Tirana, its compact capital is the perfect starting point for exploring the captivating and equally compact country of Albania.
Although compact, both captial and country possess limitless possibilies.
While Tirana is crammed wth Mouments and Cutural Sites, Sights to tempt the camera, Galleries, Theatres featuring Opea and Ballet, Hotels to suit all tastes and pockets and Restaurants and Bars to quell the hunger and slake the thirst the country of which it is capital is chock full of breathtaking sights like the Albanian Alps, deep canyons, precipitous ravines and National Parks which the visitor can easily access.
The forest trails and moutnain tracks make it a hiker’s paradise.
Top of the must see sights in Tirana is The Bunk’Art Museum. During Communism Rule there were 173, 371 concrete bunkers scattered through the country. The Museum in question is located inside the atomic bunker of the dictator Enver Hoxha. It features exhibitions that combine the modern history of the nation with contemporary art.
Skandebeg Square is the main square of the city and is named for the national hero of the country who lived in medieval times, Gjergi Skanderbeg. Its Neo-Renaissance style also plays host to farmer’s markets which showcase their local products.
The Mother Teresa Square, named for possbily the most globally famous Albanian, is also well worth a visit, as it features the University of Tirana, the National Arhaeological Museum and the Centre of Albanological Studies.
The Clock Tower of Tirana is the emblem of the city and dates from the 19th Century. It is 35 metres tall and was the tallest building of the city when it was built. Access to the top of the tower is available, via the 90 steps of the spiral staircase.
The Blloku is widely known as an entertainement and shopping destination with its many boutiques, shops, restaurants, trendy bars, pubs and cafes. It is largely a pedestrianised area, easily accessible from different parts of the city.
Pazari i R forms a part of the Old Town of Tirana and it is in this neighbourhood where the groceries marketplace is situated. The Et’jhem Bey Mosque is located close to the Clock Tower while the hill-top Petree Castle is close to Tirana, affords splendid vistas and dates from Bzyantine times.
Mount Daiti National Park is considered by the people of Tirana as The Natural Balcony of Tirana in winter, when the mountain is often covered with snow and it is a popular retreat for the local population of Tirana. The mountain can be reached through the Dajti Express cable car.The mountain slopes are densely vegetated mostly by sturdy pines and beech trees.
The Land of the Eagles is what Albania is know in Albanian,. The Albanian Alps are the natural habitat of this most imperial of birds. The Western Coast of Albania, of course, is washed by the Adriatic Sea where in the summer, there are countless golden beaches to be enjoyed. Inland, the visitor is spoilt for choice: from enjoying the forts, ruins, and castles to rafting, hiking, looking out for flamingoes, cherry trees, vineyards, bears, persimmon trees, deer, ibex and meeting the friendly locals as you explore the narrow lanes of medieval villages.
