The two-bedroom, two-bath house at 1284 Stanyan St. sits on two parcels totaling about 9,600 square feet at the edge of Mount Sutro Forest.
The Newsom connection goes back to 1967, when the governor’s father, William Alfred “Bill” Newsom III, was running for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
In his candidate statement for the Nov. 7 election, Bill Newsom listed the address as his residence and said he was married to Tessa Menzies, who had inherited the property from her father, Arthur Menzies.
Gavin Newsom was born in San Francisco just before that election, on Oct. 10, 1967.
While public records establish that Newsom’s parents lived at the Stanyan Street address around the time of his birth, it is not clear how long the city’s future mayor lived there as an infant.
Menzies sold the property sometime in the 1970s, and in his memoir released this year, “Young Man in a Hurry,” Newsom recalled spending his early childhood at an apartment on Octavia Street, where his mom kept a pet otter.
The Stanyan house dates to 1951 and was reclad in clear-heart redwood from Marin County in 1979, according to the new listing. The kitchen and two bathrooms have since been renovated.
The home is set back from Stanyan Street and surrounded by trees. It has a top-floor deck, garden patios and views through the surrounding vegetation. The two adjoining lots also give the property room for possible expansion, subject to city approvals.
Listing agent John DiDomenico said the property’s main appeal is the unusual combination of privacy and location.

The property was previously listed for $3.6 million in 2019 and sold that year for $2.8 million, according to property records.
