FRANKFURT – Full City Tour of Frankfurt, Germany
FRANKFURT – Full City Tour of Frankfurt, Germany
Come with me as we explore the streets of the city of Frankfurt and the Old Town, checking out the shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and lots more. Let’s explore beautiful Frankfurt together!
Exploring Frankfurt city centre offers a striking contrast between its identity as a global financial powerhouse and its meticulously restored historical roots. As you step out of the high-end boutiques on the Zeil or the shadow of the glass-and-steel skyscrapers known as Mainhattan, you quickly find yourself in the heart of the Altstadt. The focal point is the Römerberg, a picturesque square featuring the iconic Römer city hall and colorful half-timbered houses that feel like a scene from a traditional German folk tale. This area, largely rebuilt after the second world war, serves as the city’s cultural anchor where you can witness the juxtaposition of medieval aesthetics against one of Europe’s most modern skylines.
A short walk from the historic center leads to the banks of the Main River, where the atmosphere shifts to one of leisure and greenery. Crossing the Eiserner Steg, a 19th-century iron footbridge adorned with countless love locks, provides one of the best panoramic views of the city. On the southern bank lies the Museumsufer, an impressive collection of world-class institutions ranging from the Städel Museum’s fine arts to the German Film Museum. This riverside promenade is a favorite for tourists and locals alike, offering a peaceful space to stroll or enjoy a coffee while watching the river traffic pass by.
To truly experience the local flavor of the city centre, a visit to the Kleinmarkthalle is essential. This bustling indoor market is a sensory delight where you can sample regional specialties like Frankfurter green sauce, handkäs mit musik, or a traditional smoked sausage from a legendary stall. After working up an appetite, many visitors head across the river to the narrow alleys of Sachsenhausen to sit in a rustic tavern and drink apfelwein, the tart local cider served in ribbed glasses. This blend of international business, deep-seated history, and cozy culinary traditions makes exploring the city centre a multifaceted journey.
