In this video I travelled from Bacolod to Silay City, Negros Island. Silay City is often referred to as the “Paris of Negros” or the “cultural and intellectual hub of Negros” due to the residents’ love for knowledge and works of art, and its collection of heritage mansions built during the height of the Philippine sugar industry’s success, of which Negros was the very center.
Most notable among the heritage houses is Balay Negrense, the ancestral house of Victor F. Gaston, the son of Yves Leopold Germain Gaston, credited as one of the pioneers of sugarcane cultivation in this portion of the Philippine archipelago. Gaston, a native of Normandy in France, he married a Filipina from Batangas where he initially began experimenting with sugar production before relocating to Negros.
Another house on the Silay heritage trail is Hofileña Ancestral House which was built by Manuel Severino Hofileña for his wife, former Miss Silay Gilda Ledesma Hojilla and their nine children.
The Hofileña Ancestral House, was built in 1934.
