week Athens will be the city you fly into when visiting Greece and before jetting off to one of its islands make sure to give yourself at least three days in Athens the capital city of Greece has a blend of ancient archaeological sites fitting in harmony with the everyday lives of the people few cities on earth can compete with the wonder of Athens if there’s one thing to see in Athens it’s the ancient Acropolis towering over this beautiful city the Acropolis is considered one of the greatest archaeological wonders in the world it’s the historical center of Athens and is one of the most famous sites on earth make sure to set aside at least two hours to see everything at the Acropolis it truly is the star of Athens on your way down there are plenty of sites to see including panoramic views of Athens and the theaters of Dionysus and Odeon of Herodes Atticus there are plenty more things to do in Athens and we have an entire video dedicated to it so if you want to explore more of the city make sure you click on the links below of all the places to visit in Greece Santorini is certainly the most famous if you are looking for a romantic getaway or honeymoon destination this is the best Santorini can be very busy especially when the cruise ships are in so we recommend staying on the island we spent a week in Santorini allowing us the chance to explore the island after all the cruise ships left with its white washed villages and blue domes sitting on high sea cliffs Santorini is postcard perfect Santorini has it all with historical places beaches sunset cruises and pure luxury we stayed in 3 different areas including Perissa Beach Emeraude Village and IA our favorite was at Andronis Luxury Suites with its amazing infinity pool if you can try to stay in a cave hotel when visiting Santorini you can get to Santorini from Athens by flying or taking a ferry we flew as it was only two and a half hours so we could optimise our time on the island from Santorini we hopped on the high speed ferry to Crete Crete is the largest island in Greece offering a wide range of vacation ideas with high peaks and deep gorges to explore pristine beaches and romantic urban scenes Crete is one of the best places to visit in Greece if there’s one thing that makes Crete stand out it’s its archaeological sites the most important one is the Minoan Palace of Nosos Nosos is located just 10 minutes away from the capital of the island Heraklion a drive along the plateau will take you through small forgotten mountain villages stone windmills and one of Crete’s most impressive caves the cave of Zeus and be sure to see Elafonisi beach which is often considered the best beach in Greece this is Parga for that classic Greek island vacation make your way to Parga Parga is a town that rivals the likes of Greece’s Santorini or Crete but in truth Parga reminded us of the towns of Cinque Terre in Italy besides its beaches and water sports the main attraction of Parga is Parga Castle where you can hike up for a beautiful views of the colorful buildings lining the beach Parga is located on the mainland but it certainly feels like a Greek island so even if you don’t make it to nearby Corfu you will get your fill of that Greek beach vacation there’s a lovely waterfront with restaurants plenty of shops and a good secluded beach that is perfect for swimming and sunbathing exploring the magical and mystical Meteora Meteora is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Greece that is gaining in popularity located in central Greece about four hours from Athens this awe inspiring place is a sea of 9th century monasteries built atop massive rock monoliths the monasteries of Meteora are so impressive that Meteora is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site monks built monasteries at the top of these mountains as a hidden retreat where they lived in seclusion and safety while scaling the walls with ropes and ladders so before 1922 the way that you got up here was they put you in a small little net and two monks would stay up here and push that wheel around and as the rope got shorter and shorter that’s how you get up quite an adventure these sandstone spires reach 400 meters into the sky they were formed 60 million years ago and the landscape of Meteora is one of the most unique and beautiful we’ve ever seen now that is a view located in the southwest corner of the Peloponnese region on mainland Greece Messenia rivals the best of the islands this region is located on the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea and very few tourists visit this amazing place in Greece while everyone has heard of the Acropolis and the temple of Poseidon Messini is a well preserved ancient city of Greece that you may not have heard of we had the chance to visit it completely free from crowds Mathoni Castle is another star attraction in this region that dates back to the 4th century BC it’s been ruled by the Turks Venetians and the Greeks make sure to walk out to the small island of bortse to see the stone octagonal fortress shaped like the Greek letter Omega Voida Kilia Beach is a place of legends Homer referenced this beach in the Odyssey and it was believed to be used by King Nestor and the ancient King Pylos it’s one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen a great place to stay in the Messenia region is at the Western Costa Navarino resort it was designed to promote the region of Messenia while protecting and preserving both the nature and culture of the area and a leading example of sustainability in the Mediterranean and there it is the temple of Poseidon this is so exciting we’re heading up to see it it’s early in the morning and hopefully there’s no people around The Temple of Poseidon is one hour and 30 minutes from Athens on Cape Sounion on the Athens Riviera the Riviera stretches from Piraeus to Sounion standing 60 meters above sea level it is the perfect location for a temple honoring Poseidon the Greek god of the sea The Temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444 to four forty BC and is 70 kilometers outside of the city we visited while spending a few days out at Vinci ever Eden to enjoy some beach life out on the Athens Riviera another one of the best places to visit in Greece is Zagori known for its stone bridges and outdoor adventures it’s located in the north western region of the country these arch bridges that span the Voithomitos River have become a symbol of Epirus we visited several bridges including the famous Kokori Bridge which is the most popular as it’s located right by the side of the road and has become the symbol of Epirus but there are several stone bridges throughout the region and we found Trixoto to be the most impressive the bridges were built to connect the 46 villages of Zagori during the 17th and 18th centuries and today visitors can hike along the paths and cross the high bridges well in Zagori you must stop at the Vikos Gorge this gorge is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the deepest gorge in the world in proportion to its width it is spectacular and there are some beautiful pull offs and viewpoints you can book multi day treks and go White Water rafting we’re about to go on a boat tour to the island with no name we’re going to see a monastery I’m looking forward to the beautiful scenery ionana is a city in northern Greece that is a 90 minute flight from Athens and the number one attraction is the monasteries of Lake Panovotida we caught a 10 minute ferry ride out to the Byzantine monasteries that date back to the 13th century we have arrived at the island and yes it is just called the island this is one of three places in Greece where you can see the famous monasteries the other ones are in Meteora and Thessaloniki so this is a pretty special place to visit up here this is really neat you know there’s not a lot of people here and I feel like in a few years this will be the place to come when you’re in Greece quite a few monasteries here actually this has the second largest concentration of monasteries in Greece which is pretty cool and you can walk around the island really dig into the history of this part of Greece another impressive place to visit in Greece is the Kapina Monastery this monastery is similar to the likes of Meteora and is not too far from Iona located just outside the village of kararithes in Tsumerka this 13th century monastery can be reached by walking a steep path to its entrance and then crossing a small wooden bridge dangling over the abyss the monastery is free to enter and inside you’ll see religious paintings and altars monks quarters and the cave Sumerka not only houses one of the most extraordinary monasteries in Greece it also boasts the largest stone arch bridge in all of the Balkans this is one single arch that is absolutely breathtaking while there are endless Greek islands that you can visit including Corfu and Mykonos just to name a couple we are going to leave you with the island of zakinthos perhaps the most famous beach of the Greek islands is Navagio Beach also known as Shipwreck Beach it is surrounded by high white sea cliffs surrounding its turquoise waters located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece it is a 50 minute flight from Athens Zakynthos is also known for its loggerhead sea turtles beautiful beaches and sea caves but the same can be said for many Greek islands so don’t limit yourself to the islands listed on this video get out there and explore more and there you have it the best places to visit in Greece that we’ve been
