Hope you all like this video. This video is about Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary located in the Chengalpattu district and Madurantakam Taluk of the state of Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary is about 75 km from Chennai on National Highway 45, about 15 km off the National Highway between Chennai and Trichy. You need to take a de-tour before Madhurandhakam when you travel from Chennai. The sanctuary is located behind the madhurandham lake and is surrounded by many of villages and farm land.
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is the oldest bird sanctuary in India. This was a hunting ground once upon a time before many centuries.
The word vedanthangal in Tamil means – Hunter’s hamlet.
The local people around this sanctuary have been protecting this place for centuries because they have realised that the bird droppings falling into the water creates a guano effect, it is rich in nitrogen and phospherous. This water when used for irrigation, helps increase yields and reduces the usage of fertilizers.
This lake was declared as Vedanthangal Birds Sancturary in 1972.
Due to this protection given to this place, more than 40,000 birds visit this place every year during season, though this is only a 30 hectare small park.
The entrance tickets for the park are available outside the park.

Bird Sanctuaries are natural facilities that serve the conservation of various species and also their natural habitat. Further, it promotes the survival and rehabilitation of these birds.
Variety of birds from different parts of the world visit the sanctuary during the migratory season every year. This sanctuary is completely dependent on rainfall and faces water problems during the summer season,
Birds to Vedanthanagal comes majorly from Siberia due to cold climatic conditions there and they quickly breed here.
Vedanthangal sanctuary has a lake with lots of trees in water. Barringtonia trees, Acacia niloctica trees are found here, which variety of birds use for nesting purposes.
Best season to visit vedanthangal sanctuary is from the month of November till march. Because this is the season for migratory birds.
Try to reach there early at 6 to 7 PM as well, so that you can have a wonderful time in the morning.
The sanctuary is open from 6 AM to 6 PM.
Some of the birds that capture the attention of the visitors are pelicans, kingfisher, egrets, storks, white ibis, flamingos, herons, spoonbills, swans, open billed storks, moorhens, painted storks, sandpipers and grey wagtails.
Most common of these birds are the painted storks, which you are seeing now.
It is called as manjal mooku narai in Tamil
This is a large bird that wades in water and the adult birds have pink feathers at their back. Due to which they have got this name. the beaks are yellow in color and hence the tamil name.
It is found in the wet lands of tropical plain from the Indian subcontinent extending upto the south east Asia.
They nest in trees, often with other water birds.
They feed in flocks in shallow waters along rivers or lakes.
They immerse their half open beaks inside water and sweep them from side to side. They sense their prey, which are small fishes by sense of touch. As they wade along the water, they also stir the water with their feet to flush hiding fishes in the water. The nesting seasons of these birds commences in late October and the birds are through the breeding and disperse to their feeding grounds about February.
From the watch tower you get a wider view of the sanctuary (Entry Ticket – Rs.20). This gives a complete view of the sanctuary. They have 4 binocular over there to have closer view of the birds and their activities. They have also provided a binocular at a less height so that kids can themselves look into it and have a good view. You can have a closer view of birds nesting, feeding, eating, swimming, diving, resting, homemaking and squawking.
Those who are passionate about bird watching, can spend long hours just watching the birds over here. You can take rest by relaxing on the granite benches that have been provided along the way.
