πŸ₯’ ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.

If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I’m a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

  1. HELLO SONNY I THINK WHAT HURTS IS WHEN HE PULLED THE TURTLE ON THE BOAT AND HE HAD THAT OBJECT IN HIS SHELL AND HE WAS GASPING FOR AIR THAT WAS THE HARD PART😒😒😒 MY NEICE HAD A TURTLE AND SHE WASN'T TAKING CARE OF HIM PROPERLY, I SAVED HIM MANY TIMES πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ I NAMED HIM TURTLEDOVEπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ OTHERWISE NICE VIDEO SONNY πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  2. I really can’t understand why aboriginals who eat beef and chicken have to hunt venerable species! They get all their other food from shops. Is it a lack of money? That’s possible because most aboriginal people don’t work and bludge off the government. Anyone outside of Australia Google Alice Springs crime, Townsville crime or Darwin Crime before you share your opinion.

  3. Always hard to watch when critters gotta get murked…..but definitely something not seen on other food shows travel shows culture shows. This one was gnarly

  4. it's sn eye opener. mix feeling, I sad specially to his 2 animals are so lovable like the Kuala or panda. I grow having mind set to protecting them, but now your show open my mind on its cultural aspect which I need to respect. to their culture. but I still can't help it, I still feel sad though. so sorry

  5. When people can eat endangered turtles and no one complains because it happened in Australia as it is considered part of western countries, but everyone complains even to become a little bit aggressive when people in some South East Asia countries still eat dog meat which is would never be considered as endangered animal…

  6. Curious why more people are forgiving in turtle eating compared to dogs πŸ€” more specifically, why when Asian cultures eat this and other animals, it’s more β€œomg I can never. So cruel etc etc” type comments. Here it’s β€œ oh thank you! For enlightening us and content” πŸ˜‚

  7. So stab the turtle but don’t kill it just in case you want to let it go? So throw it back with a big hole in its shell?

  8. I think what you showed in this video is disgusting. I don't care that they used to eat it a long time ago, now they can't do it anymore

  9. As an Australian that lives and works regionally, over 400kms from the sea, thanks Sonny!
I grew up on the coast but even Aussies don't know or understand the indigenous heritage.
    Great episode mate!

  10. I respect tradition but not to the extent to continue a tradition by endangering things not limited to only animals but in general. If the tradition can have bad effects or outcome to your environment or future, it could simply mean it is not a good tradition. It will not kill you to stop it.
"They keep huting because they've been eating it for thousands of years mean it is good for them"
What kind of logic is that speaking thousand of years when you only live an average lifespan of 60 years. They are simply justifying that their anscertors wete eating it so they should also. I might also justify that my great great granpa were probably killing and eating humans at warring times for food source so i might just be a cannibal during war. Crazy Logic!

  11. Nah I cant. Not this one. Cultural reasons dont excuse it as times have changed drastically. Ill give it credit that its not as callous something like pangolins being killed for traditional medicines or shark fine soup but in a time when everything else is availabile its selfishness. There are cultural practices that have been put aside because of their barbarism. This needs to be one of them.

  12. I could never eat because i love sea turtles and sea mammals. Some things are sacred to me. However i appreciate the cultural aspects of the aboriginal traditions being brought to light. These species certainly are not endangered because of the aboriginal peoples. Local peoples seem to usually have natural wisdom when is comes to sustainability. Its always the white folks who haves a history of over exploiting things…then when a species is threatened or endangered, conservation adjustments are finally made lol. I have tried a lot of weird meats but turtle would make me too sad. I respect local cultures and traditions. Great video. Very educational

  13. This video and the one about whale hunting in norway are just amazing, giving such a unique view on these topics that are treated so unfairly in media in general. The importance of culture should not be neglected. Thank you BEFR, you are doing such amazing and important work.

  14. Wait… Y do those Australian people looks like IndiansπŸ˜…πŸ˜… that fat man looks like my uncleπŸ’€πŸ˜…

  15. I can understand the need to keep the culture alive but hunting with boats with motors and guns etc breaks the spirit of hunting to keep the tradition and culture alive. They should be required to hunt in traditional manners.

  16. Sonny and the BEFRS team: Thank you for doing this. I wish I had found y'all years ago but love that I have so much to catch up on. This is so much more than just food of the world. It is the people of the world and how we all use food as a way to identify ourselves. Great show and episode. It was hard to watch but I respect it and respect the Aboriginal culture (I hope that is a word we can use, my apologies if not, I do not know) and am so happy that they are able to continue and share this wonderful culture and amazing place.

  17. Very educational yet i'm tearing up. I love sea turtles & i have a collection of turtle plushies, keychains, drawings and etc. But this, this hits different 😞 My heart hurts watching this.

  18. I find it strange that only specific animals get special feels about eating them. For example, why do lobsters get "dispatched" but not crab, shrimp, crawfish. Make it make sense!

  19. Well done for showing this Sonny! I say this as a vegan, they are doing the right thing. They made the point to say, they know how much to hunt the animal – they make sure not to overhunt. They're doing it in a truly sustainable way. I wish the same could be said for the current meat industry of the west. Factory farming is murder in the cruelest form for everything involved, not just the animals, the enviornment and the people who prep and consume this. Thanks again for the video Sonny, I really liked the way you explained your own bias towards the turtle vs a goat/camel/cow etc. EDIT: thanks for touching on the devastating effect colonization took on that beautiful land and people, yet they continue to remain in high hopes. Really loved this thanks for speaking your truth Karziem and Clinton! it's very inspiring. Your way would stop alot of these issues we have in the world today.

  20. Thank you Sonny for your honest opinion on the experience. I love turtles aswell and it is though provoking to see such a beautiful animal being harvested ethically by people that respect it as well. As the age old saying goes it is the law of the wild.

  21. I have far fewer problems with these indigenous Australians killing, and eating a few sea turtles than I do watching wealthy Americans big game hunting in South Africa. Indeed, anyone who eats meat, and condones the killing of any animal shouldn't be in the slightest shocked or upset.

  22. I love Sonny and his respect towards other cultures. I understand culture and different ways of life but this was hard to watch because I know for a fact that there are so many other aquatic species that can be eaten over a sea turtle. They are not the only thing in the ocean that will feed the one’s hunting family.

  23. With all the abundance of seafood, and many species normal Australians can't hunt or eat, this is absolutely abhorrent! Sea turtles should be on a total ban list! Ots literally just crap! Just because someone used to eat their babies back in the days, doesn't mean the tradition should continue in our modern world!

  24. Agree with you man. I love to hunt and watching hunting videos. I've watched many hunt videos from different animal but turtle hunt hit me hard. It sad man. It's eyes tell unspeakable stories πŸ’”πŸ’”πŸ’”

  25. Traditions change. And with time it should. There is no food shortage so the killing of a turtle isn’t justified. There is nothing amazing about this episode because it is sad! How do we even know that the turtle population is monitored which allows a scope for hunting! This is BS.
