THE BIRTHPLACE OF CÄSAR RITZ

César Ritz was a Swiss hotelier and entrepreneur, born February 23, 1850 in Niederwald in Upper Valais and died October 26, 1918 in Küssnacht (canton of Schwyz). He was the first to develop the luxury hotel market. He left his mark on the history of the hotel industry, so much so that in English the word “ritzy” is an adjective that designates the ultimate in elegance.

Niederwald is a locality and a former Swiss municipality in the canton of Valais, located in the district of Goms.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality merged with the municipalities of Blitzingen, Grafschaft, Münster-Geschinen and Reckingen-Gluringen to form the municipality of Goms.

Personalities :

The Ritz family is linked to Niederwald. It provided several renowned artists in the 19th century, such as the sculptor Anton Ritz (1800-1853), the painter Franz Ritz (1788-1859), the church painter and portraitist Lorenz Justin Ritz (1796-1860) born in this village in the building called “Schloss”, and the son of the latter, Raphael Ritz (1829-1894) who was one of the main Swiss painters of his time3.

César Ritz (1850-1918), the founder of the famous “Ritz” hotels, was also born in Niederwald4. He died in Paris in 1918. His ashes were repatriated in 1961, on the death of his wife Marie-Louise, née Beck. Their common grave is in the village cemetery.

Historians describe Niederwald as one of the most intact and characteristic places in the Goms. The mountain village owes its origins to the old bridge over the Rhone, the first mention of which dates back to 1250. This is where the old mule tracks coming from Ernen changed banks in the valley. Hotel king Caesar Ritz was born here in 1850. His monument, tomb and birthplace can still be visited today. Besides hospitality, art was also present under the roofs of Niederwald with the painter Lorenz Justin Ritz (1796-1870). After a major renovation, the Niederwald station building became the Ritz station. The new facilities include a bistro, a shop selling regional products, as well as the permanent exhibition on César Ritz and the temporary exhibition featuring images by painter and sculptor Willi Dreesen.
