Périgueux vs Sarlat: Which Dordogne Town Is Actually Better?

In this episode, we explored two of the most talked-about towns in the Dordogne region of France: Périgueux and Sarlat.

Périgueux surprised us more than we expected. The Saint-Front Cathedral is massive in person, and the city feels quieter, more local, and very livable. Sarlat has a completely different energy. Its medieval streets and stone buildings feel almost untouched by time, which explains why it’s one of the most visited towns in the Dordogne.

In this video, we share our experiences visiting Périgueux and Sarlat and compare what each place is really like once you’re there. We talk about what stood out to us, what felt practical versus romantic, and how each town fits into real life in France, especially as people navigate buying property in the Dordogne.

If you’re researching the Dordogne, planning a trip to France outside Paris, or curious about what medieval towns in France are actually like beyond the highlight reels, this video should give you a grounded, honest perspective.

  1. As a French who, let's say spent some time in the USA in the past, I love watching your videos of you two in our country. Also I have to say that your will to speak French and pronounce it the "right" way is adorable, you're doing good. Wish you guys the best. 🙂 From Paris

  2. Hi guys! Love your videos! My husband and I would love to move to France with our four dogs. Maybe one day! It is absolutely one of my favorite countries! How did you learn to speak French so well!

  3. Europe needs the Mercosur trade deal. We are locked out of LATAM pharmaceutical and automobile markets and LATAM has a lot of natural resources to offer. And the crops French farmers produce aren't the same LATAM farmers do: coffee, cocoa, bananas, soy beans, corn, etc. It's particularly important for cultural reasons for Spain and Portugal and it is expected to boost the European economy. It's still years ahead to come into force.

  4. Gorgeous couple! Sarlat is more intimate and more medieval and offers a better jumping off point to explore the Dordogne. I rented an AirBnB on the rue de Turenne. Sarlat at night is very different once all the tourists have left. Try to visit Brantôme if you have time. Périgord is one of my favorite regions. Only the A89 cuts through it, but otherwise its full of quiet country roads with amazing views and quaint villages. The architecture is also unique with the beautiful ochre stones and slanting red tile roofs.
