Santillana del Mar is a municipality and a villa in the autonomous community of Cantabria (Spain). It is situated on Cantabria’s western coast, in the region that serves as its easternmost outpost. Since it doesn’t have a sea, even if its municipality does, the villa is commonly known by the nickname “the villa of the three lies” (although it does have a sea).
The villa was designated a combined historic-artistic resource in 1889.
Immediately nearby is the Altamira cave, which is protected as a piece of human heritage.
It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cantabria and is a must-stop for anyone passing through the area.
