BRUMMANA, LEBANON: TOP SUMMER DESTINATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

So, Rita tell me. Where we are? Brummana There are traditional houses here, very high class place. It’s expensive to buy houses and you know, only rich people live here. The houses are traditional. It’s only villas, you don’t find normal houses. Maybe you find, but not a lot. – Architecture here is nice!

– It’s very nice the weather because in summer it’s not so hot as you can see Because it’s a little bit higher in the mountains, yes? – Mhm. We need about 20 minutes to get here from Beirut. – Yes, it’s very close. – You can feel the difference of the climate it’s like more nice.

– Now it’s starting to get cold! A lot of restaurants, a lot of places to hang around. This is one example of this traditional Lebanese houses It’s very nice architecture! Brummana is located in the Lebanese Mountains, 20 km east of Beirut at an altitude of 800 m above sea level.

It is famous for its traditional Lebanese architecture, mild climate, and spectacular landscapes. It is called the city of flowers, which lushly cover charming houses. Considered the main summer resort in the country, it attracts many Lebanese for day and weekend trips. People come here to relax from the heat and noise of the capital.

You will find here many restaurants, hotels and guest houses. The town is also home  to a prestigious private British High School, one of the best in the country. The majority of the city’s inhabitants are Christians, namely Maronite and Greek Orthodox with a small Druze minority. Brummana is also famous for its pine forests and rich nature.

It is considered the green lungs of the region. This is the view from Brummana. Over there you have school (British High School) and a football pitch. And over there we have Beirut. I don’t know if it’s visible but over here Mediterranean Sea starts. And over there is Beirut. Usually when the weather is better,

When there is no storm, you can see from this from this place this beautiful view. Unfortunately, we don’t have a sidewalk here to walk properly, you have to walk on the street. This is one thing I don’t like personally that there’s no place for walking. – Because people simply don’t walk! And here,

There is a private school in Brummana (British High School). We could enter here only because we asked the security man. He told us: “Okay, okay, but only be quick.” We enter because this building caught our attention from outside, it is very nice. And from there I think there’s also a nice view.

Look, this is very old olive tree. Very old. Olive trees are known to be trees that are living for a long time. Very long time, [they can be] even thousand years old! In Lebanon you have these trees which look like a cauliflower a little bit.

We saw them especially in this place where we went [before]: Jezzine Jezzine and Bkassine. They are known for having these pines. But this region also is known. Look, it’s very beautiful. We’ve entered a coffee shop to take a coffee. It’s Unicorn Coffee House. It looks very nice like not in Lebanon.

It’s like in the USA or something like this this furnishing inside. It’s nice. We’ll check how the coffees taste. In this coffee shop we paid 6 dollars for these two coffees, two cappuccinos. The weird thing right now in Lebanon is that because of the current economical crisis and devaluation of the currency,

Right now we have big inflation, everything, when you go to the shops [prices] are in US dollars, and depending on the day they put exchange rate for the day. They consider these prices in Lebanese [Pounds] according to the current value of US dollar. So right now you can pay either in US dollars

Or in Lebanese Pounds. Right now is, I think, 97 000 [Lebanese Pounds for 1 dollar]… – 94 000 – 94 000, but remember, when we came it was 97 000. So, within couple of days value of [Lebanese] currency strengthened a little bit. Imagine, like 4 years ago for 1 dollar you got

1 500 Lebanese Pounds. Right now you have 96 000! – From 1,5 to 96! – Yeah, incredible. So all this place, this Brummana the main street is full of restaurants, coffee shops. So, if you if you go there you have variety of options to eat in good places. The prices are like in Beirut,

People are nice. It’s very nice place to visit for two hours maybe. To eat something good and to walk on this street. Oh, this is an example of a cedar tree over here. The same cedar tree that you can find on the Lebanese flag. This the municipality of Brummana.

Cedar tree which is the most known tree from Lebanon of course. The symbol of Lebanon. In the past it was growing all over Lebanese Mountains. And it was well known for its strength, for its durability and from this cedar wood the Phoenicians were constructing their ships. That’s why they were able to develop

The trade with all Mediterranean countries, like Greece. And they were able to establish their colonies in the Mediterranean. Because of these ships made from this wood. Even this wood was exported to countries like Egypt. In the past there was exchange between Phoenician cities [and Egypt], cedars for example for papyrus. That’s why for example name [of city] ‘Byblos’

It came from a Greek name of papyrus. The city was importer of papyrus from Egypt and they were exchanging it for cedar wood. So this tree is very important in Lebanon. Right now they are [growing] only in some [natural] reserves, because it was cut by invaders by Greeks, by Romans, they were cutting these trees.

Later even in 19th century when Ottomans were occupying this territory they were also cutting these trees to construct for example railway. In Lebanon you can see these markets near the main road selling fruits and so on. when I compare the prices to those in Poland here it’s much more cheaper. I think four times.

For example the prices of tomatoes, of fruits. I think because the climate here is very warm you don’t have to import or to grow in the greenhouses. – Sometimes in winter only. – Sometimes, yes, in winter, and we [in Poland] have to almost all year.

Brummana is one of many towns near Beirut that are worth visiting. In just half an hour we are able to move from the Lebanese capital to the wild mountains completely changing the surroundings. it is unusual in Lebanon that in such a small area of only 10,452 km2 we have such diverse landscapes: bustling cities, azure sea,

Broummana (Arabic: برمانا) is a town in the Matn District of the Mount Lebanon Governorate in Lebanon. It is located east of Beirut, overlooking the capital and the Mediterranean. Broummana has long been a summer destination for visitors and locals. It is also the green lung of the region, with many pine trees lining its streets.

As most of the villages, Broummana has an Aramaic name which most probably means “house of Rammana, the God of Air, Storm and Thunder”. In the location where Broummana was built it was thought that the god Rammanu lived there, which gave the name “House of Rammanu”, and it is known that the letter B at the beginning of the name of villages refers to “beit” in Syriac, meaning “house”.

Broummana is home to a number of religious groups, with Christians, mostly Greek Orthodox making up 40%, Maronite Catholic making up 40% of the population, and Greek Catholic making up 10% of the population, with Druze making a substantial minority of 10%. The town is also the summer home of tourists from the Middle East.

Broummana is one of Lebanon’s main summer resorts due to its relatively cool climate. Sitting on top of a pine-forested hill, the town has views over Beirut, the Mediterranean coast, and the surrounding mountainous area. It attracts Lebanese visitors for day and weekend trips. Broummana also attracts thousands of Arab tourists from the Persian Gulf every summer, eager to escape from the hot and arid climate of the Persian Gulf. The population of Broummana rises to about 60,000 during the summer months, from a low of about 15,000 in winter, when the weather is cold and sometimes snowy.

Broummana has many hotels, including the Grand Hills Hotel, Broummana Hotel, Kanaan Hotel, Le Crillion, Printania Hotel, Jawhara Palace, and Garden Hotel.

It also has a number of restaurants and cafés – as well as a number of pubs and roasteries.

Considered one of the best in the country, Broummana High School was founded here by the Quaker Theophilus Waldmeier in 1873. The school influenced the inhabitants of Broummana and gave the town some English traditions, such as five o’clock tea.
