Japan travel / Machida Walk to the Sakai River Source via Mountain Trails , Tokyo / 4K UHD
Climb the highest mountain in Machida City Current location: Machida City, Tokyo The current location is about 1.5 km from Hosei University. We parked our rental bicycles in the Nature Factory Tokyo Machida parking lot and started our journey. Your subscription is the beginning of a journey. Let’s go to a new view. This seems to be Nature Factory Tokyo Machida. In 2023, a bear was spotted on the property. This mountain is connected to Mount Takao, but it seems that there are about 160 bears living within Tokyo. Apparently, this facility closed when the bear appeared. This time, we will head to the source of the Sakai River, which is located nearby. The Sakai River forms the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures, and its mouth is around Enoshima, so many people have probably seen it. It’s a campsite, but there’s no one there because it’s damp after the rain. This is the Sakai River. As expected, the upper reaches are very clear. It’s still on the facility grounds, but I wonder if a bear has appeared around here. In areas where bears have been spotted, signs warning of bear sightings are usually put up, but they probably aren’t put up because it would interfere with business. They seemed to be maintenance workers, and they were building a bonfire with incredible intensity, making my whole body smell like smoke. Apparently the smell of a bonfire repels bears, and carrying mosquito coils is also effective. It seems bear bells and radios are useless. A sign at the entrance to the source of the Sakai River. I was fooled by this sign and ended up going left. This time I’ll get my revenge. I’ll turn right. The sign is in a weird position. It is a valley, a landform likely created by the Sakai River eroding it over many years. This is it. There is a sign for the source of the Sakai River. Water springs from the mountain slopes. The Sakai River is 52.1 km long to its mouth at Enoshima. If the flow rate is 1 m/s, it will take about 15 hours to reach the sea. I guess it’s not just here, the spring water comes from many different places. Since we’ve come this far, let’s continue on to the summit of Kusadoyama. It’s cloudy now. What a shame. This is the summit. Mt. Kusado is the highest peak in Machida City. It is 364m above sea level. It is about half the height of Mt. Takao. It seems like you can go towards Mount Takao or Tsukui from here. There’s a person equipped with a bear bell and a dog. I guess this dog will use the Zetsuro Battouga technique to kill bears. It’s cloudy and visibility is poor. Now, let’s go down the mountain. The valley is deep. It must have been carved out by the Sakai River. Autumn has finally arrived. The leaves are starting to change color. The Kobotoke Formation is the oldest geological layer found in Machida City and is said to be deep-sea deposits from about 100 million years ago. The color is starting to come from the tip. I wonder if it will be dyed in about a week? That’s all for today. Thank you for watching. Your subscriptions will help me on my next journey. I walk along a road surrounded by mountain slopes on the outskirts of Machida City. Despite being on the edge of Tokyo, this place is home to quiet forests and springs. It’s near Hosei University. As I dismount and enter the mountain path, the air slowly changes. The smell of damp earth and the distant chirping of birds fill the air. With each steep incline, I approach the source of the Sakai River. A pure stream flows through the mountain valley, separating Tokyo and Kanagawa over time. Its beginning, leading to the sea at Enoshima, is a faint stream of water gushing out from a crevice in the rocks. Standing there, just imagining the flow of the stream, I feel as if the world has expanded a little. Climbing further, I reach the summit of Machida City’s highest peak, Mt. Kusado. At 364 meters above sea level, the autumn leaves are just beginning to change color under cloudy skies. A river carving out the valley and a mountain built on layers of rock 100 million years old. In this silence, the memories of human life and nature live on.
