Torres del Paine National Park is a park encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine is the park’s centerpiece. The area lies in a transition zone between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes.
It is located 112 kilometers (70 miles) north of Puerto Natales and 312 kilometers (194 miles) north of Punta Arenas. In Argentine territory, the park borders Bernardo O’Higgins National Park to the west and Los Glaciares National Park to the north. Paine means “blue” in the native Tehuelche (Aonikenk) language, while Torres means “towers”. It was established as a National Park in 1959.
