change his decision at the last minute. Several hours earlier, the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture decided to postpone the Ligue 1 match between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain. Although the storm in Marseille eased by the evening, the area around the stadium was completely flooded. The French Observatory of Tornadoes and Severe Thunderstorms reported that more than 75,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the past 24 hours.
