Every year in Otaru, Hokkaido, usually the first weekend of the month, there snow lantern festival. About 30 min from Sapporo, this is a popular attraction, since it occurs about the same time as the Sapporo snow festival. However Otaru is much more quaint and chill than downtown Sapporo. The snow creations may be smaller, but the whole town is lit up and has a amazing vibe.
