Africa’s First Mega-Hub: Ethiopian Airlines’ $12.5 Billion Airport To Open In 2030

Ethiopian Airlines has announced that the construction of its new $12.5 billion airport project has begun. The new facility is set to become the largest airport on the African continent and its first mega-hub, with the capacity to handle over 100 million passengers annually.

With the airline’s current hub set to reach maximum capacity in the coming years, this new airport project will be funded by the airline, along with a few domestic and international credit lenders. The first phase of the airport should be operational sometime in 2030.

  1. Has nobody noticed where they are building the airport? They are building it on top of bishaftou, Ethiopia. The same place where ET 302 crashed on March 10, 2019.

  2. I'm personally impressed and very proud of Ethiopian Airline and hope that our very own SAA and ACSA are watching and learning. Not so long ago this country was in dire straits and the world was contributing to it and a sound of hope was created for them. "We are the World" Rest in peace Michael Jackson, your efforts and all those involved were not in vain

  3. When I was a child growing up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I was fascinated by planes. I read about the masterplan of KL International Airport to one day accommodate 100 million passengers. I scoffed at such a large number, as in the early 2000s the airport had only 15-25 million passengers annually. That airport accommodated 57 million passengers in 2024. Malaysia is preparing to continue expanding KLIA.

I went to Istanbul in May 2019 when the gargantuan new airport had just opened up. I read about the plan to eventually allow for 200 million passengers a year with 8 parallel runways. I was taken aback, but less so, as Turkish Airlines is positioning itself as a global hub. It had 80 million passengers in 2024. It is likely to reach 200 million in a few decades, as planned for.

Now with the news of Dubai building a brand new DWC airport for 260 million passengers a year, because their existing DXB is reaching capacity at 90+ million passengers a year, and the Addis Ababa mega hub in Ethiopia for 100 million passengers a year, it hits home how rapidly aviation has grown in only 20 short years.

Well done to Ethiopia. Africa is the final untapped aviation market, and it is positioning itself to reap the dividend of the great growth ahead.

  4. I can see they took some cues from LAX. The two level horseshoe layout, the main terminal being at the end just like Tom Bradley International, the parking structures in the middle, the two runways on each side, and even the placement of the two satellite terminals remind me a lot of LAX. It looks great!!!

  5. Funny how Angola has opened recently a brand new international airport in Luanda, the biggest one build in Africa during this century and still no coverage, but Ethiopia presents this project and in the same week it gets a video uploaded about it. Am I missing something here ?

  6. Having Traveled through the old airport I know the need of a upgrade is critical. Both times we connected there, we knew we were in a Third World country even though we were in First Class. I hope they can pull this off as overall Ethiopian Airlines was very good. It was just the terminal that was WAY BELOW par.
